Aethercite Catalogue

Article Contents

AUTHOR'S NOTE: Definitely splitting into smaller articles...
Aethercite is a term for any object that can store Aether. Generally the term is reserved crystals and rocks, though some materials like leather can also be classified as an Aethercite. Every single different type of Aethercite will interact with Mana and aether in a slightly different way. The following catalogue below is meant to be an exhaustive, but by no means complete, listing of every known type of Aethercite and how it interacts with Mana and how it interacts with Aether.

How to Read this catalogue

NAME

Description: A short two to three sentence description of the material.

M-Charge: Interaction when the material is charged with Mana.

A-Charge: Ineraction when the material is charged with Aether.

A-Saturation: What happens to the object when aetheric saturation is reached, the point where it can no longer store excess aether. There is no Mana-saturation point with exceptions (such as Lithium). Excess mana almost always bleeds off as heat and some form of light.

Common uses: What the people of Vreathe actually use the material for.

Locations Found: Common locations across Vreathe (mainly Cassel) where the material can be found.
Price Per gram, kilogram, ton, or carat.

Type: Whether it's a rock, gem, etc.

Composition: (If practical to display)

Density: in Grams per cm3

Color: Color of aethercite.

Fluorescence: Color material glows under UV light OR when charged with mana.

(If any color changes occur when charged with Aether, then it will be in A-charge description.)

Beryl - Goshenite

Description: Beryls are a common type of silicate with significant amounts of Beryllium content. Goshenite, also called Clear Beryl, is a variety of beryl that is completely colorless. It is a Beryl in its purest form.

M-Charge: No interaction with Mana. Beryllium's properties completely override the properties of the other elements.

A-Charge: Aether (normally) treats Beryls as if it doesn't exist. Aetheric energy will (normally) just pass right through.

A-Saturation: At very high concentrations of Aether, goshenite will turn black, and will start actviely destroying light particles within a small field.
Price: 5 beryls per carat.

Type: mineral.

Composition: Be3Al2Si6O18

Density: 2.7g/cm3

Color: Crysal Clear

Fluorescence: -none-

Common uses: Goshenite is shaped into a type of glass used for Mana Detectors. It is also used on some of Cassel's official currency: Beryls.

Locations Found: Goshenite is extremely common across the Kingdoms of Cassel, especially the Valley of Kings, both the Elven Kingdoms, the Icenae mountains, and the mountains surrounding the Sands of Nessa.

Beryl - Colored

Description: Colored Beryls are beryls with slight chemical impurites which results in their coloration. These colors can sometimes be minor but are also sometimes quite striking in appearance.

M-Charge: Unlike Goshenite, colored beryls can store mana in quite large amounts. Depending on the type of beryl, there is an affinity for certain mana transformations when the mana is channeled by a spellcaster.

A-Charge: No interaction. Because of this, colored beryls are not considered to be aethercite.

A-Saturation: At very high concentrations of Aether, Beryls will invert their colors, but otherwise have no notable interaction.
Price: 125 beryls per carat.

Type: mineral.

Composition: Be3Al2Si6O18

Density: 2.7g/cm3

Color: Varies

Fluorescence: Usually none. Red beryls will give off violet light.

Common uses: Beryls are all commonly used as Mana Stones of some kind. Mages with specific elemental specialities will carry specific types of beryls to increase their abilities even further. Other mages will carry beryls matching the elements they are weak at, making them more well rounded spellcasters.

Locations Found: Beryls are quite common in the Mountains of Cil, the Golden Towers, the Cliffs of Nikria, as well as the highlands of both Lyonne and Ledo.

Variations

Emerald - Colored green due to chromium impurity. Emeralds make it easier to cast Air and Lightning Magic.

Aquamarine - Colored blue due to Iron impurity. Aquamarines make it easier to cast Water and Ice Magic.

Heliodor - Colored yellow due to iron and uranium impurities. Heliodors make it easier to case Fire and Earth Magic.

Red Beryls - Colored red due to manganese impurities. One of the few gemstones to strengthen Life and Death Magic.

Bloodstone

Description: Also called Heliotrope, Bloodstone is a type of Chalcedony with red inclusions of Hematite, a crystalized iron oxide. This gives it the appearance of a green stone with splattered blood. As Hematite is useful for blood magic, so is Bloodstone. This rock is often used by vampires as a seed to grow what is known as a True Bloodstone.

M-Charge: Being a silicate, Bloodstone can store mana in large quantities without much issue. The hematite inclusions will gradually grow more transparent and glow red. Mana has an affinity for Life Magic.

A-Charge: Projects a healing aura. Healing aura will get stronger with higher levels of aether. Care should be taken to not use this as a healing stone when charged with too much aether.

A-Saturation: At saturation, this stone will attract blood to it, specifically human blood. It will make humans near it feel very uneasy due to this attraction, to the point they start bleeding out of their skin's pores, their eyes, their nose, and more places. Human blood that contacts a Bloodstone will crystalize and start to grow. When these crystals grow large enough, the entire structure will collapse into a perfect spherical gem known as a True Bloodstone
Price: 1 beryl per 100 grams.

Type: oxide mineral.

Composition: SiO2

Density: 2.61g/cm3

Color: Green with bloody red spots

Fluorescence: -none-

Common uses: Bloodstones are commonly used by healers as the mana affinity is great for healing magic and when charged with aether it projects a healing aura. Aside from this, vampires have in the past taken especially large bloodstones and sacrificed humans to try to create a true bloodstone, but it requires many thousands of sacrifices before it is made. A True Bloodstone has only been made once, but it was destroyed.

Locations Found: Bloodstones are found all over Cassel, especially in the Ledo Highlands, the Western plains and mountains of the Duchy of Fairden, the Pearl Desert, and the Rojazul plains.

Diamond

Description: Diamonds are similar to Quartz in that it can store large amounts of mana, but there are several major differences. First, Diamonds can store mana and aether forever and will never lose its charge. Second, Diamonds store Mana and Aether at a rate 100 times greater than that of Quartz. a 1 carat quartz can store 0.2 Mana Point and will lose this charge after roughly a year, while a 1 carat diamond can store 20MP and keep the charge forever. Saturated diamonds store even more mana, making a 1 carat diamond able to store 200MP.

M-Charge: Diamonds double magical affinity with every type of Elemental Magic and Esoteric Magic. It can also increase affinity for the few who can use Time Magic. Colored varieties increase affinities for specific elements even further.

A-Charge: Diamonds don't have an interaction with Aether. It just simply stores it in large amounts and never loses a charge. Aether can normally be drawn from a crystal and used for magic, but it is difficult with larger diamonds, as if the aether wants to stay locked away forever.

A-Saturation: At saturation, mana storage increases ten-fold. Additional incoming aether is converted into mana.
Price: 5,000 beryls per carat.

Type: native mineral.

Composition: C

Density: 3.5g/cm3

Color: Crysal Clear

Fluorescence: Blue

Common uses: Diamonds are used by mages to drastically increase mana for spellcasting, but they are unbelievably expensive. In terms of mana storage efficiency, Quartz crystals are technically better if aether saturation is ignored, but you need to carry significantly more.

Locations Found: Diamonds are rarely found in the Islands of Rosika, but are otherwise quite rare across Cassel and are imported from the Continent of Tensen. The Elves of Ledo and Lyonne have large numbers of diamonds, but it is unknown how they came across so many. There is also a lava lake in the Boiling Islands that rarely produces them, but getting them is quite dangerous.

Variations

Red - Very rare type of diamond that increases affinity for fire magic by 10 times.

Orange - Increases affinity for Gravity and Magnetic magic by 5 times each.

Blue - Increases affinity for Water and Ice magic by 5 times each.

Yellow - Increases affinity for lightning and air magic by 5 times each.

Brown - Increases affinity for Earth and metal magic by 5 times each.

White - Not to be confused with a colorless diamond. Increases affinity for healing magic by 10 times.

Black - Gemstone quality version of Carbonado. This diamond is completely opaque. Increases affinity for death magic by 10 times.

Carbonado - Rough polycrystalline carbon that black diamonds are found in. All black diamonds and Carbonado's known on Vreathe came from several scales of the Dragon Lord, Matan the Infinite, that crashed into the ground during the Sivler Age.

Ice

Description: Ice is the frozen crystalized form of Water, which is composed of Hydrogen and Oxygen. Ice generally freezes at 0°C.

M-Charge: Normal water doesn't interact with mana. Heavy water, and therefore Heavy Ice, will store mana, but only for a few weeks.

A-Charge: Regardless of the type of ice, it will stay frozen, and destroy surrounding heat until it loses its aether charge. Low levels of aether will not decrease the temperature of the Ice, but higher levels will gradually lower the temperature of the ice until it reaches saturation.

A-Saturation: At saturation, the ice will expel all of its stored aether in a chilling wave of energy, lowering the temperature of all objects by as much as 30°C. Living things will resist this energy wave due to the presence of mana in their bodies, but internal body temperatures will still drop as much as 5°C. Humans lacking a Mana Lung will drop much further and will go into shock.
Price: Water's Free! (Natural Aethercite Ice can cost up to 100 beryls per kilogram)

Type: Mineral.

Composition: H2O (Normal)
D2O (Heavy)

Density: 0.9g/cm3 (Normal)
1.1g/cm3 (Heavy Ice)

Color: perfectly clear. Very thick ice is sometimes faintly blue.

Fluorescence: -none-

Common uses: Ice is used to keep objects, especially liquids, cooler. Aethercite Ice allows the use of the same block of ice for a much longer period of time, possibly even forever, as long as the object is kept charged with aether.

Locations Found: Ice is found anywhere the temperature drops below freezing (0°C / 32°F). Naturally occuring Aethercite Ice is found at the tops of isolated peaks and in Nivema's Sorrow, a giant glacier sitting in the ocean southeast of the Aelurus Islands.

Jade ( Jadeite )

Description: Jade is a dense silicate material composed of Sodium, Aluminum, Silicon, and Oxygen. There are many varieties of jade with a variety of different colors. They all share a common effect when charged with mana and aether, and each have an additional effect when charged with aether.

M-Charge: Being a silicate, jade is able to store mana without losing its charge over time. Higher mana levels also make jade gradually more translucent.

A-Charge: Aether causesjade to project a healing aura. The distance and strength of this aura depends on the aether charge.

A-Saturation: At saturation, the jade will lose all of its color, turning white, and project a field of healing magic up to 10 meters away depending on the size of the piece. This aura lasts for up to five minutes and can instantly heal most minor injuries.
Price: 10,000 beryls per kilogram.

Type: Pyroxene Mineral.

Composition: NaAlSi2O6

Density: 3.3g/cm3

Color: Light to Deep Green. Can also be white, blue or purple.

Fluorescence: glows the same as natural color.

Common uses: Jade is used by civilizations in the the dark lands and on the continent of Tensen for sculptures and jewelry. Jade is also cut into arrow heads and used for Mana Seeking Arrows.

Locations Found: Green Jade is commonly found in the Dark lands and the continent of Tensen. Blue Jade is exclusively found in the Dark Lands. Purple jade is found in Alluth.

Variations

Green Jade - said to have a more effective healing aura than other varieties.

Blue Jade - has a much larger healing aura than other varieties. Healing aura caused by aetheric saturation can reach up to 20 meters away.

Alluthian Purple Jade - projects a small field of Death Magic that is attuned to microbial life. this makes purple jade excellent for ridding the body of diseases.

Pink Jade - healing aura also has the effect of calming the emotions of anyone caught inside the area of effect.

Red Jade - healing aura has the opposite effect of Pink Jade and instead strengthens emotions. Warriors in Tensen often carry a piece with them into battle to increase their resolve and determination.

Jade ( White Jade )

Description: (See Jade)

M-Charge: (See Jade).

A-Charge: Aether turns white jade almost magnetic, but instead of being attracted to certain metals, it is attracted to mana. High aether levels will cause the jade to rapidly travel in the direction of the strongest mana signal up to the speed of sound. Unlike colored varieties of jade, white jade has no healing properties.

A-Saturation: At saturation, whitejade will violently explode, vaporizing the sodium and aluminum while the silicates collapse into quartz.
Price: 1000 beryls per kilogram.

Type: Pyroxene Mineral.

Composition: NaAlSi2O6

Density: 3.3g/cm3

Color: White.

Fluorescence: Glows white

Common uses: White jade has the same uses as colored jade does for jewelry and sculptures. White jade is also cut into arrow heads and used for Mana Seeking Arrows.

Locations Found: White jade can be found in a variety of locations, but is primarily the byproduct of colored varieties of jade reaching aetheric saturation.

Moissanite

Description: Moissanite Crystals are super tough gemstones, generally understood on Vreathe to be second only to diamond in hardness. All moissanite crystals seem to be charged with aether in some way and all have stored memories of the dragon lord, Loralkas, the Pulsar.

M-Charge: Moissanite will harmlessly absorb any hostile magic attack coming at it. Physical attacks will be dispelled as harmless light and a little bit of heat energy.

A-Charge: moissanite can store memories in almost perfect detail with the use of aether. They are sometimes referred to as Memory crystals or Lore Crystals. Charging moissante with mana will allow you to view the memory within for a brief moment.

A-Saturation: Passively converts excess aether into Mana. This mana (as well as the mana absorbed from attacks) can then be used by the person holding/wearing the moissanite.
Price: 10,000 beryls per 500 carats.

Type: Mineral.

Composition: SiC

Density: 3.2g/cm3

Color: Normally Dark and Colorless. Any amount of Mana or Aether makes it very dark violet to black in color.

Fluorescence: faintly glows.

Common uses: Commonly used as jewelry. It cannot be used as a mana detector because there is almost always mana or aether somewhere, preventing the true color of the crystal be shown. Most commonly used to make Void Armor by the Knights of the Abyss. May have possibly been used to animate golems.

Locations Found: Found only within the Loralkas Crater, an impact crater created by a long dead dragon lord in the Mountains of Cil.

Opal (Common)

Description: Common opal is a partially translucent silicate with a large volume of water. There are a large variety of colors and types, though nearly all common opals have the same effect. Opals will readily absorb aether at a rate dozens of times faster than most other minerals, especially when it is placed in contact with a living thing.

M-Charge: Opal does not store mana as well as other silicates due to the presence of water.

A-Charge: Opal will rapidly increase in size. The amount is dependient on the opal charge. Saturation is reached when the opal is roughly twice its original size. Common Opal is able to cleanse the aether it absorbs of any intent, which means it can neutralize godly aether and dragon corruption.

A-Saturation: Like many silicate minerals, Opal will collapse into Quartz when aetheric saturation is reached. Water is flashed to steam and explodes outwards at a very high rate of speed. Oddly, saturation is only reached under certain conditions, such as being inside of a living thing.
Price: 75 beryls per 100 grams

Type: Mineraloid

Composition: SiO2 - H2O

Density: 2.09 g/cm3

Color: Varies

Fluorescence: Usually green

Common uses: Common opals are cut in multiple ways (either ground into grain sized particles or roughly cut into 5cm3 blocks), which are then used to collect naturally occuring Aether. This aether is then channeled into quartz crystals for long term storage. Large opals can also be cut into Opal Arrows, usually for hunting animals, but there is also some military use as well.

Locations Found: Common opals can be found in hilly areas in the Ledon Frontier Lands due to hydrothermal activity, They can also be found in the Sands of Nessa, as well as many locations across the Xiral Islands and the Boiling Islands.

Quartz (Clear)

Description: Clear Quartz, also called Rock Crystal, is considered to be one of the most pure crystals on Vreathe, at least from a spell casting standpoint. Nearly all varieties of aethercite have a property called aetheric intent. This intent was put in place by the gods that created these objects, which determines the mana and aether properties when charged. Quartz does not. This means that mana and aether have no additional effect when charging quartz. Quartz is a Battery in the strictest sense, able to store large quantities of magic and be stable while doing so. It is not the most efficient at either but that hardly matters for the vast majority of people on Vreathe.

M-Charge: Stores Mana in great quantities. Clear quartz will give off a soft light if it is fully charged with mana. Clear quartz has no mana affinity and will not make any type of magic easier or harder to cast.

A-Charge: Stores Aether in great quantities. Clear quartz will turn milky when lightly charged and will turn fully white when the charge is full.

A-Saturation: The defining characteristic of Quartz is not that it is an effective battery, but that there is no effect with aetheric saturation is reached. When it can store no more aether, it simply stops storing more.
Price: 50 beryl per 10 carats.

Type: oxide mineral.

Composition: SiO2

Density: 2.65g/cm3

Color: Crysal Clear

Fluorescence: -none-

Mana Point: Quartz is the standard for the measure of MP. 1 gram of quartz can store 1 MP for one year without losing its charge.

Common uses: Clear Quartz is mined and used for mana and aether storage. Spellcasters often cut them into 100 carat chunks and wear large bracelets with up to 10 crystals. This gives a mage access to up to 200 additional MP, tripling the spellcasting ability of the average Iron Human. A very large variety of variations exist for mana storage on the body.

Locations Found: Clear Quartz is extremely common across Vreathe. Especially large crystals can be found in the Mountains of Cil, the Red Towers, The Boiling Islands, Caverns below Mount Rakkos, and on the Island of Rosika.

Variations

Milky Quartz - Clear quartz with small fluid inclusions, giving it a translucent to opaque white appearance. This variety of quarts is quite common on some worlds but is extraordinarily rare on Vreathe. It reaches aetheric saturation easily, where it will then boil off the fluid inclusions and turn into clear quartz.

Smoky Quartz - Clear quartz that has absorbed corrupted aether, either from the gods or from dragon corruption. It has a grayish to black appearance. It actively corrupts other aether it gets charged with. When this quartz is fully charged it is opaque and black. The light it gives off inverts the colors of whatever it touches. Corrupted aether can be...chaotic and random, but it allows the casting of very powerful spells.

Quartz (Amethyst)

Description: Amethyst is a variety of Quartz that can be a soft lavender to a deep purple color and has traces of iron that causes the color.

M-Charge: Stores Mana in great quantities. Amethyst has an affinity for healing magic, making it stronger and easier to cast. Glows a pale violet when it reaches maximum charge.

A-Charge: Stores Aether in great quantities. Slowly turns darker with higher levels of Aether, appearing as dark as midnight when fully charged.

A-Saturation: An amethyst crystal has a hidden use to those that know it. At saturation, charging it with more aether will instead convert that aether into an aura that defracts light, turning people and objects inside that aura mostly invisible for as long as aetheric saturation can be maintained. This is especially effective at night.
Price: 100 beryl per 10 carats.

Type: oxide mineral.

Composition: SiO2

Density: 2.65g/cm3

Color: Lavender to Purple

Fluorescence: -none-

Common uses: Amethyst is most commonly used as healing crystals and it has been used on Vreathe for thousands of years for this purpose. Thieves have used fully charged amethyst crystals to hide in plain sight.

Locations Found: Amethyst crystals are found in very large amounts in the Island of Rosika. They are found in much smaller amounts in the Ash Mountains, the Califons Hills, and the Nikria Cliffs.

Additional Info: The Halfling Thief Ametista got her nickname from this crystal. She uses these crystals along with her small size to easily hide and get out of almost any situation.

Variations

Amethyst Quartz - This crystal has small banded areas where it is completely colorless. These areas are chemically pure clear quartz. The properties of the amethyst overrides the pure quartz so the crystal is still useful for those with affinities to healing magic. However it does not refract light at saturation.

Brown Amethyst - Amethyst will change colors when out in the sun for too long. It will also change colors if it stays oversaturated with aether for too long. This crystal has the exact same properties as regular amethyst otherwise but its ability to defract light and turn objects invisible is lost.

Pink Amethyst - Very rare variety of quartz known from the dark lands. Only two examples were ever found in Cassel. Pink amethyst turns opaque and projects a healing aura when charged with aether. Due to the storage properties of Quartz, it can store aether and project a healing aura for much longer than Jade can, and is immune to being destroyed from aetheric saturation.

Quartz (Citrine)

Description: Known on Vreathe as Transmutation Stone, Citrine is a rare yellow quartz gem with an iron hydroxide impurity. It is not found in Cassel with a few exceptions. It is sometimes used for metal working, but has another use...

M-Charge: Citrine has an affinity for metal magic, making it easy to manipulate metals with magic. Glows a pale yellow when it reaches maximum charge.

A-Charge: Slowly turns more opaque and darker with higher levels of Aether. Charging Citrine with aether is heavily discouraged. Some people have reported a metallic orange taste after casting magic with a piece of aether charged citrine, though most people claim this to be untrue.

A-Saturation: Citrine will project an aura a few meters across. This aura spontaneously turns living tissue into a random type of metal. There is no effect at all if the living thing is inside the aura for less than 60 seconds but after that, the chances increase dramatically. After prolonged periods of time, a living thing can turn entirely into metal. Citrine itself will degrade into Clear Quartz if left at saturation for too long.
Price: 1000 beryl per 10 carats.

Type: oxide mineral.

Composition: SiO2

Density: 2.65g/cm3

Color: Yellow to Orange

Fluorescence: -none-

Common uses: In the criminal underworld, the gem is rarely used to assassinate targets. This conversion process is extremely painful and will cause the target to move out of the aura, so assassins need to find a way to keep the target incapacitated, usually using some sort of item that causes paralysis. Fully converting a human target into a mass of metal alloys takes around 6 hours.

Locations Found: A few crystals have been found on the Island of Rosika. Otherwise, these crystals come from the Dark Lands across the ocean, or from the nation of Pellensk far to the west of Cassel.

Variations

Ametrine - Amethyst with a band of Citrine running through it. The properties of this quartz is said to be entirely different than either gem, but due to its rarity, these effects are not known inside the Kingdoms of Cassel.

Sapphire (Blue)

Description: Sapphires are a gemstone version of the mineral Corundum. They are a transparent to translucent blue crystal that can sometimes appear more green or purple under various lighting conditions. Sapphires contain small traces of titanium. Due to the presence of Iron, Sapphires can strengthen blood magic compared to Rubies, but the effect is negligible.

M-Charge: Sapphires have an affinity for Water, Ice, and Air Magic. Water magic is strongest, and is 6 times stronger when cast with a sapphire, while Ice ane Air magic is only 3 times stronger.

A-Charge: Similar to a Ruby, aether will make a sapphire darker until it is almost opaque and black, but still noticeably blue. Aether charged sapphires will change their glow to blue.

A-Saturation: As long as aetheric saturation is maintained, Sapphires will start to rapidly cool down and generate an air current as well as small water droplets. A saturated sapphire can be used to generate a beam of light that can freeze almost anything it touches, but will drain the gem of its aether.

Price: 750 beryls per carat.

Type: mineral.

Composition: Al2O3

Density: 4 g/cm3

Color: blue

Fluorescence: -none- Oddly glows red sometimes.

Common uses: Sapphires are used by mages to strengthen multiple magical elements, especially Water. Orcs on the floating Kingdom of Viricrul Have weapons known as Frost Rifles that they use to freeze living things solid.

Locations Found: Sapphires are found in the Island of Rosika, and can rarely be found in the Ash Mountains and Cliffs of Nikria, but otherwise they are mainly found far to the west on the continent of Tensen.

Variations

Yellow Sapphire: Yellow sapphires have a trace iron content. They have an affinity for lightning, magnet, and metal magics, strengthening each by up to two times. When charged with aether, yellow sapphires will give off a yellowish glow but otherwise will not fluoresce. At aetheric saturation, yellow sapphires generate a field of static electricity and start to give off sparks. It can be used to generate and guide a lightning bolt's worth of energy at a target, but afterwards the gem is completely drained of aether.

Green Sapphire: Green sapphires have a high iron content, but lack the titanium that makes sapphires blue. They can appear anywhere from a light yellowish green to a deep leafy color (called Leaf Sapphires on Vreathe). These actually produce two completely different effects at aetheric saturation but have the same elemental affinities when charged with mana. Green sapphires stengthen Earth, Water, and Air magic by up to two times. When charged with aether, both types of green sapphires will give off a greenish glow but otherwise will not fluoresce. At aetheric saturation, the gem becomes noticeably heavier while generating an air current and water droplets. It can be used to create a great pulse of wind energy with enough force to knock over people. Is used inside an enclosed room, the effect can be explosive.

Leaf Sapphire: At aetheric saturation, leaf sapphires will start to feel noticeably light. It can be used to generate a large field of what is said to be Life Magic, but it only affects plants, causing the plant to rapidly grow, equivalent to several months of growth. It will also paradoxically make them ignore some biological processes and bear seeds and fruits.

Orange Sapphire: Orange sapphires have traces of both chromium and iron, the amount determines how deep the color is and whether the gem is more red or yellow in color. Orange Sapphires strangely don't have an affinity for any type of mana. When charged with aether, they will not glow until they reach sautration. When this happens, they glow a bright orange and generate a small field of light that inverts colors. This field of light also completely disables all other forms of magic, making for an extremely effective shield. The gem can be used to create a pulse of energy that stops all living things in a 10 meter radius from being able to cast magic for up to an hour. This effect was written about in the Silver Age and was used to even stop Gods and Dragon Lords from casting magic for a short time. Fortunately for beings this powerful the effects last a much shorter amount of time on them.

Black Sapphire: Black sapphires have a very high iron and titanium content, and appear from a translucent dark grey to almost black. They have an dffinity for Life and Death Magic. When charged with aether, black sapphires do not glow, they get even darker and absorb all light, appearing like a hole in reality. At aetheric saturation, it generates a field that makes living things feal uneasy and in a state of dread. a pulse can be created with this gem that temporarily "kills" all living things caught entirely within its radius, draining the black sapphire of all of its aether. This death that living things experience is actually their soul being temporarily being ripped out of their bodies.

Sodalite

Description: Sodalite is a fragile opaque mineral with a deep royal blue color, intersected with white lines. It is most well-known in Cassel for its ability to give off light when charged with mana. Gemstone quality Sodalite has different properties.

M-Charge: When charged with mana, sodalite will glow with orange specks. At higher levels of mana, the sodalite will be more covered in orange light until at maximum saturation the entire stone is glowing orange, and is glowing bright enough to cause discomfort if stared at for too long. Sodalite does not hold a mana charge for long, only around four hours.

A-Charge: Sodalite will start to give off heat. The amount of heat is dependent on the aether charge but it is not very much. At maximum charge it is just enough to burn the skin after a short exposure.

A-Saturation: When Sodalite reaches saturation, it expels all aether in a bright flash of orange light, blinding anyone for up to five minutes. The Sodalite then reforms into a transparent crystalized version.
Price: 100 beryls per kilogram

Type: Tectosilicate

Composition: Na8(Al6Si6O24)Cl2

Density: 2.3 g/cm3

Color: blue with white inersecting lines

Fluorescence: bright orange patches

Common uses: Sodalite is used in street lamps and in indoor lighting, at least in human cities. Usually, all the lamps in the city are connected with copper wire and are turned on at night by flipping a switch, connecting the lamps to a Mana Battery. In smaller towns, a person known as a Mage Lighter will go around and manually charge all the lamps.

Locations Found: Sodalite is found in very large quantities in the Elf-Kingdom of Ledo. It can be found in smaller amounts in the Ledon Frontier Lands, around the Boiling and Xiral Islands, the Island of Rosika, and the Pearl Desert. Only blue Sodalite is found in Cassel while Ledo has several varieties.

Variations

Gemstone Sodalite - Translucent to transparent blue crystal. This will still glow orange when charged with mana. When charged with Aether, these gems will start to decrease in temperature. These gems are said to reach so far below freezing they hit absolute zero long before they reach saturation. There is no known interaction when aetheric saturation is reached.

Hackmanite - This white mineral will change to a violet color when charged with mana or left in the sun, then slowly change back to its original color after a period of time. When charged with aether, the mineral glows faintly in whatever color it is at the moment. The Elves of Ledo have elaborate clocks made with these minerals.

Scale of Senget

Description: Senget the Wellspring is a long dead Dragon Lord who has absolute control over water. She was killed during the Silver Age and before she was cast into the crushing depths of Tarsuros, she was completely stripped of her scales. These scales are large blue crystalline structures, around 3 meters across. There is debate over the exact structure of these scales, with some scholars saying they are made of Azurite, with others saying its made of Lazulite. What her scales are made of hardly matters, as they don't act like any known mineral. These scales also function as Lore Crystals as every scale has some of Senget's memories within.

M-Charge: Mana is immediately converted into pure water. Since mana exists everywhere in small amounts, Senget's scales are always and forever producing roughly 10,000 gallons of water per day each. Higher levels of mana will cause the scales to produce more water.

A-Charge: Senget's scales are already charged with Aether with her original intent behind it. Charging the scales with mana will allow you to view the memory within before that mana is converted into water. Removing Aether from Senget's scales will cause them to crumble to silicate dust and become useless.

A-Saturation: Aetheric saturation has never been reached with these scales no matter how much aether is poured into them.
Price: 10,500,000 beryls each

Type: -Unknown-

Composition: -Unknown-

Density: 3.75 g/cm3

Color: Light Blue

Fluorescence: Forever glows a pale blue

Common uses: Kept in storage inside of caverns or the bottom of wells and used to produce water. A few scales is more than enough to keep a small town alive in the desert.

Locations Found: There were said to originally be a million scales of Senget, producing over a hundred billion gallons of water every day. The current number is unknown but many are known to have been destroyed. Many desert settlements across Vreathe has at least one scale.

Additional Info: The City of Wrethilin, sitting atop a tall mesa, has several hundred of the remaining scales. The very ancient Skyfortress Aquarius, sitting underneath that city, is said to have thousands of 'dormant' scales, scales that are not currently charged with any mana.

Topaz

Description: Topaz is an orange colored gemstone that greatly and exclusively enhances lightning magic. This gem was created by Errali based on the description that Vikuon gave her. The result is a gemstone that embodies the qualities of the god of Lightning and the creator of the Sun.

M-Charge: Topaz only has an affinity for lightning magic. It will enhance magic cast with this element by up to ten times. Mana stored in this gem will automatically have an affinity for lightning magic as well, technically increasing power by another few times.

A-Charge: Topaz gives off a soft yellow light when it is charged with Aether. the gem doesn't give off heat but the light still somehow feels warm.

A-Saturation: At saturation, Topaz will rapidly heat up turning into a burning hot plasma. It will float in place where it was left and give off a light bright enough to blind anyone. The gem will stay like this for up to a week.
Price: 854 beryl per 10 carats.

Type: silicate mineral.

Composition: Al2Si,O4(F,OH)2

Density: 3.52g/cm3

Color: Yellow to Orange

Fluorescence: Gold

Gem Forging: Steel forged with Topaz has a slightly orange colored blade. When charged with mana, it will light up and glow. At maximum capacity, it will be almost too bright to look at directly. The steel will also conduct and channel electricity and lightning magic with great efficiency. Common uses: The most common use is to forge steel balls and use them for internal lighting. A wire connects to this metal from a central source. when the circuit is closed, mana runs into the sphere and causes it to glow. This method is quite expensive compared to Sodalite or Fluorite

Blades are sometimes forged with topaz gem steel, and are called Light Blades. These blades can be used to create a very bright light and temporarily blind opponents. The issue is the user of the blade has no immunity against the effect, so it's kind of risky to use.

Locations Found: Topaz is rarely found in the Isalnd of Rosika, as well as the Elf-Kingdom of Ledo. Usually this gem is imported from the Centaurlands.

Variations

there are variations of Topaz that are red, pink, and blue in color. Unlike other gems that change properties with elemental impurities and colors, All alternate varieties of topaz have the exact same effects as normal topaz. they will glow different colors when charged with Aether, but that is about the extent of it. The fighters that do use light blades prefer a blade made of blue topaz as it is almost impossible to tell the difference between the appearance with this and normal steel. It makes a surprise blinding attack easier to execute.

Refined Materials

Salt

Description: There are a variety of compounds made of Chlorine and another element resulting in a type of salt. Sodium Chloride is the most common and is also most commonly referred to as just salt. From an aethercite standpoint, Sodium Chloride has an affinity with Fire Magic and are informally known as Fire Salts on Vreathe when making potions.

M-Charge: Can readily absorb mana easily and stores mana in great quantities. Because it can dissolve in water, it is great for increasing the mana storage capability of liquids and stabilizing aether charges. ingested salt gives an affinity for fire magic.

A-Charge: paradoxically, high levels of aether will increase resistance to fire magic.

A-Saturation: At aetheric saturation, ingested salt can completely negate the effects of fire and fire magic for a short period of time. Chemically pure Chlorides are able to stay saturated with Aether for much longer than most other minerals. It will last in this state for years in most cases.
Price: 1 beryl per kilogram.

Type: mineral.

Composition: NaCl

Density: 2.17g/cm3

Color: white

Fluorescence: -none-

Common uses: Salt is used to preserve food and add taste. It is also used in larger quantities in potion making to increase the mana capacity of water. Potions are made with salt that amplify, resist, and negate Fire Magic. Sodium chloride can be conjured by mages. In this form, it is used as a suspended shield of particles that readily absorbs mana, reducing the effectivness or even stopping incoming spells, especially that of Ice Magic.

Locations Found: Pretty much everywhere in small amounts, though almost all of it is in the oceans. Can also be found naturally occuring as the mineral Halite.

Additional Info: Humans put salt on almost everything they eat so their bodies tend to have an excess amount compared to other races. Because of the presence of mana and aether everywhere in the world in tiny amounts, humans tend to be better with fire magic. Humans also have a small resistance to fire magic thanks to the properties of this compound.

Lightning Salts

Description: Also known as a type of Lithium Chloride, lightning salts increase affinity for Lightning magic unless charged with aether, in which case it will increase resistance to lightning magic. Lightning salts can be toxic so care must be taken to not ingest more than is necessary for the desired effect.

M-Charge: Ingested lightning salts increase affinity for lightning magic.

A-Charge: Higher levels of aether will also increase resistanct to lightning magic.

A-Saturation: At aetheric saturation, ingested lightning salts can completely negate the effects of electricity and lightning magic for a short period of time.
Price: 100 beryls per kilogram.

Type: mineral.

Composition: Li Cl

Density: 2.06g/cm3

Color: white

Fluorescence: -none-

Common uses: Lightning salts are exclusively used in potion making on Vreathe to amplify, negate, and resist the effects of electricity and lightning magic. The Elves also use this as a medicine to treat mental conditions related to dragon corruption. The mental clarity lightning salts give in relation to magical corruption is not well understood.

Locations Found: Lightning salts are mixed in the water in the form of Lithium Carbonate at many different springs across Vreathe. Large scale gathering of this mineral occurs around the Boiling Islands. Lithium Carbonate is refined into Lithium Chloride with a solution of Hydrochloric Acid.

Water Salts

Description: Also known as a type of Potassium Chloride. Similar to other salts, Water salts will increase affinity for a specific element, then pardoxically increase resistance and completely negate the element at higher levels of aether. In the case of potassium salts, this would be Water.

M-Charge: Ingested water salts increase affinity for water magic.

A-Charge: Higher levels of aether will also increase resistance to water magic. It should be noted that at higher levels of aether and higher concentrations of potassium salts, this will actually cause the body to slowly dehydrate.

A-Saturation: At aetheric saturation, ingested water salts can completely negate the effects of water and water magic for a short period of time. This has its uses, but prolonged periods of water negation will cause severe dehydration, delerium, headaches, and eventually just death.
Price: 100 beryls per kilogram.

Type: mineral.

Composition: KCl

Density: 1.98g/cm3

Color: white, sometimes yellow or red due to chemical impurities

Fluorescence: -none-

Common uses: Water salts are used in potion making on Vreathe to amplify, negate, and resist the effects of water and water magic. They are also a major component in objects that allow so-called 'water breathing' which in fact just creates a magic field around the user that converts all water entering the mouth and nose into air.

Locations Found: Water salts are found in the form of the mineral Sylvite across many locations in Vreathe. In Cassel, Sylvite is found in the Mountains of Cil, the Boiling Islands, and the Sands of Nessa.

Unique Crystals

True Bloodstone

Description: A true Bloodstone is a very dense, perfectly clear, crimson crystal. It is fully charged with Aether and mana, and grants vampires nearly unlimited power to cast the spells they want. Only one was ever created. It required the sacrifice of thousands of humans to create.

Abilities: A vampire in possession of this bloodstone immediately becomes aware of every living thing with blood on the planet, as well as those of every world connected to Vreathe. This infinite awareness is so great it can break minds.

The gem's extremely powerful magic can also be used to open portals in space-time. It can be used to create new vampires or cure vampires of their blood magic curse. It allows a vampire to suck mana and aether out of any living being they can see. It can also rip a soul out of Meliheal the world tree, placing them in a new body. Someone revived in this form is a vampire. The number of abilities granted are too many to count and most have never been seen.
Price: -Priceless-

Type: Iron oxide mineral?

Composition: Fe2,O3

Density: 25g/cm3

Color: Transparent Crimson

Fluorescence: Glows bright red.

Locations Found: This stone was created in the kingdom of Yurria roughly 6 years ago. Vampires there sacrificed Yurrian children by the thousands, harvesting their blood and the magic contained within to create the true bloodstone.

Additional Info: A person named Lucia, the Rime Knight, destroyed this so-called true bloodstone. When she was in possession of, she was temporarily aware of everything in existence that had blood. She was also aware of Lithane, the first vampire, and her goal of using the bloodstone to open a portal to Vreathe and plunge the world into chaos. Lucia did the only reasonable thing and destroyed the crystal.

Eye of Senget

Description: The Eye of Senget is a fist sized gem that can take on an amorphous form. It was thought to be carved from one of Senget's Scales, but those that have held the gem think it comes from a different part of the dragon lord's body. Only one is known on the surface world. It was sacred to the Elves before it sank to the bottom of the sea in a storm. Only recently it was brought back to the surface.

Abilities: Users of this gem have precision control over all forms of water, whether it is in a liquid, vapor, or icy form. Then gem can also be used to create sentient constructs that can understand speech and be given basic commands. These constrcuts can take on many forms, but usually they look like a miniature sea serpent.

Other abilities include the ability to create elemental weapons that function as well as any piece of steel. These last for only an hour or so. The gem can also grant the ability to breathe under water to the wearer and anyone else the gem's user uses magic on, though the range is somewhat short, being less than 50 meters.

The Gem functions as a lore crystal, which means it can be charged with mana to see the memories within. These memories are of the dragon lord Senget, the Wellspring. Viewing these memories often gives the user an innate understanding of the forces of the universe that control water.

One final ability is that the gem can take on an amorphous liquid form. The purpose of this isn't known, but it did give one young elven girl the bright idea of drinking the gem to gain its power so she wouldn't have to carry it around all the time. This gem is still in her body or perhaps is a part of her now.
Price: -priceless-

Type: -unknown-

Composition: -unknown-

Density: 1.05 g/cm3

Color: aqua

Fluorescence: blue

Location Found: The Eye of Senget was a relic of the Silver Age. It was inside a temple that floated just offshore and was in possession of the Water Sage. A terrible storm destroyed the temple and the gem was lost for thousands of years. The Sea Elves of Atlatta were in possession of the gem for most fo this time, until the King of this nation came to the surface world and returned it to the surface.

Additional Info: Isabel Vernador has water magic that can only be described as masterful, so much so she impressed the Sengar, the spawn of Senget, and this was before she came into possession of this gem. After she gained the power of the gem, she was their equals. On the surface world, word spread around the Isabel was in possession of the water gem, and she started to be referred to as the Water Sage, a similar name given to the owners of the other great elven gems. When dealing with other elves, she normally leaves out the part where she drank the gem and absorbed its powers.

Saint Nora's Faith

Description: Saint Nora's Faith is a very large piece of banded chalcedony, specifically a bright blue Agate crystal. It is a part of a legendary item known as Saint Nora's Staff. The current owner of this staff is Aerynn Vernador.

Abilities: This gem stores absurd amounts of mana and aether. Charging the staff is automatic after a day, as its charge seems to come from Saint Nora and the World Tree itself. The Staff has as much power as a Phoenix Pinion, and can be used to cast high level healing spells, instantly healing just about any injury. The staff can also bring a soul back from the brink of death, as long as they haven't yet entered the wellspring of souls yet.

Descendants of Saint Nora also have access to similar powers that Nora had when she was the Elder Goddess of Order and Time, but on a much smaller scale. Aerynn has used the staff to temporarily slow time around her by as much as half. She can also cleanse Chaos using the staff, which it's a god's aether or dragon corruption.
Price: -Priceless-

Type: cryptocrystalline quartz

Composition: Si,O2

Density: 2.62g/cm3

Color: blue with bands of lighter blue and white

Fluorescence: glows white.

Additional Info: Saint Nora was said to have placed a piece of her soul into this gem on creation. This makes Saint Nora's Faith function as a Lore Crystal, allowing someone to view her memories when the crystal is charged with mana. It is very highly recommended that no one does this unless they are a descendant of Saint Nora as she does not think highly of humans otherwise.

The heart of Anarion

Description: Also called a Dragon Star, The heart of Anarion is an unusually large diamond, roughly the size of a human fist. Several of these hearts are known to exist, but only one has a known location, and is currently in the possession of Renelle Vernador. These gems are described as being black as night and they cast a glow of inverted light.

Abilities: This gem seemingly has infinite mana capacity, though only a certain amount can be drawn out at any given time. Because diamonds have an affinity for all types of magic, it allows the user to cast very powerful spells of any type they desire. Ren constantly charges her excess mana into this gem, then uses it later in spectacular fashion with her fire magic.

There are rumors that a dragon star can warp time and bend gravity and space around itself, but Ren has never tried and will probably never be able to. While Diamonds are a type of Aethercite and can store aether, the ease of using this aether gets progressively more difficult with the size of the diamond. At the size of a fist, the aether stored inside the crystal are forever locked away and unusable.
Price: -Priceless-

Type: native mineral

Composition: C

Density: 3.5g/cm3

Color: black.

Fluorescence: Inverts colors with a pale blue light.

Additional Info: Dragon hearts can function as a Lore Crystal, which allows someone to view the memories of the Dragonlord Anarion the Diamond when charged with mana. The memories viewed are very brief, but Ren has noted that these memories have given her an almost innate understanding of how magic works. She has the ability to shape fire magic in ways that most beings, possibly even Beirunes, the God of Fire, could only dream of understanding.

Xonde

Description: Xonde, which was an ancient word for "Infinity" was the original name for a large amethyst gem that was the centerpiece of the Crown of Cassel, which was traditonally worn by the ruler of that kingdom. It was later split into three smaller gems that were set in rings. All these lesser gems have the same abilities as the original.

Abilities: The vernadors are descendants of Saint Nora, and can access many of her abilities, including the ability to speak to the dead, become a conduit for souls and more. Usually this requires being in contact with the roots of Meliheal the world tree. Xonde amplifies these abilities, allowing a Vernador to use these abilities without being anywhere near these roots.

This gem is also a marker for the true rulers of Cassel. The gem originally could be summoned by the kind at any time. since it was split into three, these gems became forever bound to the wearers.

Price: -Priceless-

Type: Oxide Mineral

Composition: Si,O2

Density: 2.65g/cm3

Color: Deep Purple

Fluorescence: Glows Green

Location Found: Xonde was originally found in the Island of Rosika by Vernador, the first king of Cassel. He was the first son of Saint Nora, and mixed his blood with the gem so it would be bound to his bloodline forever. The Gem usually sat in Wrethilin for the next 2900 years or so until it was split into three smaller portions.

Variations

Ring of the North - This ring was in the possession of Brenon Vernador, but is now worn by Saya Diaz. She has tried throwing this ring away numerous times but it always magically reappears on her finger. Saya also used the power of gem with her own power to temporarily stop time, This happened at the moment her parents died 8 years ago, and she has not been able to stop time since.

Ring of the West - Worn by Larielle Vernador. The gem is purple in appearance but appears more red under sunlight.

Ring of the South - Worn by Eldon Vernador. The gem is almost colorless but was originally almost blue in appearance. This has been used by many of eldon's enemies to reason that he is no longer eligible to be King of Cassel, how the color the gem changed is not well understood and has never been used as a metric for if the king has the right to rule or not.

Star of Ibora

Description: The Star of Ibora is a 'star sapphire', a type of sapphire with rutile inclusions. These rutile inclusions result in a star shaped reflection on the gem's surface. This gem is opaque and has a dee blue color. The name Ibora comes from the Water Goddes Ibora, an ancient being of the Silver Age that sacrificed herself to prevent Meliheal the world tree from burning and destroying all of existence. This gem is set in a Ring, the Ring of the North.

Abilities: The wearer of this gem can at will create a large field of aqua colored light, made of pure aether, that interacts with spells the wearer casts. This influx of aether also allows the wear to cast spells they normally can't. Saya Diaz used this aqua light with her own magic to create a shield that deflected incoming arrows around her. Saya has refused to use the gem's power since then.

King Brenon Vernador, the previous owner of this gem, used it when he was a general in Cassel's armies. He used it to create a field of magic around himself that slowed projectiles and incoming melee weapons, and to heal several injuries after the battles were over.
Price: -Priceless-

Type: mineral.

Composition: Al2O3

Density: 4 g/cm3

Color: blue

Fluorescence: white

Location Found: The Star of Ibora was found by the first king of Cassel in a Bronze Aged palace in the Sea of Wrethas. This gem was found to have strange properties and was polished and set in a piece of jewelry. Through the centuries the gem was set in a number of different pieces until in the 2980s it was set inside of the Ring of the North, along with another gem, a piece of Xonde.

Author's Notes

  • (Update 12/23/2023) - Started the process of splitting into smaller articles. I will keep this one when I am done, probably as an in-universe explanation for how the people of this world classify their little magic stones. Will also have a short glossary that lists the stones and defines what they are.

  • VERY EARLY work in progress. This article might not even exist in a few days. Just posted for feedback for now. Looking to see if the information is presented in a clear enough manner.

  • I keep describing these aethercite materials, sometimes saying what happens when you charge it with mana, and sometimes saying what happens when you charge it with aether. Sometimes I am super vague about it or I don't mention it at all, instead waving my hands and saying "magic!"...
  • Yeah, that needed to change and I needed a reference article that concisely listed what every material is and does with each type of magical energy.

  • I was debating whether to turn these into individual articles or not. If I do, then each aethercite article will take roughly 300-450 words. It is preferable because if I reach my goal of having 100 entries in this article....yeah, that's like 40,000 words...in one article. That's too much...

I love this giant list of stones and their properties! The image header is so delicious, too.   On the subject of your debate: I love big compilation articles! I think you'd do really well with an in-the-middle approach of keeping this article and having the individual entries/descriptions be very brief, then going into all of the details in individual articles!

Thanks for that idea! I'll probably end up going with that...

Hi Chrispy, i am the giver of feedback, i love the article, but I do have some suggestions and questions for you, may they be helpful to you :)   i think you should try to make the pricing a bit more clear, for example 10000 beryls per 500 carats, could also be written as 20 beryls per carat, etc. also you should clarify your definition of carat, as most people will associate the term with the purity of gold, not as a measure of weight,(including myself, I had to look it up).   lastly, the scales of senget produce one Atlantic ocean of water per 36500 years, where does this water go? is flooding an issue? does this magically produced water decay back into mana?

GoldenPants, giver of feedback... I do appreciate it!   Yeah, when I was writing it, I was thinking of it as a measure of weight, but as I typed dozens of these gems, it kind of lost it's meaning when I had four different measures of weight in the article. There's other problems with it (people not knowing a carat is 0.2 grams aside) so... yeah... When I rework this article, there will be a chart with the price of each gem and it will be in grams across the board.   On the Scales of Senget... in my worldbuilding, there is a giant hole out in the Aetheric ocean, which is basically the Atlantic ocean of my world. This hole is a portal to another world, so it could possibly even out. I did not think about it that hard so I need to do some math of my own and adjust numbers when I get around to sorting things out here.

    Jan 2, 2024 21:13

sounds great, ill stay tuned for the updates !!   i would like to read more of this giant hole, do you already have an article about it?

I do not. It is a plan for this year since I got the world it connects to written about during World Ember (The Moon Lazulia) which I forgot to even write about in that article... yay, more work in 2024!

good luck dude, dont strain your brain too hard hahah, you can do it :)
