Krellia

Situated on the plateau between North Lake and South Lake lakes, just where the foothills become true peaks in the Andorran Mountains, Krellia sits alone in the last remaining true wilderness on the Island of Eldoria. Its ancient walls, the crumbling stone patched with timbers, run between the twin lakes, each nearly a league long, making the city itself huge in area, if not in density. The walls may no longer have the structural integrity to keep out ballista and battering rams, but unlike those surrounding other settlements on the island they still serve a purpose: keeping the owlbears and other predators from snacking on residents when night falls.

With such space behind the walls the city itself looks more like an overground village on Prydith or the wild central shores of the Inner Seas than a proper Eldorian city. With no plan, the ancient settlement has grown organically without rhyme or reason, with smithy's abutting small farmsteads and stables for herds of sheep and goat that are let out into the surrounding hills under the watchful eyes of vigilant shepherds during the day stand adjacent to taverns and candlemakers. Much like the haphazard placement of trades, the density of buildings varies as one travels between cobbled neighborhoods and rows of treelined small farms. In the center of it all, standing behind its twenty foot high walls, is Andor's Keep, home to the Count and his retinue.

Docks Near the West End of South Lake

The city survives for the most part from the land within and around it. The hills provide pastures and fields for carrots, turnips, potatoes, lentils, and beans - anything green being grown in the smaller farms within the safety of the city walls. The lakes provide for a small fleet of fisherman, though in the past years as the population has continued to grow within the city catches have continued to dwindle leading to unpopular restrictions enacted by the Count's late father. The forest, of course, provides timber, but there is market for it beyond the city as transporting it to the Theyla or Phelandria on the cost would increase costs to the point of unprofitability. The exception to this rule is the need for massive, straight trunks that can be fashioned into masts for the Imperial Navy's mighty galleons, but while lucrative, the market is narrow enough to limit its participants. Most of the mines in area have long since run dry, with only a pair of mines that yield tin and copper remaining.

The lack of industry and isolation have led Krellia and its leading family to become the subject to many a joke in the taverns of the Empire's larger city. Its people have a reputation - fair or not - as a bit uncivilized. Hardworking and good at heart, a noble in Eldarin might say, but a bit backwards and dirty.
