Aberra

"You awaken the following morning, somehow crammed with four other people into a queen-sized bed. The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and you all have nasty headaches. Oh, what a classic morning in Aberra this is."   -Elmo Cobbletoe, CY 1679

Demographics

Aberra is a predominantly Stout Halfling, as it began when Pavel Gavinies (founder of House Gavinies evicted the population from their city of Oakenshire in CY 1112.
  • 48% Stout Halflings
  • 22% Humans
  • 12% Moon Elves
  • 11% Hill Dwarves
  • 4% Dragonborn
  • 3% others

Government

Aberra is governed by a Lord/Lady Mayor who presides over their City Council. The Aberran City Council is a group of five elected officials who serve the five districts of Aberra, acting on all legislative issues that deal with town policy. Provincial legislation is carried out by the ruling House (they also act as the judiciary for major cases).   The councilmembers are as follows:
  • Elmo Cobbletoe - detailed further in his article.
  • Alyss Faughn (she/her/hers) - human city council member, chaotic good. In her mid to late 30s. Represents one of two suburban constituencies in Aberra and is a strong advocate for workers’ rights. Fairly intense (in comparison to the other four members of the Aberra council), but her heart is definitely in the right place. Before moving to Aberra, she was banished from House Palatius territory for stabbing a union-buster. Giggly drunk.
  • Sylvie Daefina (she/her/hers) - half-elf city council member, chaotic neutral. Approximately 40 years old (around 25 or so in human years). Represents the constituency holding the Aberra Provincial University (the only institute of higher education in the province, ranked last among all options in Iacchus Argentum). Has experience in educational administration, graduated summa cum laude in International Economics from the Avena Monastery across the continent. A ‘woo’ girl when intoxicated.
  • Valerie Denouement (she/her/hers) - human city council member, chaotic good. About 50 years old. Represents the second of two suburban constituencies in Aberra, this one being where the majority of merchants actually live. The only magically-educated member of the council (studied briefly at the Avena Monastery), this transmuter wizard spends her days directly serving the people by performing maintenance and upkeep that were originally intended to be done by the provincial government. Her familiar is a chameleon named Liz. A very sleepy drunk.
  • Garçons Jacobin (he/him/his) - half-orc city council member, lawful good. About 55 years old (definitely a silver fox). Represents the farmland constituency of Aberra, and thus the poorest members of Aberran society. Was the most suspicious of Nadia’s ascension to head of House Moor, but quickly accepted it after the council interacted with the Killjoys on a pub crawl.

Districts

Aberra is divided into five distinct districts.   Downtown is where most business is carried out, possessing a wide range of shops and stalls. All of the town government buildings are located in the district. Magician's Row - a street of stores that sell specialized magic items - is one of Aberra's main draws (particularly because it's the only place like it until Port Aquea several hundred miles south of town).   Phenbrigg Plaza is the primary residential district, and exists as a series of neighborhoods where the majority of Aberrans live. A temple called the Temple of Saint Sanscomb serves as the main religious institution in town, defining Aberra as predominantly worshippers of Ciden/Verna.   The Collegiate District is the largest Aberran district in population, as it hosts the Aberran Provincial University. 'Townies' know not to enter the Collegiate District on weekend evenings, lest they face the annoyance of drunk college students.   Potsit Place is a secondary residential district, and the folks who tend to live here are merchants who frequently go in and out of town. Thus, the housing is a bit less spacious than that of Phenbrigg Plaza, but the people who live here care not.   The Laborer's District is home to extensive farmland and the Tent Village, where the most destitute of Aberrans end up due to various circumstances. There also stands a Druid's Tower on the south side of this locale, who helps with all agricultural needs.

Points of interest

One of Aberra's biggest draws is the sheer number of pubs and bars that are in town. A tradition at APU is the Reading Day Pub Crawl, where you go to ten bars in twelve hours - two for each district - to get as wasted as possible.
