American House Hotel - 412 Fish Row

Once a fairly respectable and sturdily built hotel, it has now become a cheap flop for transients, failures, and worse. Rooms are $1.50 a night, and the operators and clientele alike are often no better than they ought to be.   Disaster struck this heretofore-unremarkable hotel in 1928. A fire on the second-floor rapidly spread, and many guests were trapped because the emergency exits were locked. Five people perished, including the owner. The fire began when a jilted lover discovered her man with another woman at the hotel. She doused them with gasoline and lit their bed on fire. The place was rebuilt to the same unremarkable standards of the original, and houses guests to this day.   Much to the management's dismay, guests and hotel staff occasionally report hearing screams and smelling gasoline, typically on the second floor. These complaints are most frequent in November, when the fire took place.   Ed Dunlap: in his fifties, six feet tall, sandy-haired, and gaunt-looking, Dunlap claims to be a vacuum cleaner salesman from Philadelphia. In truth, Dunlap is working for mysterious others on a job that few could or would believe. Dunlap's luggage holds not vacuum cleaner samples but some of the equipment used in removing and storing unique information.   Dunlap parks his Studebaker Starlight coupe behind the hotel. In the afternoon he sometimes drives north out of town, not returning until well after sunset. He may be meeting his employers. He also often consults the University Library's copies of their rare volumes. At the library he poses as a visiting scholar, Adrian Hennepeck, to gain Dr. Jonathan Worthman's permission to consult the books.   On the ground floor immediately adjacent and connected in the back is a bar called the Maid's Lament.
