Norharlin Settlement in Tarien | World Anvil

Norharlin

Unlike New Kharolin, Norhalin is a city of great beauty, set into the cliffs overlooking the Mothkarin River. The upper city boasts building sung from the mountains themselves, great curved bulbs clinging to the sides of cliffs like waves perpetually cresting on the shore. This cliff-hanging buildings typically serve as homes for wealthy craftsmen and warriors, as it has become fashionable in Norhalin to “have a view”, something unheard of in other Khadric settlements.

Artisans have decorated the lower city, which in many cases is as high up the cliff face as the upper city, so that statues grow out of pillars, and intricate designs decorate each street. Marble and obsidian, with their contrasting colors, make up much of the stonework. Granite and Mithril constitute the rest. Sadly, few non-Khadra ever travel to Norhalin to view its splendor.

In addition to the Mithril and other mines that bring wealth to the city, animal husbandry is a key industry. In particular, in the late spring, most Khadra pause their daily work to participate in the salmon run, when thousands of the fish travel upriver from the Gulf of Kharl to spawn. In the course of a week, the town restocks its larders with smoked and salted fish to both lasts the year And trade with the southern settlements. Like in Minarick, mountain sheep and root vegetables, in particular the hardy and Khardic favorite parsnip, are raised tiered pastures cut into the cliffs across the river. An ornate, spun stone bridge connects these farms to the main city. Despite the excesses, Norhalins remain practical as the bridge is rigged to for east destruction in the unlikely event of an invasion.
