Hamburger Charlie's - 400 Fish Row

This small hamburger stand is little more than a metal roofed hut measuring in at barely 15'x 20'. Almost a hundred years ago it was a small stable, and throughout the years the space has been used for a variety of different enterprises. Since 1948 it has been owned by Charles Manning, a New Jerusalem local.   Charles, better known to most simply as Charlie, is a WWII veteran who served in Europe and was at Utah Beach and Sainte-Mère-Église on D-Day. After the war Charlie returned home and kicked around doing various jobs until he finally decided he'd rather work for himself than another and used his small savings to open Hamburger Charlie's.   Though many, particularly the other diner owners in town, do not wish to admit it, Charlie makes the best and most affordable hamburgers in all of New Jerusalem. The fare at the stand is simple, consisting of hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hotdogs, French fries, bagged chips, bottled drinks, and abundant hot coffee, although Charlie has been known to make a fast grilled cheese sandwich for his favorite customers.   The food, although simple, is ridiculously good and more than reasonable in cost. Charlie's most famous dish is his Atomic Burger, a burger that has Charlie's homemade chili and cherry peppers on it.   The stand is opened Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. It is often crowded at lunchtime and end of work day with those rushing back to or coming from work and with some occasional travelers and workers from the train yard wolfing down Charlie's good, hot, cheap burgers while he regales the crowd with war stories. Pops Henderson can be found here almost every evening having his dinner.   Charlie famously loves all animals, and he feeds many a stray out the back of the stand, much to the consternation of the neighbors. He also has a weakness for the shape of a finely made woman, and a good number of the Downtown secretaries like to dine here for Charlie's 'pretty girl' discount, as well as a few who would like a deeper connection with the handsome, burly veteran.
