medya and i both did a lot of shouting yesterday
she's got the right vocal apparatus to make all the loud noises she wants but i don't so now i sound like i spent yesterday gargling nettles
the good news is that most of them were happy shouts!
but before all the shouting there was a wonderful summer sun rise that medya and i sat and watched ... from a point a third-hour away in "north market" because we can't actually see the sun from the h&h
after that it was a busy morning because forged were lined up for a proper shine before the tournament the same way ponies will queue in front of a salon before a big celebration
which reminds me that i haven't had a proper mane-and-tail trim in a while now
... or a hoof trim (the rear pair) for nearly 3 months and that's going a bit long especially given what i've been walking on and in
some local farrier is getting an unusual customer sometime soon
just before noon medya and i went to watch the race of the 8 winds which happens to start in lower dura where bell's tent was when i arrived
medya could see the whole course up and down the tower but i had to buy a "farscope" lorgnette – useful trinket for field work!
the first round of happy shouting started as they announced the racers
most were flying animals with bipeds sitting on them but one was a "gargoyle" named "carralag" who had his own wings
there was an eberron "gryphon" whose rider seemed less interested in racing and more in forcing other competitors out and somehow that's within the rules but it's not very sporting
other than that it was an exciting race! and the winners were a "jockey" rider from upper dura and a "pegasus" which is to the pegasus ponies back home like a horse is to a prairie pony
after that very loud event we stopped at a quiet eatery for lunch then it was back to the h&h
we were asked to provide support for possible injuries at metal on metal
of course we agreed so the afternoon involved preparing the necessary equipment then moving it to the venue
malleon's pit
everyone checked in to make sure i was all right going there and i was very glad for the support but it's not as though it was a surprise to me
as we got in sight of it i did pause and stare but only because i was working out angles and velocities out of morbid curiosity
...
no
the truth is that i was trapped in the moment somehow watching from outside as cazha swung
distant but clear like through the farscope lorgnette
some part of me is still trying to understand what happened that day but it defies logic and emotional sense so all that remains is physics
so i worked out the angles and the velocities and now i have numbers so at least some questions are answered
the maul's gone but now i have souvenirs that can't be stolen
that only lasted a few seconds and after that i really was all right
i'm surprised at how easily i slipped into the energy of the crowd and found myself cheering for the fighters when they dodged and maneuvered and landed blows
it's not as though i haven't known ponies who love to spar
they agree to accept injuries and help each other if they happen so there won't be hurt feelings or anger and this was exactly the same
just a friendly exhibition
except two of the fighters were being very unfriendly – "alder" and "garrison" fought in ways meant for real battle
apparently they were there on behalf of "girder" who is the owner of a dust bar called "sands of time" that's switched to selling ash so it's all starting to look a little troubling
barrer and spark bested them in the semi-finals anyhow and then in the final match they ... were interrupted
by someone shooting arrows at spark
i was a little concerned about the uninvited biped holding a longbow twice my height
when i asked spark via zer's link if she knew what was going on she said yes but then ... didn't ... explain!
i had to wait until after they shot more arrows and flame at each other
and then dowser interrupted by trying to save spark from the fight she didn't actually want saving from
and then she and the archer agreed to shoot at each other some more until the archer yielded
and then spark and barrer had the grand finale fight that was actually supposed to be happening and even though spark still had an arrow stuck in her she won the fight
and then we had the immediate celebrations and spark branding folks' program leaflets
i had to wait until we were on the road toward home for everything to be quiet enough for me to get that explanation
in short she's trying to join some other fighting tournament called the "mahtabereth"
to get in she has to wear a special pin and then collect 3 by winning fights against other competitors who can just randomly show up anytime to try to take hers
i'll have a talk with spark later about how i need advance warning if she plans to wear it while i'm around because there are enough unexpected events in my life right now and this didn't help
even if any given scare doesn't go in the figurative saddlebags it still disrupts my balance when it drops on me
i haven't mentioned the music yet but three bands performed in the intermissions
the first were "tôl veksi" and they were all about deep voices with only drums alongside
i recognized the third from the assortment on my songbeetle – "go krodd go" are heavy on rhythm and energetic woodwinds and i like their stuff
but the ones to really get my attention and wholly entrance medya were "the instrumentals" – they generate all their sound entirely with magic!
their drummer tapped at a rack of beautiful metal hexagons but the sounds that came out were nothing like ... any physical thing
one sat at a wide frame with an eyelash-like spread of narrow levers that sounded like full chords of alien textures
one used a bow with a string made of light to saw at what looked like medya's spike-fiddle but with no resonance box
instruments stripped to their bones and given magical voice
medya talked with them afterward and they've already invited her to a jam session! so we invited them to join us at the afterparty at the h&h
that was also a lot of fun but around midnight rakela came by and announced she had to act as the "fun police" – by which she meant we should call an end to the night before "party" became "nuisance" which was totally understandable
she also had news for us that wasn't really good times material
leali had an update on the next mournland expedition ... in that it's delayed until the cannith family sorts things out after recent events
i'm not thrilled about that but there's no rushing that sort of thing and we're definitely not going out there on our own so we wait for now
rakela then presented what she could dig up about the "monstrous regiments" – something zhakil mentioned to bell when they met recently (it's a long story of its own and i wasn't there)
during the war breland assembled the monstrous regiments (what a terrible name!) from any kith willing to fight for breland's victory in exchange for citizenship and some of the land being fought over
they were considered expendable
but when the forged showed up they were even more expendable and posted fewer casualties so the king disbanded the regiments ... and the promise of land
most just went back home angry
most of those who stayed live in khyber's gate now
the kith must feel so betrayed by breland
they were driven off of their land by total strangers who took over and then centuries later promised some of it back as a reward for being disposable soldiers and then broke the promise and stuck them in the most miserable part of sharn and shuffled the history of the whole mess under the rug
i know i feel betrayed by breland now!
i'm glad i heard this story because now i know not to put any faith in boranel's wisdom
in more good news rakela's going to ask watch captain "iyanna" to let us into the sewers so we can hunt down a possessed murderer
... it's possible that my definition of good news has shifted somewhat in my time here
so most of highbright was really great! but i did a lot of happy shouting and my voice is a little rough this morning so it'll be licorice tea with honey while i work
we've got plenty more jewelry songs to learn
