Schönberg

"A frosty wind bites at your skin, but a warmth settles in your chest as the friendly dwarven woman across the street invites you over for hearty soup. This is Schönberg - a place where community stands steadfast in the face of nobility and nature."
The fourth largest Nirkhumish settlement, the city of Schönberg is a self-sufficient locale that stands in the very center of the Schneespitze Tundra. It marks the midpoint of the Gelbestraße between Nurn Durahl and Starkhammer, placing it at the central point of the continent. As Thur Nirkhum is the oldest of the U5, Schönberg is one of the oldest cities in the world (having been erected close to the end of the first century, around the same time that Starkhammer was built).

Demographics

As with all major Nirkhumish settlements, Schönberg is primarily Dwarven. However, it is far more diverse than Nurn Durahl or Starkhammer due to its central positioning and rich religious communities.

Government

Schönberg is ruled by the Noble Triumvirate - three Noble Kinsmen who control the major facets of Schöner industry. These families are the eponymous Kin Schönberg (controlling production of natural resources, including ley energy and adamantium), Kin Webern who owns the fields of Frosttip Wheat used to produce cereal, and Kin Berg who deals in transportation and cargo across the Gelbestraße. Each family worships a major deity and donates a major percentage of their earnings to their respective church in the Kether District - Schönberg to Enaldir, Webern to Sibyll, and Berg to Zisnera. However, the city of Schönberg itself is not explicitly theocratic.

Defences

Schönberg's defenses are based entirely in its extraordinarily remote location - the center of a tundra surrounded by the Coronet Highlands. If Thur Nirkhum were to have a war, it would be prudent to seize this city and prevent trade between Starkhammer and Nurn Durahl.

Infrastructure

Beyond the wheat farms, on the most remote outskirts of the massive city to the east and west of town, exist two massive arcane wells harvesting energy from the Paraelemental Plane of Ice to coalesce into material energy and export to Misty Run, Severnia, and Hresvelg.   As the city was founded on the midpoint of the road stretching between ends of the continent, there was a massive emphasis on keeping the central part of town as well-maintained as possible. The road here is flawlessly well-kept, enchanted by local wizards to become weatherproofed and perfectly smooth.

Districts

The city is shaped like a three-leafed clover, with each of the 'leaves' built and begun by one of the three noble houses. All three parts are built around the central downtown, which has four sub-districts within itself.   The Exterior of Schönberg:   Seria is the largest of the three 'leaves', and is home to approximately 40% of the town's populace. It is represented by Kin Schönberg in matters of law and policy, and the majority of individuals who work jobs that participate in their industry (ley extraction, adamantium mining, stonecutting, smithing, etc.) reside here. It has the most notable class divide of the three exterior districts; the further one moves between the downtown and the outlands, the more visibly poor it becomes.   Combinus is the second largest of the three 'leaves', and is home to 35% of the town's populace. It is represented by Kin Webern in matters of law and policy. Many individuals who live here work in the wheat fields, but is nowhere near as homogenous in career as Seria. This district is home to Triumvirate University, Thur Nirkhum's largest research university that employs a substantial number of individuals and enrolls people from all over the region. Though their applied arcana courses aren't nearly as robust as Severnia University, The Academy of Ancient Studies, or the Avena Monastery, they offer degrees in theoretical magic to aid in industry. It is the most expensive of the three districts to call home, but the quality of life is quite high here.   Dedoca is the smallest of the three 'leaves', and is home to approximately 15% of the town's populace. It is represented by Kin Berg in matters of law and policy, and only a minority of individuals who work jobs that participate in their industry (cargo & transportation) reside here. It has minimal class divide, but a lower quality of life than Combinus.   The Interior of Schönberg:   Schönberg's downtown is separated into four sub-districts, with expensive urban housing scattered throughout. Only about 10% of the town's populace lives in the downtown, and the majority of these individuals are merchants who own businesses directly in these areas.   The Zakon District is where the city's central political buildings and institutions reside, including the courthouse, town hall, and other clerical matters.   The Kether District is the city's preeminent religious district, containing cathedrals and churches for most of the major deities (and a few of the minor). Their major institutions include massive temples to Enaldir, Sibyll, and Zisnera; other worshipped deities are listed below: The Forum District is the city's major shopping district, containing a wealth of imported goods that are inaccessible anywhere else in the city. The majority of people who live downtown live here. This is also Schönberg's oldest district, as it encompasses the entirety of the Gelbestraße due to need for easily accessible trade.   The Prabanga District is the city's entertainment district. Like Nurn Durahl, Schönberg has an extensive tradition of Musical Theater - however, productions here are significantly more experimental than anything in the capital's Rubin District.

Climate

Schönberg has a tundra climate. Thus, for 9 months of the year, the temperature rarely exceeds freezing and possesses long nights.
