Perimeter Agency

wow that's a lot of stars is a sci-fi setting about adventure, exploration, and discovery. Every person, place, and thing has a story to tell, if you listen closely.   Setting Intro | Visitor's Guide | Author's Intentions
Much like its original namesake from the Terran Mandate, Perimeter Agency exists to counter maltech. According to the Protectorate, most of Perimeter’s work is exploratory, and only involves forceful action if no other course of action is left available.

Maltech

Perimeter has adopted the same prohibitions from the Nihil Ultra, though has adopted plainer speech to convey the concepts. The three areas of maltech the Agency seeks to destroy include:
  • Eugenics.
  • Unbraked AI.
  • Weapons of planetary destruction.
The Perimeter emblem is meant to represent these three categories of maltech and those who seek to keep them confined.

Involvement

Perimeter’s existence became public just recently, and much of their history and operating procedures still remain a secret. The Protectorate has only recently admitted to the Perimeter Agency’s existence and goals, indicating they created the anti-maltech group in the wake of the Emerald Legion incursion. However, there thus far has been no acknowledgment on specific Perimeter actions.   The events listed below are believed to be related to Perimeter, but neither Perimeter nor the Protectorate has officially claimed responsibility for any. The most convincing evidence is typically the presence of those in what’s now known as the Perimeter uniform.

Mithorous

A development group on Mithorous created a memory-recording software, designed to run on modified ghosttalkers. As the product was nearing prototyping stage, people in what’s now known as Perimeter Agency uniforms were seen in meetings with executives.   Soon after, the company announced delays, then bankruptcy and the product never reached completion.   Though uncomfirmed, the belief is that Perimeter shut the organization down. Rumors as to why vary: security lacked such that anyone could view recorded memories; the technology was built on that of the Emerald Legion; even that the founder was a Legionnaire himself.   (For more details, see the article on Memcast.)

Nisora

The most recent and egregious act occurred in orbit around Nisora, where two Perimeter agents killed every inhabitant of a research station. This was made public with photographic evidence by Jorie Grey of the Galean Gazette. It’s believed her article is what pushed the Protectorate to announce the Agency’s existence.   The official response to this event is that Perimeter Agents would only use lethal force if under imminent, deathly threat and no other recourse is available. However, the photos showed only unarmed researchers.   The event is under Protectorate review for wrongdoing, but there’s little expectation of transparency. Many have come to their own conclusions. For some, it’s a massacre proving Perimeter to be power-hungry and blood-thirsty. Others believe Perimeter saved the planet from a threat housed on the station, and their silence is to prevent panic.

Other rumors

Since their existence became known, many have come forward with what they believe is evidence of Perimeter action. In most cases, it’s a remote facility that suddenly became vacant, or a tech company that unexpectedly flopped.   While both organizations keep the truth hidden, the populace remains divided on whether Perimeter is a tyrant willfully destroying lives or as an unsung hero silently saving the world.
