Gara

Mythical Monster of Lake Galen

Tales of this serpent-like monster that resides deep beneath the waters Lake Galen have a number of points in common, no matter who tells them. First, Gara is always referred to as a "she". This may or may not be significant, locals will tell you, but one should never refer to her as "he." Almost all of the tales where a sailor refers to Gara in the masculine end in tragedy.

Secondly, no matter who describes Gara, be it an old man fishing off a dock in Geyla, a child skipping stones along the south shore, or a sailer out of Geran fighting a lake gale to get his goods to market, everyone agrees that she is a deep emerald green with scales more akin to a snake than to a fish. In the right light, of course, those scales can shimmer and reflect a myriad of light, but that is merely a trick of the water, like a rainbow on sunny day.

Finally, everyone in Galencia knows that she prefers an offering of live pig. Surviving on a diet of fish, woe is the sailor who sacrifices bream or sturgeon to the mighty Gara. A proper sacrifice of a live pig - its size commensurate with the size of the vessel - is the only way to guarantee that she won't take her hunger out on a ship.
