Railroad Properties - Downtown

The area astride the tracks and along the river is a wide, weedy, barren area covered with sidings, small warehouses, empty freight cars, storage and equipment sheds, an old water tower, and the B&M (Boston and Maine Railroad ) right-of-way. Here sit idle passenger cars, graffiti-layered boxcars, bright yellow track repair machinery, a few battered service vehicles, old barrels, discarded bits of metal, and the like. Hoboes and the local criminal element find the tracks yard a good place for nocturnal activities, and hoboes occasionally put up for a night in the yard, daring railroad guards who are notoriously violent. The New Jerusalem police patrol here frequently.   This area is also patrolled regularly by Sarge and Luey, two tough, hard-nosed German Shepherds. They brook no foolishness and are not likely to be in a talkative mood. They are not adverse to letting animals pass through and pass along, but they will not put up with any meddling with the vehicles, tracks, or equipment.   Billy Dexter is a hobo whotries to stay in the railroad properties along the river when he's around, though he sometimes falls foul of the railroad guards who watch them and can be bearing bruises as a result. Billy is reasonably clean and tidy, as he takes care of his clothes and washes whenever he has the chance, even if that’s only in the river. He’s not always in New Jerusalem, and over the years he has seen some strange things, things that he is generally unwilling to talk about. He has been able to make friends with Sarge and Luey, and they do their best to leave him be when they come across him.
