After that intense fight Skrel started playing his violin reminding us of simpler times. A time just after our first encounter with the bramblemancers. They were gathered around a campfire that night. Kniana, Eval, Skrel, Lily, Tamebrass, and Fizpin were all chatting away I was doing my usual of working away when I was called over to explain my Ring of Sustenance to Tamebrass. I explained the concept of it which got them on the conversation of eating, or rather drinking, for pleasure such as vampires and wine. Eval seemed to know about them and even Fizpin asked, apparently they are partial to the cold up north, being undead and unaffected. My only knowledge on the subject came from the bios of some book I once found in Maki's shop. Something about them in highschool. Skrel said it was a crap book and not worth saving. Him being a Glyphkin, that really meant something... They continued the conversation with something about how they get blood there was talk of a straw? I just slunk away back to my cart.
After our reminiscing, Maki spotted a golem-sized hole in one of the walls in the direction of Naan. He figured it to be moving about 54mph and we COULD have intercepted it, but decided it was better to let it return to the Emporium. At least there it could defend as normal if Naan had any issues like all these other settlements. Eval asked about what happened to Skrel not dying there in that fight. I told them of the magics Maldrek, er, I used to prevent Skrel's demise. Stuff usually out of my range due to the divine nature of the spells. RRRoshin even cast cure disease on Eval to avoid some abyssal filthfever from the hellrats. Those little demons almost looked to be puppeted by the masked figure back in the library. Skrel even called me over an topped me and Lily off on health. Little strange given his condition of near death and life casting. I suppose it was how he was showing gratitude. Lily ended up killing someone in the shadow plane and produced a halberd and a potion. I guess that mask of hers had many interesting properties. Skrel puzzled over the potion before asking my opinion. I found it to be a potion of Gaseous Form for 16minutes. It was labeled as Batch 6, Potion 4 from the Valerin Snaggletooth branch. Eval questioned it since Valerin's stance of magic, but I said that potions were mostly allowed. Then we took off toward the inner gates.
We kept our path to the inner gates and tis time passed more skeletal guards, but this time they had upkept armor, polished even. Just past them was a whole pack of these leaf wolves with a dire one seeming to lead them. Eval was surprised at the level of intelligence of the wolves. Nothing crazy to me after telling him the story of the time I put a headband of intelligence on a fish. He seemed to question life a bit after that. We entered a hall of sorts and Skrel talked to his weapon that seemed to respond in kind truing into a sphere again. RRRoshin went off to take care of his own business but warns Kniana of tricksters or something before leaving. She looked up and seemed to recognize someone.
We passed through the pack of wolves and I tried to keep someone between me and a wolf at all times. The damn things were too big in my opinion. I want Bessy back. At least they seemed friendly with Kniana. We continued to a grand staircase that was absolutely massive. I had enough of the walking today and the winds seemed fine so I cast floating disk as did Maki. We gently rode them up with the group on save for Skrel who used his new wings to fly himself up. We had a bit of time for the ride so Maki and I bounce ideas back and forth of a mechanical or magical device for stair assistance. Something like an auto escalation device or escalat-or. Perhaps a staircase with optional elevation device with floating disks or elevat-or. Skrel made the comment to have safety at the top and bottom of the device. Eval talked of feeling drained much like myself. I said that we might yet find a healer in this place.
We make it to the top of the stairs and everyone else hopped off the disks. Skrel was already conversing with an ancient looking ratfolk. The younger rat cast something like Bear's Endurance to try to help Eval. The older one talked with Eval and healed his drain citing him some diamond at some point. My attention was waning, so I simply started to rotate the disk to provide some entertainment as Kniana talked with this new person. She talked as though she knew him to some degree, but he didn't seem to know her. Up until she shifted to her elf form and the guy nearly had a heart attack on seeing her. It made more sense after learning he hadn't seen her in over 1400 years...
They recovered and conversed some more as I kept myself entertained. After their mini reunion we started toward the main keep. The ratfolk Kniana called Dalton asked us to keep our arms in our sheaths. "Sheaths? but arms go in sleeves..." not my proudest moment, but I still had that fog that Eval described earlier. Skrel pulled out his orb again and told it to behave pretty intimidatingly. It responded by turning into a pencil sized spear. That item is intelligent, but I still have never seen something that morphic outside of mimics. We made it across a dried up moat and the landscape changed pretty drastically. The kind of desolate abandoned look turned into a fairly vibrant courtyard. Plant and animals seemed to be living in peace with a large statue of Taltharian. and even a statue of Kniana's elven form in the distance a bit. The ratfolk asked us to rest and eat and summoned what looked like a Hero's Feast, but it seemed like more... I was still floating around when Skrel grabbed me nearly forcing food down my throat. I just sheepishly asked if it was rude to eat in front of skeletons. Again, my wits were dimmed. Lily even tried to shame me and Skrel asked about applications of siege weapons to Tibbits. Heh, cat-apult. I ended up Mage Handing a cake over again as Skrel was shoveling mashed potatoes into his mouth. At some point a conversation of the magical loaf of bread came up. I had heard that story when I was still early on in artifistry. It was cursed with sentience and used mage had to move. It's ultimate demise came from being eaten by a tengu. We even chatted a bit about the one of the few annual Snaggletooth holidays the Hunter's Moon. They wondered about it so I simply stated that over the years it was deemed more trouble than it was worth for production with the magics going weird. Granted it was about the only UNIFIED day off of the guild, each regional section had their own holidays that they had.
We ate and chatted some more before the rest on them took off to go bathe. I stayed back to keep eating and use Prestidigitation to clean myself. I'm almost out of my bitterleaf oil and trying to make what I do have last. It had been over a month since I ate like this, I was going to make it last.
