Bentham Settlement in Tarien | World Anvil

Bentham

With more higher value metals in its mines than Caladon, the village of Bentham stands in stark contrast to that mining town. For one thing, smoke does not hang thick over the valley. Instead, only the morning fog rising off the clear waters Rheuthen River obscures the sharply painted red and green painted timbers and white washed plaster of the small homes and shops that surround the village green. Visitors may wrinkle their nose at the sulfur scent in the air but locals claim both improves water's taste and extends their lives.

With gold and some semi-precious stones in the Rheuthengage Mountain mines nearby, Bentham does nothing with their bounty other than to ship it down river on flatboats for sale in Rivermeet. And while the town certainly has its own tailor, smith, and other craftsmen, those same flatboats return fine goods from Grennig.

The town does have a robust military presence, given the value of its mines and its proximity to Mennith. The armory where soldiers are stationed is a octagonal shaped compound made from huge stones of hewn granite. In addition to barracks it contains a small refugee center where dissidents fleeing the Grand Duchy can stay while they are processed.
