Moonstone

Article Contents

Description

Moonstone is a potassium rich feldspar and a type of orthoclase. These stone have a brilliant shimmer that appears similar to the light of the full moon, which is how these stones got their name. These stones can be transparent to opaque and roughly half a dozen varieties are known to exist.

Mana Charge

Moonstones will glow depending on the color. This glow is said to be warm and bright. During the day the stones seem to lose their light but stay charged. You can make a moonstone give off its glow during the day by just charging it with more mana. The excess converted into light. Mana from moonstones has an affinity for fire, water, gravity, and ice magic, and will increase the power of these spells by roughly 50%.

Aether Charge

Moonstones can't be charged with any type of aether, but only one specific type. It is is said that moon stones are charged by the light of the greater full moon. Aether from the moon washes over these stones over time, charging them. Moonstone does become lighter when charged with aether but the effect is negligible compared to actual gravity stones. There doesn't seem to be any other noticeable effects from this charging until it reaches saturation.

A person who has the Moon Trace can use the aether inside of moonstones and add it to their spellcasting, significantly increasing their power. Anyone who doesn't have the moon trace seems to unable to take advantage of this aether.

Aetheric Saturation

When aetheric saturation is reached, moonstones will glow depending on the color and will glow at all times of the day. This glow is said to be warm and bright. The aetheric light from these stones also provides impossible warmth to any living thing it touches, giving them comfort even in the middle of winter.

Effects of forging metals

When a ground up moon stone is added to steel during the forging process, it creates a bright bluish-white metal known as Moon Steel, though different colored moonstones can give a subtly different hue. This blade shimmers in moonlight. It also amplifies fire, water, gravity, and ice magic slightly. When a person with the Moon Trace uses one of these blades, their magic takes on a brilliant bluish white hue, even if it makes no sense, such as with fire magic.

Common uses

Moonstones are used by the Elves of Lyonne in their street lamps. This gives their cities a soft bluish glow compared to human cities in nearby North Cassel, who use Sodalite to make their cities glow a more harsh bright orange. Moonstones can't be connected with copper wire like Sodalite, so a Mage Lighter has to go through the city and manually charge the crystals. Luckily Moonstones hold their mana charge for several years and don't need to be charged every night.

The Kingdom of Rinea uses moon steel and fashions them into short swords for traditional ceremony. Some people with the moon trace, such as Raini and Lucia, have weapons made with moon steel. Raini owns a pair of short swords, while Lucia owns both a greatsword and a mace.

Locations Found

In Cassel, white moonstone is very common in the Mountains of Cil and the Serosie mountains. Blue moonstone can be found in the Island of Rosika. Large deposits of moonstone are more common in the Dark Lands and the Continent of Tensen.
