Rade de Brest

Geography

The Rade de Brest is located in the Penn-ar-bed, the Western tip of The Armorican Peninsula, where the Aon and Elorn rivers empty into the Mor Bras. The large natural roadstead is protected from the sea by the Crozon Peninsula and the Plateau de Leon. To the East, the Plougastel Peninsula, dominated Meneziou Are form a spine between the two river valleys, dramatically cutting into the harbor. The coast is jagged, ringed by peninsulas and river deltas, creating an irregular, halting shoreline, with numerous inlets between the spines of land reaching out into the harbor.   The Elorn, the Northern River, largely follows a straight path along the Plougastel Peninsula and the Northern coast until it passes the narrow straight formed with the Roscanvel Peninsula, the northern "arm" of Crozon's cruciform shape. The Aon, leaving the Kastellin Basin to the South of the Plougastel, cutting into the peninsula with the bowl-like Baie of Daoulas and making wide divets in the softer soil of the Crozon, coming up against the hard granite border of the Roscanvel and joining the Elorn's exit to the sea.   Several small islands, including some Phantom Isles, can be found within the roadstead. The most notorious of these is the Enez-Marv, off Crozon, where ships suspected of carrying Yellow Plague or The Shivers are redirected, and in the most extreme cases, driven aground.

Natural Resources

The harbour is well situated for trade, possessing shelter form the wild ocean, and its wide breadth and deep waters allowing the navigation of both large oceangoing ships and Windships. Ports have been established at Brest, Landern and Kastellin. Landern benefits greatly from the harbour, a merchant city second only to Montroulez in terms of commercial wealth.
