Chaelwyth (χeɪl-vɪθ)

Chaelwyth (pronounced χeɪl-vɪθ) is the only continent to contain two distinct ruling powers, each sovereign from any other governmental body. However, within the context of the U5 (Uthilith Five – the five ruling powers of each major landmass), Chaelwyth is considered a single world power. This is a cause for tension between the two rival governments over their struggle for dominance and control.   Despite this conflict, the two rivalling governments see no need for war over land holdings on the continent. The two Kingdoms evolved in tandem with one another, cultures developing separately due to immense topographical divide.   The Eastern Kingdom of Chaelwyth (often abbreviated as “E.K.”) is what most think of when they consider ‘stereotypical Chaelans”. It’s the wealthier power of the two, it’s more typically represented as the dominant power within the U5, and the dispersion of immigrants to other nations has far exceeded that of the Western Kingdom. The E.K. is a world hub for arts, knowledge, and culture. It holds Severnia, the third largest metropolis in Uthilith (behind only Sakha and Misty Run). Severnia contains a vast network of political bureaucracy, underground trade, and magical undertakings; far more than anyone else on the continent.   However, the Occidental Kingdom of Chaelwyth (often abbreviated as the “O.K.”) is a significantly more centralized, authoritarian power than that of its eastern counterpart. Its largest settlements barely begin to compare to provincial capitals of Tempora or Thur Nirkhum, much less the massive population of Severnia. This half of the continent attempts to be as self-sufficient as possible, heavily limiting international trade between itself and foreign powers. The O.K. is the last world power to retain a state-sanctioned religion – the Axiom sect of Enaldirianism. Although the natural features of this part of the continent are idyllic and beautiful, a not-insignificant proportion of its citizens live in what the U5 recognizes as ‘abject poverty’. During the Great Exodus pushed by the Riverfall Dynasty in the early 1400s, a number of religious orders and ethnicities considered undesirable by the (now defunct) bloodline were forced out of Tempora and into the Occidental Kingdom.
