Deadwastes
The Deadwastes are a large, barren and lifeless wasteland located on the border between Elderan and Osirin.
The Deadwastes are a vast stretch of barren land, irradiated with strange Magics, on which nothing grows, leaving only lifeless, dry soil and dead trees for miles. The waters of the Carthin River, which flows down from Boundary Hill, through the Deadwastes, and to the sea, is often a dark, unnatural colour, before later diluting before it reaches the coast. This darkened water is poisonous, with the fish that swim up river dying, with the corpses that wash to shore often being mutated with growths and irritations. The people of New Carthin, who live on the banks on the Carthin River, treat all the water they collect from the river, to lessen the potential impact of the Deadwaste's radiation.
The wasteland is largely uninhabited, the environment toxic to those who spend an extended period of Time there, with even birds avoiding to fly over it. Despite this, there are evidence of Myrmex colonies living beneath the Deadwastes, as well as rumours of terrible, mutated creatures that stalk the wastes, ambushing any travellers that would dare cross it.
The Deadwastes were formed under mysterious circumstances in 2032 AF, during the conflict known as the Betrayer War, between the Kingdom of Lorth'elon and the Varin Empire. During a battle fought on the border, the entirety of both armies fighting in the conflict were killed in a massive, Magical explosion, which vaporised the surrounding area, destroying the Dun'Vol town of Dur’gol and the Empire town of Carthin in the process, leaving only lifeless ruins in their place. Both sides of the conflict blamed each other for the explosion, but the true instigator remains unknown. The mass casualties, including the death of the leader of the Church of Apostasy, Pontifex Dogan, lead to the Kingdom of Lorth'elon and the Varin Empire coming to an uneasy truce, ending the war.
