Bongo Woods

Filled with widely spaced groves of hickories and chestnuts and interwoven with oaks and littered with cedar that seem to fill every available space where the sun breaks through the canopy, the Bongo Woods can shift suddenly from dark and open floored to a dense, nearly impassable thicket. This habitat, with its hot, humid summers and mild, nearly snowless winters, suits the small deer and antelope that make it their home just fine. They have plenty of space to stretch their legs when no one is around to see them all well staying a short bound or two away from an underbrush into which they can melt. Squirrels, woodpeckers, and possums play in the trees, staying above most of the predators that prowl the forest's understory. Ranging in size from small spotted cats to thick shouldered brown bears and the ever elusive leopard, the forest offers a variety of dangers to its more peaceful residents. Along its edges, however, giants often roam, with great tusked elephants and long necked giraffes foraging on the apple and pear trees that grow at its border with the Galkin Plain. In the past few years the forest has seen some pressure from the farms surrounding Pendril, though their need for wood has been satisfied more from its northern reaches than its southern. Still, old-timers will tell you that the advance of civilization has taken its toll. Years past one was sure to stumble upon the red and white striped creature for whom the forest is named, at least from time to time. It has been at least a decade, however, since one has been seen anywhere but in the most southern reaches of the woods.
