Gwilen River

Geography

The Gwilen River begins in the County of Cenomannie, flowing nearly West in a slow, meandering path through Gwitreg and then picking up speed as it descends into Roazhon Basin. At Roazhon, where numerous smaller tributaries join it. After the confluence, it widens considerably, flowing Southwest across The Armorican Peninsula.   Within the Barony of Redon, the river becomes navigable by oceangoing ships, granting the region its nickname of Greenport or Forestport. The river becomes the border between the Lordship of Mitaud and its Northern neighbors, first Redon, then the Barony of Arzal. The town of La Roch provides a key crossing as the Gwilen passes through Ogre's Forest.   The river empties into the Pleg-mor Gwaskogn between Arzal and the Barony of Gwenrann, making up a key part of the Ar Briwer wetlands. The mouth of the Gwilen is infamous for hidden rocks and dramatically shifting tides, making navigation difficult.   The Gwilen is known for its numerous tributaries, with almost 100 small streams and creeks entering it throughout its flow.

  • History

The Gwilen has long been considered the functional, and in many cases the actual border between the oft-rival counties of Roazhon and Naoned. The largely navigable river has provided access into the ar goat, allowing for communication, trade and exploitation of resources, as well as armed incursions deep into Lethan territory.   The ports of La Roch and Redon have flourished as oceangoing craft have adapted to allow access deep into the interior.
