early this morning meledri came by the h&h and together we all teleported to the temple of the silver flame in sigilstar
teleportation is somewhat surreal because there's little sense of having travelled at all ... except for medya who still doesn't handle it well but at least she recovers quickly
from there it was a short walk to the garden-framed home of "bishop verika soder"
she prepared some lovely citrus tea for us to enjoy!
but we discussed unpleasant matters
fiends are very skilled at corrupting people so any group fighting them needs their members to frequently check each other for signs of trouble
the council of cardinals has been refusing these checks and they call any attempt to investigate them a threat to their authority
verika assigned luka to ask for help from another trusted fiend-opposed group called the "ghaash'ashtaa" ... and the council retaliated by accusing him of "murder and heresy"!
we headed back to the temple with verika who then inducted us into luka's "hearthguard" which gave us the authority to investigate luka's case
then we had to teleport again – poor medya!
the city of "thaliost" was once the capital city of aundair but thrane occupied it during the war so thrane's guards are everywhere and it feels strange and tense like conflict could happen at any time
so i stayed indoors as much as i could
thaliost prison felt a bit too indoors
if trapped in a small space with no clear way out most if not all ponies will go into a full panic and force their way out ... even if the attempt injures or kills themselves and others
so when the royal guard has to detain someone they do so in large barred pens that keep the outside clearly visible
the idea is to help a pony come to their senses and reason – not to make matters worse through torture
by contrast the prison's design seemed calculated to make everyone feel worse
when the guards brought luka into the visitation area his wrists were bound with heavy bracelets chained close together
at least we were able to talk privately
"archbishop solgar dariznu" asked him to investigate one of many recent deaths at the tower construction site
luka learned that they almost certainly weren't accidental – all of them were folks who had been vocal in favor of thaliost becoming an independent territory
then two masked people attacked him
while fleeing them he lost his dagger ... which later turned up in a nearby house alongside a pair of murders he couldn't have committed
then he was captured and the guards interrogated him under a "zone of truth" spell but now they claim he's so corrupt that the spell failed?
for a church all about fighting evil the leadership don't seem very attentive or engaged
we promised luka we'd do our best to clear his name then we left to start our own investigation at that house
here's where it gets grim
their neighbors said the victims were unusually vocal about joining the church over a year ago
their place was humble and fairly tidy except for the prayer nook where fiendish symbols had been painted in blood all over the walls like what we saw in jorlanna's basement lab
the floor held a magic circle punctuated by iron stakes and rope to bind the victims ... but zer' noticed that the knots wouldn't have held up in a real struggle
it all seemed staged
next we went to the unfinished tower of cardinals
it's built in what meledri calls the "klee-flamist style" – well-proportioned geometric forms in bright metal and glass
i'm rather fond of its look
in the construction office we gathered quite a bit of paperwork including records on everyone who's worked there
it would take a lot of time to dig through it all for anything noteworthy so we brought the whole stack back to the nearby "red inn" where we're staying for the week
after several hours of reading the only pattern we could work out was that almost all those who died over the last year or so were involved in the construction of the tower and nearly all of those were known to be opposed to the thranian occupation of thaliost
there was a knock at the door and bell reached to open it then
as if the day hadn't already been a trial
as if the night hadn't already been frustrating
raelvan
in like a garish freak storm
he complained that he'd travelled some distance to kill luka who'd gotten himself wrongly imprisoned first
. . .
meledri swung her hammer at him – faster than i could see! – and he grabbed the head of it with all the impact of a dropped loaf of bread
what i felt after that is entirely new to me
i was so stunned and confused and disgusted with him
tense with such focus that everything else in the room sounded muffled and even seemed faded to grey
i didn't want to let him talk but i had to know what he was saying
he went on about needing things to happen "according to the plan" and for him that means getting luka released but he doesn't know who the actual murderer is
he showed us the puppetry rig and promised to give it to us once we've finished our business in thaliost but only if we promised to take it elsewhere as soon as we can
he hasn't lied to us yet
somehow even his honesty aggravates me
he went on about other fiends interfering with his work and why they want the skillshare and how we all don't want that
at one point he complained that spark is impatient and "if you're ever to embrace your inner immortal you'll have to learn to breathe"
not only is that an inappropriate metaphor for 3 on toward 5 of us
it's a real sentence that says nothing useful
anyhow the moment he left i lit up my pipe and once i'm done journalling tonight i'll light it again
. . .
