Lake Galen

Named after Andaran Galen, leader of the first expedition of Human to see its shores, this huge body of water is nearly twenty leagues across and fifteen wide at its widest point. No one is sure of its depths though most assume it descends thousands of feet. It is in the murky waters, far below the steppes surrounding the lake that Gara, a mighty serpent, supposedly lives.

The valley surrounding the lake supports the bulk of Galencia's population, particularly in the great city of Geyla on its western shores and the town of Geran on the eastern one. Masted ships, some nearly as large as a sea going vessel, call each settlement home, ferrying people across the lake and trolling its depths for sturgeon, bream, and other freshwater fish.

The surrounding mountains create strange wind patterns in both the valley and the lake. On many days strong breezes speed ships along to their destinations. Others are deadly calm. Sailors claim that the calmest days always precede a great storm when the winds in the valley swirl to the left like one of the great ocean bred hurricanes from the Sea of Storms.
