Abraia

wow that's a lot of stars is a sci-fi setting about adventure, exploration, and discovery. Every person, place, and thing has a story to tell, if you listen closely.   Setting Intro | Visitor's Guide | Author's Intentions
Abraia is the original colony settled on Devali expanded into a parliamentary democracy that covers near a third of the planet. Today, the country is known for its carefully-sculpted gardens and how much effort put in to hiding the ugly parts.

Culture

Devalian culture across the planet heavily involves the local plant life. For Abraia, this culture is focused on containment and control in favor of aesthetics. Buildings and roads are made with materials designed to keep plant life out. Trees are kept away from infrastructure, all gardens are well-tended, and billions are spent every year to tame and maintain the flora that would otherwise overrun the area.   Organizations like Vantas Company have turned this culture into a business, selling art, clothes, and products designed to enhance the Abraian way of life. Idorea Nassus was famous for her fashions that incorporated living flowers, and Vantas Vohn has trademarked the native Devalian soil as Mirasoil in order to sell it to other planets.   Being a gardener in Abraia is a lucrative, if dangerous, career. Many make names for themselves by servicing a particular theme, though many struggle to bring their art to other planets where the plants aren't as hardy. None have become as broadly-known as Brian Evers, whose gardens and art installations are steeped in the macabre. He exclusively deals in plants with thorns, poisons, or other unsettling aspects.

Controversy

Abraia has repeatedly come under fire for their actions during the Monhalian War of Independence, and for the Razing in particular. The Protectorate's official response is that they don't get involved with planetary conflicts. With the newly-formed Perimeter Agency, many thought there would be renewed investigations despite the intervening thirty years, but Perimeter has concluded no maltech was used in the Razing, and thus the conflict is beyond their purview.   Many Monhalians still alive lost friends and family to the event and continue to demand reparations from Abraia. No current member of Abraia's parliament was MP during the war, but they still refuse to even publicly admit wrongdoing. This is despite many members of the Abraian public being vocally pro-reparations, including high-profile citizens like Brian Evers. Some demand the return of the city of Monhal to the Monhalian Union despite its current ruined state. The subject of the Razing has even been banned at various political debate and Q&A sessions.
