Minarick Settlement in Tarien | World Anvil

Minarick

Like all Khadric towns, Minarick boasts both an upper and lower portion. The lower portion serves as homes for the citizens, workshops for craftsmen, inns for travelers, and hosts the grand marketplace, while the upper portion is mostly farms and pasture. As the youngest of the three main settlements in the Underground Kingdom, Minarick was built in 594 AC for several purposes.

First, and foremost in the minds of the clans, while the town does not sit atop any particularly valuable mines like Norharlin, it does serve as an access hub for a number of smaller, but important mines in the southern part of the kingdom. Indeed, below the lower city, where one accesses the Kingdom wide tunnel system, a vast cavern exists with passages that lead to New Kharolin New Kharolin, the Trans-Rheuthengage Highway, and at least a dozen small mines.

Secondly, the Khadra found that the valley in which Minarick sits, makes for some of the best farmland in the Kingdom. Vast fields of potatoes, beets, and other root vegetables grow here. Some enterprising Khadra have even experimented with starting crops early in glass-roofed barns, seeking to get two plantings per growing season. In addition, many Khadra keep flocks of thick-wooled mountain sheep in the steep hills surrounding the valley. These sheep provide warm wool for Khadric clothing, horns for drinking, and off course mutton for Khadric tables.

Finally, the Khadra found that most humans became distraught then travelling the tunnels that connected the Kingdom to the outside world. While the journey to Minarick is only a few days shorter than that to New Kharolin, most traders seemed willing to pay premium to conduct business with as little tunnel time as possible. As such, Minarick has become the trading hub of the kingdom.

The fact that some much raw material funnels through Minarick, both from its satellite mines and from the outside world, has made it a popular place for craftsmen, especially jewelers and smiths. Many take in raw materials and process them into tools and other goods that are immediately shipped south, back to human and Soulmeliti markets. The fact that most of these goods do remain in the Kingdom sometimes leads to faster production times and lower (by Khadric standards at least) workmanship. While still of amazing quality to an outsider, many craftsmen in New Kharolin turn their beards up at the sight of Minarick crafted goods.
