Summary

A sector-renown floral artist and gardener, Brian Evers is known for his macabre tastes and haunting landscapes.

History

  • Skills as a gardener came about in protest to the war
  • Eager to support his country, Brian had enlisted as soon as he was old enough, and due to his skills in telepathy and hand-to-hand, his officers made him an infiltrator
  • His telepathy allowed him to integrate into isolated Monhalian squads without arousing suspicion
  • It also showed him that Abraia wasn't the valiant hero defending against Monhalian villains. After years of spending more time with "the enemy" than his allies, he concluded all soldiers were merely pawns of the politicians, dying for their bottom line.
  • After leaving the military with an honorable discharge, he spent years at his family's vineyard learning to cope with the nightmares and flashbacks war left him. His family, and his younger sister Loren in particular, was by his side even through the worst days.
  • He rebuilt himself, changing his name to Brian Evers to distance himself from his past military life. Gardening and tending to plants became an outlet and way to cope.
  • He came to favor the plants most ignored, whether because they were ugly, or creepy, or dangerous. It started because his experiences in the war made him, too, feel like an ugly, unwanted thing to be culled for something more pleasing.
  • Guerilla Gardener

  • Brian took up guerilla gardening to protest the ongoing war. From tangled vines blocking access to voting chambers, to cascading red flowers to mimic blood, to leaving clear messages with the language of flowers, he used Devali's aggressive plant life to express the ugliness of war in otherwise-idyllic Abraia Central. And call for an end to it.
  • On the day the peace treaty was signed, he planted a garden in the shape of the flag of the new Monhalian Union, in full view of Abraia senate.
  • Floral Artist

  • Afterward, he continued fostering macabre and grotesque plants. His table at street markets always stood out - a dark spot in a sea of vibrancy. For a while, the only customers he got were those being contrarian. Over time, more came to appreciate what he offered.
  • Today his work appears across the sector. He's made sets for films, gardens for mourning families, exhibits for botanic museums, and displays for the rich drawn to the taboo.

    Night Knights

  • Got involved with the Night Knights in 3208
  • They were sent by their employer, the Unchained Armada, to resolve issues regarding the trade of mirasoil
  • Brian's sister, Loren, was morally opposed to the deal due to the health issues inherent with handling mirasoil, and the Night Knights were meant to resolve that conflict, by force if necessary
  • Their solution was to have Loren join the Armada in her capacity as biochemist. Brian, wanting to look out for his sister, was able to secure a position as intelligence officer
  • Their new work had them relocate to Talmar
  • While there, Loren and other Armada scientists were taken hostage by an extremist Yellow Jacket cell. Brian was taken prisoner along with them
  • He was able to break free of his holding cell, and with help from the Night Knights, was able to rescue his sister
  • The two left Talmar shortly before the Battle for Talmar, and ended their employment with the Armada.

    Today

  • Today, Brian has a modest home in the Abraian hills. Dangerous plants surrounding the home discourage onlookers, and he's made it clear he has no interest in entertaining uninvited guests.
  • In a recent interview, he confirmed rumors that he recently married his long-term boyfriend in a private ceremony. He expressed, in no uncertain terms, the desire for continued privacy regarding his personal life. Even the most determined paparazzi values their life enough to respect such a request.

    Trivia

It's been said Brian would only date a man who could beat him at arm wrestling, though Brian himself has never made such comments.

    Author Commentary

    Names shnames
I decided Brian was Loren's brother after I'd introduced them, so the post-military name change was a way to give reason to their mismatched names. I ended up loving the character arc it gave him - from hopeful enlisted to anti-war vet.
    Alpha Brian
One of my players decided his character - Jareth - had an unrequited crush on Brian. Jareth bought one of Brian's spiky plants and named it Brian 2 (and later used it as a weapon). Giving potential love interests Brian-adjacent names became a running joke, including a Brian 3 on Torm and a Brianna on Talmar. In the end, this is how Bry got his name.

    Connections

  • Calm and thoughtful but unyielding, and be unforgiving of those who cross certain lines
  • Skilled at subtly getting information from people, even without telepathy
  • Prefers smaller gatherings. Avoids alcohol and substances. Though much improved, post-traumatic stress still affects his decisions
  • Not above occasional acts of benign mischief, especially to tease members of his close family
  • People & Groups

  • working relationships with other gardeners, as well as sculptors whose work he sometimes includes in his designs
  • though cordial with the occasional former soldier who reaches out, he generally redirects them to post-war support groups
  • a frequent supporter of anti-war/pro-peace/pro-reparation groups, and is rumored to be in talks for a possible VCFS collab
  • Loren Codac (sister)
Though often at odds as children, the siblings are now each other's biggest supporters. Loren's work keeps her off planet, but they still correspond frequently.
    Vantas Vohn
Brian entertains occasional luncheons with the executive. Despite their past conflicts, they both have lost family to the same degenerative disease.
    Night Knights
After their misadventures in 3208, Brian counts the original Night Knights among his friends. He visits them on Talmar when his work takes him there.

    Places

  • Prefers to stay on Devali where his husband and mother are
  • Will travel to other planets for work a couple times a year
  • Devali
His home will always be in Abraia, but he has taken a couple commissions in the Monhalian Union. Though he's tried to distance himself from it, his role in the war leaves him feeling uncomfortable in the southern country.
    Talmar
The only planet Brian will vacation to, and bring his husband. Not only does he know people on the planet, but it's also incredibly unlikely anyone there will want to hire him, making it the perfect escape from work.
