Independence Square - The Common

Officially opened in 1797, Independence Square is a vast expanse of open green, nearly eight acres in size, owned by the citizens of New Jerusalem. It replaced the old militia training ground south of the river, which was ceded to Missituk College.   The square is surrounded by an iron fence four feet high. The official entrance, a massive arch thought to have been designed by Salem architect Samuel Mclntyre, is found on the Peabody Avenue side, facing Town Hall. The Common (as everyone calls it) serves as a picnic ground and gathering site. There is a roofed bandstand as well as a baseball diamond on the grounds.   This is the site of Winterfest, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, Forefathers' Day (weather permitting), and other celebrations, observances, and gatherings, and of the annual summer Founder's Day Festival.   Many Dogs and Cats can be found here at almost anytime, although dogs are more likely in the daylight hours and cats as evening comes on. The Common is an agreed neutral ground by all the local packs and parliaments. The breaking of this policy can lead to serious consequences for the offender(s).
