Summary

Despite wanting to improve the Protectorate, Aer's never known exactly how. Their focus is with the Metadimensional Mapmaking Division - exploring the metadimension through data.
Then the Syndicate stole half the data they were reviewing. Now they're racing to decipher what remains before the Syndicate can, just in case the results are meaningful.

If this data leads to a new system, what do you think the Protectorate will do with that information?   Aer had debated this a hundred times. The Protectorate was under too much scrutiny to hide information that big, and any attempt would be used as proof that the alliance was failing. Yet revealing the information could be the catalyst of war, as people fought over territory and resources.   Exactly, Gayle agreed with their unspoken thoughts. No matter what the Protectorate chose to do, it would be the wrong choice. Better to let someone else handle it.   I won't let the Syndicate get credit for our discovery.   You haven't discovered anything yet.

History

Castle in the Sky

Since Aer was young, they've had a fascination with the metadimension and the secrets it holds. It wasn't until they were already studying to be a metaphysicist that they decided they wanted to work for the Protectorate. Like many on Mithorous, the birthplace of the Protectorate, they feel responsible for the alliance's survival. Such a job would not only give them the best access to the latest breakthroughs, but maybe they could use that position to make the Protectorate live up to its promises again.   They got their wish and were hired into the Metadimensional Mapmaking Division straight out of college, joining their close friend on board the Pyxis. The MMD's work involves launching drones into the metadimension and analyzing the data that results. Mostly they only confirm the stability of known metadimensional pathways, but there's always a chance of finding a new pathway, or even a new stellar system.

Winds of Change

As of 3229, Aer's work got a lot more interesting. They received mysterious data, which a telepathic infiltrator from the Syndicate promptly stole most of. Between its strange arrival, the Syndicate's interest, and the possibility the data reveals something new about the metadimension, Aer's top priority has become analyzing what remains to find answer to every question it's spawned.   The quest to analyze this data has seen Aer and half their department relocate from the Pyxis to Gemini Station. Using advanced sensor drones on loan from a co-owner of Little Tow, they're working to fill in the blanks left by the Syndicate's theft. Devoting themself to the work is all that's stopping Aer from worrying about what will happen with the secrets they might reveal.   This could be their best chance to change the Protectorate for the better, and all they can do is hope they'll know how when the time comes.

Trivia

There's often at least one thing wrong with Aer's uniform, whether it's a missing button or a wrinkled collar.

Connections

Aer isn't the best at socializing. Big crowds and loud music stress them, and they've never understood the appeal of the social gatherings others seem to love. When put into those situations, they can come across as blunt, impatient, aloof, and even rude. When not under pressure to be social, their passionate, curious, and kind nature shines through more.   Their few friends tend to be those who naturally accommodate others' boundaries, and can cement their friendship through sheer force of extraversion. These are the sort of people who brush aside the occasional social misstep and value the person underneath.
Farah
Aer's college friend, Farah is now their roommate on board the Pyxis. Though Farah works in HR, she shares Aer's hope to make the Protectorate, and galaxy, better.
Gayle
Aer has nothing nice to say about the Syndicate infiltrator. They also have nothing to say about regular encrypted correspondences. It's only to keep tabs on their rival, nothing more.
Little Tow
Aer has a working relationship with the towing agency that lets them access advanced metadimensional sensor drones. Maybe one day Aer will even admit they're friends.
MMD
Aer hasn't been the best "team player", but they've learned the cost of going solo. Their manager Steffen is helping them and the rest of the department better work together.

Aer sounds like an interesting person. The section about their relationship with Gayle made me laugh, as did the trivia.

"I won't let the Syndicate get credit for our discovery" / "You haven't discovered anything yet." is such a good hook for this character. I'm eager to learn more about Gayle and the mystery data

I just think you're neat!   Check out SanZera or support me on Ko-Fi!
