Fluorine

Article Contents

Fluorine is a highly reactive element that is slightly unstable when charged with mana. It forms into various fluorides when combined with metallic elements and forms various acids when combined with Hydrogen and/or Sulphur. It also forms minerals in the form of Fluorite. It is technically a cryogenic catalyst for Ice Magic but due to its toxicity, it is never used for this purpose by most mages.

Fluorine is often conjured with various other elements to form acids. One of the simplest Acid spells can be cast by conjuring Hydrogen and Fluorine at the same time. Hydrofluoric Acic is toxic and highly corrosive. Sending a spray of this acid at a target will cause extreme pain and start to melt the skin. It is often treated by channeling mana into the burn site to destroy the Fluorine so the skin can be easily healed with Life Magic.

If left untreated, Hydrofluoric Acid almost always causes a condition known as Magic Scarring in the affected area. In this case, the body attempts to protect itself. It will pull mana from the surrounding skin to conujure large amounts of calcium to deactivate the acid, creating hardened patches of skin. This skin will glow a pale orange, and greatly increases the ability to store and cast Earth Magic. How the body knows to conjure Calcium to protect itself is not known. Unlike many magic scars that are permanent, these are only temporary and will fall off naturally, after around six months to two years.

Tiny amounts of various charged Fluorides are used in various magic potions to quickly heal various magical effects and temporarily grant immunity to them. Magnanese Fluoride will temporarily block the effects of Life Magic such as Regeneration. This is actually quite important because unchecked regeneration can result in widespread cancer across the body.

Iron fluoride will block the effects of Earth Magic. Cobalt from fire, Nickel from wind, and Copper from Water and Ice. Silver Fluoride will temporarily block the effects of any mana, including Aether, the primordial energy of the gods.

Fluorine will combine with Calcium to form Fluorite. These minerals combine with various elemental impurities to form crystals that can be any color. Fluorite crystals absorb ambient mana and convert it into visible light. They can also be charged with minimal amounts of mana, making the crystals much brighter for several hours to several days. The mana can also be readily absorbed from the crystals turning off the light. Different fluorite crystals will glow different colors. These are commonly known on Vreathe as Glow Stones. They also make great Mana Detectors, though Neon filled glass is a much better mana detector.

Glow Stones are pretty common in some cities on Vreathe in the form of Street Lamps and specialized mages will walk through the streets to turn the lamps on each night. Most people have a few glow stones in their homes and anyone with even a small understanding on magic on Vreathe will use them in place of candlelight.
