Kalidor Settlement in Tarien | World Anvil

Kalidor

Named after the Principality's founder, this walled town dates back to was once known as Jobar. Beginning as a stopover for merchants travelling from Galencia to the new docks Grennig, the town grew over the years as a both a farming community that supported the great city and a secondary port of call in the Principality. Tall stone walls, built with misshapen rocks of red and orange, were added by Eldoria, just after the burning of Fort Parna. Colleen Braveheart renamed the town for her father shortly after his death.

Buildings in the town itself are mostly made of brown brick, assembled from the mashed up reeds and mud along the river's eastern shore. Its streets are narrow and winding with a haphazard layout that has sprung up over the years. Since the enclosure of the town, there has been a shortage of real-estate, leading the townsfolk to build upward. The result is that most structures are four and even five stories tall, an unusual sight in such a small town.

While it does not boast the gambling and other entertainments of the capital, Kalidor is secondary hub of trade for the Principality, with some ships coming directly here, instead of to Grennig proper. The diversion of traffic originally began as a way for merchants to avoid the watchful eye of the Grennig Trade Commision, but they quickly caught on, moved in, and set up a robust operation. With the Trade Commision came the Grennig Shore Patrol to both keep the peace and help collect tariffs. As a result, many now see the town as simply a miniature version of the capital.
