Misty Run

"An impossibly vast metropolis in itself, it may as well be its own country separate from all of that outlander riff-raff."
  • Emperor Mordecai Gorecrest, CY 1600
  • Demographics

50% human, 25% elves and their descendants, 15% dwarves and their descendants, 5% halflings, 5% miscellaneous races (genasi, firbolgs, aarakocra, gnomes, etc.)

    Government

Misty Run is a representative socialist democracy, where it combines a mixture of self-governance (mutual aid, community policing, limited corporate interests, etc.) with elected representatives to the highest seats of power (High President of the Temporan Democratic Regime, Temporan Cabinet of Affairs, etc.). Since the regime was brought about in CY 1619, the overall economic standing of the metropolis has been wildly more successful after the elimination of Watchers and the abdication of the final dynastic empress, Orion Ermendrud in that same year.

    Defences

Again, Misty Run is the Ringed City - if the city ever comes under siege, the Ring Militiae will immediately fortify the gates of the city walls and primarily defend the Outer Boundaries. This, when mixed with the dense housing and farmland of the Outer Boundaries, will create a nigh-impenetrable wall that cannot be passed without extreme magical means.

    Industry & Trade

The urban sectors of Misty Run - the Merchant's Ring, Inner Circle, and Capital Hill - are all primarily areas for individuals to buy and sell artisan wares. The closer one gets to Capital Hill, the more expensive prices become thanks to the lengthy history of class-based segregation that has yet to be completely dissolved.   The Outer Boundaries, however, are the breadbasket of Tempora. They produce all of the grain and rice the continent could ever desire, and is likely the most integral part of the state's industry. Without the toil of these farmers (whose quality of life has increased drastically since CY 1619), Tempora would effectively starve.

    Infrastructure

Misty Run has the most complex infrastructure of any settlement in Uthilith, thanks to its extensive system of walls created by the Frostburn Dynasty to completely segregate the residents by income and class. Thus, it's accompanied by a robust road system for merchant trade (at least through the inner three rings) from places in which Misty Run lacks the resources - lumber from St. Cethleann's Landing, masonry from Nord'ial, or seafood from Lurelin to the southeast.

    Assets

Misty Run is easily the strongest city in Uthilith when it comes to population with pure arcane prowess - thus, the city has a significant amount of magic and magical technology to amplify daily life. In the vaults beneath the Palace of Twilight, the entire material wealth of the government in both pure platinum and magical artifice resides. Some of the objects the government keep under lock and key, lest they fall into the hands of individuals looking to destroy the new regime from the inside out.

    Guilds and Factions

Misty Run is primarily affected by the educational and religious institutions that reside in the Inner Circle, the wealthiest area available to the common folk in the Ringed City. The high majority of the Cabinet (excluding provincial representatives and their respective governments) are graduates or acolytes from one of the following institutions:
    • The Academy of Ancient Studies produces the most talented wizards in Uthilith, and its theoretical graduates of departments like archaeology or theology are nothing to sneeze at either. Folks who went to this school are given preferential treatment by the populace in elections, as it was established by Astrid Ermendrud during the original dynastic rule of Tempora.
    • The Conservatoire de Brouillard isn't solely a music school, but also one of oratory - thus, bards who graduate from here tend to be particularly good at rhetoric and policy.
    • The Enaldirian Church's primary locale at Temple of Candor is presided over individuals who seek the truth and nothing but the truth, and won't hesitate to call out corruption within the judiciary system of Tempora.
    • Lastly, the Zisneran Church (and thus the Spire of the Heavens) has been one of the largest advocates for aiding the populace since this particular location was established amidst the Age of Anxiety - thus, they tend to understand what the working class needs more than individuals who graduated from an exorbitantly expensive educational institution.

    History

After years of aimless travelling throughout the cognition of the Creator, Astrid Ermendrud and her two close companions came across a place at the most powerful intersection of the world's arcane ley lines - the center of the Temporan continent, atop the sole hill in the Danrose Plains. The three, with all of their magical prowess combined, created the Palace of Twilight to begin life anew. As the population of the world ballooned, Astrid and Timothy Brenatto created two foundational places of learning to assist in the growth of the continent... Tempora, they called it.   Strife would come in wake of Astrid's death and subsequent ascension to the Goddess of Arcana, and Colston Clay would become the newest emperor of the nation. Timothy, his husband, would be murdered by a group of assassins solely in the name of bloodshed, and the country would fall into The Age of Anxiety.   For the next millennium, Tempora would be subject to violent shifts in regime, uprisings, and cult activity. It wasn't until the first truly totalitarian force would coerce the country into order, starting with establishing the rings of Misty Run. Aside from changes in dynasty and an increase in colonial might, nothing substantial would change until a plucky group known as The Stonebounders came along to free the country from puppet emperor Mordecai Gorecrest and puppetmaster advisor Arden Riverfall.   The final legitimate heir to the dynastic throne - Orion Ermendrud - would abdicate seven days following her ascension to empress. She would mandate significant changes to governmental structure with the assistance of Karyon Beeching, creating the Provincial Democratic Conclave of Tempora.

    Tourism

Tourists primarily stick to the Merchant's Ring, and if they can afford the exorbitant costs, they'll go into the Inner Circle. Shopping in this metropolis is extraordinarily robust - it's the Uthilithian hub of fashion, music, and art. There's also an abundance of museums, religious structures, and libraries (including The Great Library) to explore.

    Architecture

The three innermost circles of Misty Run are overwhelmingly in the English Gothic style - homes, churches, shops, all are this extraordinarily ornate form of architecture, constructed primarily by clerics of structure goddess O'sha.     The Outer Boundaries are quite a bit more simple - it's constructed primarily of lumber imported from St. Cethleann's Landing, and has only been brought up to code in the last sixty years or so. Misty Run's government is still in the process of replacing the thatched huts of yesteryear with properly ventilated structures.

    Geography

Misty Run is built atop the Danrose Plains - an extensive central plain unified around a hill where the Palace of Twilight now stands. The Plains are extremely fertile and ideal for growing grain, root vegetables, and legumes.

    Natural Resources

The primary natural resources extracted from Misty Run are crops (as stated previously) and consolidated magical energy, used to fuel vehicles like airships and cruisers or to energize entire industries of production found in rural areas like Chacester.
