Kingdom of Mera

The Kingdom of Mera is a large and diverse region located in the southern part of the continent of Midvar. It encompasses a vast territory that stretches from the tropical regions along the Amethyst Currents in the south to the temperate plains in the east, and the vast forest of the Ebonwood all along the west coast and the Wolfswood forest on the east coast.   Mera has a diverse landscape, with its southernmost regions featuring a tropical climate, while the rest of the kingdom experiences a more temperate climate. The kingdom is also home to a variety of geographical features, including plains, forests, mountains, and coastlines.   The kingdom was once a prosperous and united region under the rule of Alveros Tarrenshade. However, the tragic events that occurred during the Grand amphitheater massacre brought about a new era of governance under King Cale Tisserand. The King's first action was to outlaw arcane magic, creating the Knights Tarrenshade to enforce this edict.   The Knights Tarrenshade have been tasked with arresting arcane magic users and placing them into the Pens of Bariya, which serve as prisons for those who violate the Tarrenshade Edict. This has led to a great deal of tension between magic users and non-magic users within the kingdom.   Despite the turmoil caused by the Tarrenshade Edict, the Kingdom of Mera remains a prosperous region with a rich cultural heritage. Its cities and towns are bustling centers of commerce, art, and learning. The people of Mera are known for their creativity, resilience, and fierce loyalty to their kingdom

Structure

The Kingdom of Mera is organized as a feudal monarchy, with the King as the central authority and the lords and ladies of each territory serving as his vassals. The King holds ultimate authority over the entire kingdom and makes all final decisions, but he relies heavily on the support and advice of his councilors and the Lords and Ladies of the various territories. The Lord's Council is composed of the lords and ladies of each territory and serves as a representative body for the different regions of the kingdom. Each Lord or Lady is responsible for governing their own territory, maintaining their own military force, and contributing to the King's army in both coin and men. However, they must also align their policies and actions with the will of the King to maintain stability within the kingdom. In addition to their governing duties, the lords and ladies also serve as advisors to the King on matters related to their respective territories.   The Curia Regis is the King's inner council of advisors, charged with managing the day-to-day functions of the kingdom. This council is composed of a small group of trusted advisors who have the King's ear and help him make important decisions on matters such as diplomacy, defense, and law enforcement.   The system of lordships in Mera is based on heredity, with the seat passing down to the named successor of the current lord or lady. In the absence of an heir, the King has the power to elevate any individual he sees fit for the position. This ensures that the Lordships remain within the hands of those who are deemed fit and loyal to the King, while also allowing for some degree of flexibility in the system of succession.

Public Agenda

In light of the ongoing war with Seggath, the public agenda of Mera is primarily focused on defending its borders and securing a favorable outcome in the conflict. The Kingdom sees the war as a means of avenging the death of King Tarrenshade and restoring its honor and reputation in the eyes of its neighbors.   The King and his advisors are likely working to rally support among the lords and common people of Mera, as well as seeking alliances with other neighboring kingdoms or factions that may be sympathetic to their cause. They may also be trying to weaken Seggath's military and political position through acts of sabotage, espionage, or diplomacy.   The war effort is likely placing a significant strain on the Kingdom's resources, and the public agenda may also include efforts to maintain stability and prosperity within the realm despite the challenges posed by the conflict. This could include measures such as encouraging trade and commerce, supporting agriculture and industry, and providing aid and support to those affected by the war.

History

Mera was a prosperous kingdom united under the first king of Mera, Alven Tarrenshade. Tarrenshade defended Mera and brought her great prosperity during his rule. The King's rule ended when he and his family were killed by the High Mage Arkadi Tasimreth, who tried to steal power. Any magic other than divine has been outlawed throughout all of Mera, and the Knights Tarrenshade enforce this edict, arresting practitioners of magic in the Pens of Bariya in Kings Rest. Over the past 24 Years there have been two purges, each lasting 100 days, the amount of time it took to capture Tarrenshades Killer. During the purge public executions of the magic users are carried out in all of the cities of Mera. In the aftermath of the king's death, Mera was no longer unified. There is talk of the collapse of the Kingdom and that the great cities of Mera we become their own independent states. Also amongst this backdrop Yohir and Seggath, have taken this time of turmoil to try and expand their kingdoms into the Meran territory. King Cale Tisserand has ordered conscription to bolster the ranks of the Meran military to protect its borders. Many have tried to conquer Mera and every time this has happened, the Meran people have come together and put aside their internal differences to beat back the foreign invaders, however this time the fear is that the Kingdom will not survive.

Foreign Relations

The Kingdom of Mera and the Empire of Seggath are currently at war due to a long-standing dispute over the death of King Tarrenshade. This has led to a strain in their foreign relations, with both sides engaging in military campaigns and diplomatic negotiations to gain the upper hand.   The Dominion of Yohir and the Kingdom of Mera have a poor relationship due to a long-standing dispute over control of the Ebonwood and surrounding area. In recent years, this challenge has only become louder, causing a growing strain in relations between the two nations.   The Ashen Dynasty and the Kingdom of Mera have a historically good relationship. The Dragonborn nation has maintained an alliance and open trade with the Kingdom of Mera since the slave uprising in 3970 AoU. However, in the past two decades, the people of Mera have become distrustful of Dragonborn in general due to the actions of Arkadi, who was a Dragonborn and killed the King.   The Elves of Florindel and the Kingdom of Mera have a good relationship, with the Elven nation maintaining neutrality when it comes to the dealings of man. They have followed this path since the time of the War of Velicë Glantha. The Elves of Florindel maintain limited but open trade with Mera.

Agriculture & Industry

The Kingdom of Mera has a diverse economy, with both agriculture and industry playing important roles. The southern regions of the kingdom benefit from a warm, tropical climate, which allows for the cultivation of crops such as sugarcane, coffee, and various fruits. In the central and northern regions, wheat, corn, and other grains are grown, and cattle and sheep are raised for meat and wool. Fishing and aquaculture also provide an important source of food and income for coastal regions.   In terms of industry, Mera has a thriving mining sector, with rich deposits of iron, copper, gold, and other minerals located throughout the kingdom. The Obsidian Legion is responsible for managing and protecting the mines, which are a critical source of revenue for the kingdom. Craftsmen and artisans use these raw materials to create weapons, armor, jewelry, and other goods, which are sold both domestically and abroad.   Trade also plays a significant role in Mera's economy, with the kingdom maintaining commercial ties with its neighboring nations as well as distant lands. Mera's location on the sea and its well-developed ports allow for the export of goods such as precious metals, gems, and spices, while also facilitating the import of luxury goods and technology from other lands.

The city is surrounded by thick walls, towers, and gates, and is guarded by a garrison of soldiers who are always on high alert due to the ongoing war between Mera and Seggath.   The city itself is built on a series of hills, with narrow streets that wind their way up and down, making it difficult for armies to mount an attack. The buildings in Grimgate are made of stone, with sloping roofs, and the streets are lined with shops, taverns, and inns that cater to the needs of the locals and the refugees who have fled to the city from the countryside.   The Lower Tiverwhal river flows through the heart of Grimgate, providing a vital source of water for the people who live there. The river is also used for transport, with barges and boats coming and going from the city's docks.
