New Kharolin
The capital and largest settlement in the Underground Kingdom of the Children of Kharl, New Kharolin was built first as a fortress by a retreating Khadric force. Khadric memories are long and the city has retained the feeling of a citadel, particularly in the upper city which encompasses some 10,000 square feet surrounded by 20-foot walls of carefully worked granite. While many farms dot the valley surrounding the fortress, it boasts no buildings other than those of military utility. It also has but one set of massive gates Adamantine that lead to the lower city.
The lower city has five levels, each about two miles square, and may sub-caverns, that serve as mines, great farms for Jardine Mushrooms, and the private retreats of various clans. While the first and newest level retains the utilitarian feel of the upper city, with barracks, forges, and parade grounds, the further into the city one goes, the more ornate it becomes. Indeed, the Khadra have had more than two millennia to decorate their home and few surfaces are plain stone. Carvings and reliefs cover walls and pillars, some colored with spectacularly colored paints. Fresco decorated ceilings are common in both public spaces and private residences. The height of each level increases as one descends, as well, with hall of Clan Chiefs on the lowest level having some ceilings nearly a hundred feet in height.
