Kastell-Paol (+)

The capital of the Viscounty of Léon, built along a wide bay to the northwest of Montroulez

Demographics

A city long dominated by the Southern Church, 80% of the population belongs to the faith, with 17% druidic and 3% other (largely traders from far off lands) making up the rest. However, the influence of the Faith has begun to wane as the Druids make a resurgence, spurred on by a major bleed.   A community of farmers, traders and shipbuilders, wealth is unevenly spread across social strata, with the very wealthy living in manors and stately homes within and outside of the city walls. Like all of Breizh, its female population is higher than average. There is a significant, but not overwhelming population of Kontammet living in the immediate area.

Government

The Capital of Leon and the seat of the Viscount, Konstanza de Leon takes an active role in the daily affairs of the city. The Bishopric of Leon is also based in this town, with the Bishop traditionally taking on a large amount of temporal power, residing in a great mansion opposite the cathedral.

Defences

The city is surrounded by high stone walls, manned by a permanent garrison. The Viscount's castle and the Castle of Anne, on a small island in the bay, provide additional defense.

Industry & Trade

A large market town, known for its vegetables, especially artichokes. The port is a major importer of wine and exporter of vegetables and other produce, and sports a robust shipbuilding center.   The city is host to a yearly bardic challenge of the recital of Lais.

Infrastructure

A well-settled town with cobbled roads and a built up harbour, including drydocks and shipyards.

Guilds and Factions

The Merchantmen - The Merchantmen have a significant influence here, dominating local trade and operating out a large manor in the center of town.

History

Established as the seat of the Bishopric of Leon, the city has flourished as a market town, as well as a pilgrimage site along the Tro Breizh , with visitors arriving to see the Cathedral or the megaliths on the outside of town. The city has frequently been occupied by forces from the Kingdom of Logres over its history.

Architecture

A cathedral sits within the city walls, its twin steeples the highest in Briezh.   Elaborate, turreted mansions line the upscale neighborhoods, homes to traders and shipwrights.

Geography

Located in the Northwest of Breizh along the picturesque coastline of sandy beaches of the Bay of Montroulez. The area is prone to flooding, occasionally significantly. These storms appear tied to the Abyss and frequently coincide with attacks from the Finfolk or, rarely, voidhorrors, the floodwaters leaving diseased, corrupted pollution on the shores.
