Silicon
Silicon, along with Oxygen forms the basis for Earth Magic as it exists inside most rocks on the planet, in the form of various chemical compounds. Conjuring earth is difficult to impossible depending on what it is, though most mages can manage to conjure small amounts of sand. A common spell involves a mix of Air and Earth Magic, creating a Burst of Sand, which can easily blind almost anyone. Most Earth Magic actually involves the manipulation of Earth rather than the creation of it.
Silicon forms various crystals with other elements and all forms of Silicon can store small amounts of data when charged with mana. The most common and most important of these are silicon dioxide, or silica, also known as Quartz crystals. Quartz can not only store data, but can store intact memories. Many mages have stored important memories inside crystals for later retrieval. If you find yourself in the dangerous The Olimian wastes, you may come across various Stone Heads. These heads were crystalized long ago and used to be living people. If you charge them with a little bit of mana, you can glimpse the last memories from people who lived tens of thousands of years ago, though in most cases, you will see an impossibly bright light followed by darkness.
Quartz crystals that are too small to hold a useful mana charge, such as sand, is melted down and turned into Glass. While Glass cannot hold memories like larger Quartz crystals can, it is a very cheap and effective method of storing mana. Glass also has the property of unleashing the stored mana into a spell of sorts when it is shattered, whether that is an explosive one or it was a spell to conjure large amounts of water. Glass combined with elements like Iron are very effective at trapping mana charges. Most basic potions use a glass container combined with at least one metallic element to prevent the charge from disappearing.
Silicon Carbide, or Carborundum, can be found as naturally occuring Moissanite crystals. These crystals are nearly indestructible, can hold a charge of almost any type of mana, and can greatly boost the effects of Lightning Magic.
Silver Age texts refer to a way to grow Carborundum quickly by taking a Moissanite crystal and suspending it in sand and carbon, then charging it with large amounts of mana while it is also suspended in a flame. It is a complicated process and most Iron Age scholars have been unable to figure it out. The Scionic Order of the Abyss, a Knightly Order from the Kingdom of Galeska, has mages that figured out the process. It required no less than three mages all doing different tasks on the same material to grow and shape the material.
This complicated process pays off however. After the carborundum is shaped, they are layered over the front of steel armor, strengthening it considerably. Knights of the Order of the Abyss are equipped with full body Carbide Plate Armor, appearing black as night, and immune to all but the most powerful physical forces.
