The Monhalian Union is a young parliamentary democracy founded in 3199. It was originally founded as a monarchy, but began transitioning to a parliament after the disappearance of Duke Elias Gabriel Monhala de la Rosa in 3208. The official transition was by popular vote in 3210, which also set Elsion as the Union’s capital city.
The former countess, deemed too young to rule in the Duke’s stead, is now a member of parliament. MP Max de la Rosa runs as independent of any party, despite many attempts by Royalists to enlist them.
Due in part to Señore de la Rosa’s efforts as MP, the Monhalian Union has long outpaced Abraia in number of refugees accepted from Astronius and Rada. Many infrastructure programs are ongoing to improve living situations, primarily ones that find ways to benefit from the local plant life rather than fight against it.
Culture
Though the country itself is young, most native families have lived in the region for generations, and the culture of the area has long diverged from Abraia. Most Monhalians value being able to survive on their own, fed in part by the recent war, but also from the nature of the environment they live within. Unlike Abraia, the Union doesn't have plant-repellent infrastructure. Instead, they invest in methods to work with the planet. The roads are made of moss, their homes are reinforced with vines, and certain flowers protect gardens from pests. Most grow at least some of their own food and learn to defend themselves from aggressive wildlife. The anti-establishment trend that helped feed the war remains present through much of the Union. Large corporations typically aren't wanted, unless there's a direct need for something they supply, and town halls with local governments often become heated. Some of this caused friction with off-planet refugees, who some saw as invaders. It took intense effort from parliament, ambassadors, activists, and other more sympathetic minds to change the narrative from 'invasion' to 'opportunity'.Devalian Locations
