History

The Emerald Legion is a covert and enigmatic organization from an unknown system. They first entered the public consciousness twenty years ago, following a cryptic warning sent to most major news outlets.   Those that heeded the warning found truth to its accusations. Members of leadership in government, police, militaries, even school boards were found to be spies for the Legion, whether willingly or not. Some were Legionnaires themselves.   Their standard operation is subtle. They bribe, blackmail, infiltrate, and sometimes implant a version of ghost-talker than can surveil and control the body it inhabits. In most cases, the owner has no knowledge of this implant or what it can do.   On Astronius, they targeted the planet’s wealth of pretech and the colony ship now used by the Astronius Collective. On Rada, where they still have control, they harvest materials from local psionic creatures to enhance their own psionic abilities.   The most egregious infiltration comes from Talmar, which hadn’t yet been uplifted at the time. Three Legion battleships and a fleet cruiser dropped soldiers and mechs onto the planet, threatening to decimate the small TL2 population.   Planetary forces used a pre-human missile to destroy the ships, preventing the Legion from gaining a strong foothold in the sector. Had the Legion gained control over the planet and the missile, they’d be in a much stronger position to take over the sector.   Without that control, and without their flagship, their members have scattered to independent cells. Their impact isn’t yet negligible, but has been much reduced.

Technology

Many aspects of the Emerald Legion set them apart. They have their own language and hierarchy, are often powerful psions, tend to prefer having their faces covered, and can often be seen wearing their namesake green armor.   The most notable difference is their superior technology. Its capabilities are closer to pretech and psitech, but its architecture is too different to be used with our existing infrastructure.   The Syndicate has shared a wealth of knowledge about this technology, which has saved countless lives from the invasive implants. That knowledge and what Legion tech the Syndicate might sell has fueled research groups racing to see who first can integrate Legion tech with our own, accelerating our journey toward buildable psitech.

Today

The Legion mostly exists in small pocket groups today. The destruction of their flagship halted many of their larger plans, especially combined with the warnings and efforts from other groups since.   In addition to the Syndicate, another anti-Legion group known as the Night Knights has surfaced. They’re a small group specialized in tracking and eliminating Legion cells. They employ experts in Legion programming, and are often found collaborating with the Syndicate and mercenary groups like the Unchained Armada.   Being from Talmar, the Armada also has an anti-Legion tilt, and offers discounts on work that targets Legion operations.   Not all Legion remnants are antagonistic. Due to the Legion’s tactics, many employed within had no knowledge of what they were contributing to, or otherwise had no choice to participate.   Many of these refugees now help research efforts, lending their expertise of Legion tech, psionics, and more. Talmar has become a common refuge for these defectors, where one former Legionnaire in particular has been leading rehabilitation efforts.
