Episode 11: Poached Lion Report in Abios | World Anvil

Episode 11: Poached Lion

General Summary

Temple of Torm's Coming - 13th of Vlaihr, 2272

The party listens carefully to Morrice Barrett's briefing regarding the Mercenary Army of Hoar, Mask, and Garagos being dispatched from the city of Northsilver in northern Aredar. Barriltar Bhandraddon then clears his throat and informs everyone present that his sources loyal to Helm from Swampgate are reporting increased attacks by war parties bearing the mark of the Black Horde. While the number of Tortle and Human fighters are still considered adequate to maintain the defense of the town, the Orc raiding parties appear to be striking strategically in an effort to probe their defenses. Tortle scouts also indicate that there is another Orc force larger in number moving through the northern expanses of Territory of Thiyn Glos headed west. The Hawkeyes of Tharethiel have begun mobilizing and are moving to defend their border in what appears to be a coordinated invasion force. The Wood Elves feel confident they are capable of dealing with the threat. Barriltar finishes, and engages in quiet conversation with Morrice Barrett and King Alwyn Nede as conversations between individuals seated around the table erupt over the news.
Ceona clears the table where she is seated, grabs some parchment nearby, and begins writing a letter. She announces to everyone that she is writing a missive to the people of Verchei, and asks if anyone wants to include information on who to contact if the Vercheins wish to offer assistance. Ivoire de Montauban, who is seated next to Ceona, tells her that they have no contacts in Verchei. Ceona asks how is it possible, then, for Morrice Barrett to have information on the amassing Pirate Fleet. Morrice looks carefully around the table before stating that he has individuals embedded in various 'organizations', and leaves it at that. Ceona then tells Morrice, and everyone else, that if they wish to offer assistance, they should reach out to the local government of Kovrovsk is Verchei. Morrice tells her that they should take more after the dinner service is complete, and once they have a bit more privacy. Ceona saves the parchment and waits patiently to speak with Morrice about the matter later.
The party then overhears a conversation between Nyla Droverson of the Memorial Atheneum and Temple of Pursuance and Molara Starspell of the Lady's College of Daemarrel regarding receiving word from followers of Mystra in Breghdel that Drow attacks appear to be on the rise and seem to be intent on capturing the Twisted Tower. Nyla also tells Molara that the followers of Mystra in Breghdel are requesting to transfer artifacts out of Breghdel so that they may be brought to the Memorial Atheneum or to the Vault of Sages in the Lady's College for safe-keeping. Molara listens intently and tells Nyla that once she returns to Daemarrel, she will certainly begin preparations to assist in any way that she can.
After spending most of the evening listening to conversation, Tosra Korsk surprisingly leans forward and addresses Celindriel sitting across from her, telling her that it's not often that Moon Elves are seen out and about, and asks where Celindriel is from specifically. Celindriel informs her that she's from Graygate, and then asks if Tosra is familiar with it. Tosra admits that she has been to Graygate once, but only visited the Foreign Quarter. Tosra admits that she would love to go back if given the opportunity. She then asks Celindriel why she's so far from her homeland, and Celindriel reveals that she was sent to deliver a message. Tosra seems intrigued, but states that the message is probably important and isn't something she should probably be asking about. Celindriel nods and tells her she is certainly not able to discuss it at this exact time. Tosra nods and says she understands and won't pry any further, and then goes back to listening to the various other conversations.
Kasek catches Nyla Droverson's attention and tells her that he came to Sestatrea in hopes of traveling to Estrya, and to Breghdel specifically. He tells her he overheard what she was talking about earlier with Molara Starspell and asks if she's from there. She informs him that she is not from there, but followers of Mystra have special ways of staying within communication with one another, so she can easily receive and dispatch information to the followers in Breghdel. She tries to reassure Kasek that, while Drow numbers do appear to be on the rise in Breghdel, the city itself is well-defended on numerous fronts. She tells Kasek that they are not concerned, just merely taking precautions. Drow have always been interested in capturing the Twisted Tower because it is part of their heritage. It once belonged to the Dark Elves, before they became Drow and when they used to live on the surface of Abios. So it's always been a matter of pride, she assumes, that the Drow are interested in the Tower, and as a result they have always dealt with Drow attacks. The only reason they are discussing it now is because the number of attacks, and the size of the attacks appear to be rising, and they are merely taking the necessary precautions in ensuring artifacts under the control of the followers of Mystra are safe.
Kasek asks, if they are to travel to Breghdel, is there anyone there that he should contact on her behalf to lend assitance, or does Nyla need anything delivered? Nyla tells Kasek that they don't require any assistance at the moment, and they actually need items brought back to Sestatrea from Breghdel, not the other way around. Nyla tells Kasek that Estrya is frontier territory, and Breghdel is known to be a haven of adventurers seeking fame and fortune. While there are settled portions of Estrya, namely Breghdel and Shadehaven, anything roughly a 25 mile radius out from these settlements is considered frontier, and if they intend on traveling to Estrya, she warns him to be careful and mindful of the dangers. Kasek tells her that the isolation sounds wonderful, and she informs him that many do travel and settle in Breghdel and Shadehaven to live in solitude. Kasek thanks her for her time and disengages from conversation.
Tosra then leans over and engages Feadog in conversation by asking where he is from. Feadog tells her that he grew up on Otharia, but they had just come from Hirane where he, along with his friends, ended up saving the town. Tosra seems intrigued, and asks him for specifics. He tells her there was quite a bit of corruption and evil-doers, and they managed to take care of all of it. At this time, Firen Korsk leans in and begins listening to Feadog as he tells about their good deeds. Noticing that he's now drawing other people's attention, he elaborates by telling those listening that people in Hirane were stealing and poison was involved. He tells Tosra that one of his friends were poisoned and they had to save them as well! He tells her that because of their deeds of valor, they were invited to attend this dinner. Tosra seems impressed by his heroism, then asks if that means that he and his friends are sellswords. Feadog is unfamiliar with the term, and asks her to explain. She asks if that means that he and his friends travel the countryside seeking fame and fortune by solving problems. Feadog tells her he is actually a musician with the pan flute being his current instrument of choice, and maybe, if the conditions are right, he'll play a tune after dinner. Tosra smiles, but Feadog notices while glancing past her that her husband Firen Korsk seems to display signs of being somewhat enamored by Feadog. Tosra then inquires as to what part of Otharia Feadog is from. Feadog tells her he has traveled quite extensively, and he's from the ark-ill-pellashoo (and pronounces it in that way). She smiles somewhat, and says he must mean the Gorgon Archipelago, and she an emphasis on the correct pronunciation of the word. Feadog agrees, and Tosra turns to Firen and states that her and Firen were just talking about traveling throughout of Otharia and they heard it was lovely.
Tosra then asks how Feadog ended up in Laskea, and Feadog attempts to recall the series of events that led him to this point. Seeing him struggle with his memory, Ceona, Kasek, and Celindriel volunteer the missing information he has trouble recalling. After listening to everyone's input, she then asks if that means all of them (pointing at the group, except Levkaria Yumaia) have been traveling together. They each nod, and Feadog exclaims "Why yes! They call us the Heroes of Hirane!" Morrice Barrett chokes slightly on his food from hearing Feadog claim such a title, and Ivoire de Montauban gives Ceona an acknowledging nod in approval. Kasek asks if they happen to know Lord Andel Caldel by any chance. At the mention of Caldel's name, Kasek notices a slight reaction of recognition from the other nobleman at the table, but sees Tosra and Firen blink a few times at his mention. Kasek then looks over at Feadog and suggests Feadog tell them all about Andel Caldel, it's the best part of the story after all. Feadog asks if they would believe that the Lord of Hirane was in charge of the whole pirate and poison manufacturing operation that they had uncovered. Tosra seems surprised, and Feadog continues that they, unfortunately, had to dispatch Lord Caldel as a result.
Urmmir Sundergrass overhears the story and asks if they are talking about Hirane. Feadog says yes and that they had just come from there. Urmmir then asks if they ran into a dwarf named Aghad Longhelm by any chance. He states he is missing a deliveryman and missing a shipment of his ore that was bound for Hirane and is anxious for any news regarding it. Kasek leans over and whispers to him in dwarvish that they do have news about Aghad, but they want to discuss it with Urmmir in private. Urmmir nods and drops the subject for the time. Celindriel and Ceona attempt to get a read on Tosra to figure out if she's attempting to glean information from Feadog for nefarious purposes, but it seems Tosra is merely making small talk and being polite. Feadog then continues by telling Tosra that he's in the process of writing a song about the whole ordeal, he's just not quite sure when the song will be complete. Tosra then tells Feadog that if he's as much of a hero as he says he is, she's sure she'll be hearing the song throughout the land soon enough. Kasek tells Tosra that Feadog forgot to mention the best part of the story, however, and begins to tell Tosra how the party went to confront Lord Andel Caldel with the assistance of Berny Page, the Captain of the Hirane Town Guard. At this point, Barriltar Bhandraddon begins paying attention to the conversation at the mention of Berny Page. Kasek continues by tell Tosra that Lord Andel Caldel then took his own adviser as hostage. At this time, Padion Cûnor overhears the conversation, and asks Kasek if the adviser was Edraele Trisyra, and Kasek admits that it is. Padion asks how she is doing, and Kasek tells them that she ok now, even after having her throat slit. Both Padion and his wife Calendis Cûnor pale in worry at the statement. Kasek says that they managed to stop the bleeding, and Feadog then states that it was he who ended up saving her life. Calendis leans over and says "Thank you so much for saving her. It makes sense that a Half-Elf should be the one to save her life", and then Calendis gives Celindriel a somewhat dirty look. Celindriel quietly fumes at the statement under her breath, but chooses not to say anything. Feadog says that he is merely glad he was there to help, and of course his friends were instrumental in dealing with Lord Caldel, but now Berny Page needs help in protecting the town. Barriltar speaks up and states that they will dispatch Paladins to assist in the policing of Hirane, and then checks with Evios Ruel to verify that he will dispatch them the following day. Evios acknowledges the order, and reassures Barriltar that the order has been given, and they are set to leave tomorrow.
Tosra then asks for their full names, and they each proceed to give it to her. Tosra's eyes linger on Kasek a moment, and she repeats his name out loud "Kasek Bonebrewer?" Kasek nods and replies "from Mossband". She studies him a moment, then says "Very well. A pleasure to meet all of you". Celindriel returns the sentiment, and the guests return to finishing their desserts and drinks.

Urmmir's Ore - 11:15 PM - 13th of Vlaihr, 2272

Following the dinner service, the guests excuse themselves from the table and begin breaking off into smaller cliques to talk among themselves. As the party all assemble into a group, Levkaria immediately joins them looking slightly like a nervous lost puppy. During dinner service, Levkaria could be seen not knowing exactly how to behave, but she was observed watching others and mimicked the behavior of the other guests in attendance and managed to get through dinner without incident. Halfaelor Simms was also observed chatting her up for most of the dinner, and Jasmine Bek was also seen being somewhat protective and helping her, much to Ceona's delight. It is at this time that Urmmir Sundergrass approaches them and demands to know what information they have regarding Aghad Longhelm. Kasek informs him that Aghad was apparently taken hostage by a cult that had taken both Aghad and Urmmir's shipment of Ore into their possession, and Kasek also informs him that Aghad didn't survive the encounter. Urmmir angrily begins asking questions, "What cult? Are they all throughout Laskea? How many strong are they? Where's my ore?!?". Celindriel tells him that the ore shipment was stolen, and Urmmir begins turning red with anger and stuttering with rage. He takes a moment, slightly regains his composure and begins tugging on his beard ropes, and then says under his breath "I'm going to find out who stole my ore, and I'm gonna kill 'em!" Celindriel tries to calm him by stating that they slew every miscreant around that possibly had anything to do with the theft. Kasek tells Urmmir that the cult may also be responsible for all the other problems mentioned by people at the dinner, and both Ceona and Kasek suggests it may be in Urmmir's best interests to work with the other merchants and mobilize a force to go after the cult. Urmmir looks over at Halfaelor Simms and says that he might be ok to work with, but then Urmmir looks at Firen and admits to the group that he doesn't trust Firen at all. Urmmir states Firen just seems 'too friendly'. Urmmir then points to Feadog and says "I saw him looking at you...". Celindriel eyes Urmmir dubiously and says "I'm not sure I catch your meaning", and Urmmir blurts out "He likes men, okay! That's what I'm talking about." Celindriel states "Well, it may not be to your liking, but he's certainly allowed to." Urmmir frustratingly tells them he doesn't have a problem with Firen liking men, but the fact that Firen is married to Tosra and pursues men is what makes Urmmir have suspicions about Firen. The group ponders the statement a moment, having not previously considered that angle.
Kasek asks Urmmir if there is any way that they can help. Urmmir tells them it would be extremely helpful if they found his missing shipment. Kasek begins asking where Urmmir operates from, and Urmmir reveals that he sends shipments from Sestatrea to the various towns and hamlets throughout Laskea. He sends a shipment every two weeks to the towns of Daemarrel, Braedon, Stonepond, and Ula'ree. He sends one shipment every 4 weeks to Pella's Wish, and he doesn't ship to Pathstow at all. Celindriel asks how the ore arrives in Sestatrea, and Urmmir reveals that it arrives by ship from ports located in Geriland. Kasek asks what the size of the shipment is that Urmmir is missing, and he tells Kasek it's a load of 100 bars of various ore. Celindriel asks if it's just the one shipment, and Urmmir says that he's actually down a total of seventeen shipments, and it's starting to get too much for him to continue business. Urmmir tells the group that he's tried petitioning the King and Queen, but he's not confident they have a handle on the situation, and most of the other Nobles in Laskea have their hands full dealing with local issues in their own towns. Ceona asks if he's tried appealing to the Order of the Golden Lion, and Urmmir states that there are only a handful of members and he doesn't feel like they would be enough. He muses that he feels like Laskea is beginning to turn lawless, and no respecting dwarf would be interested in selling his ore or gems here in the future.
Kasek states that they will most likely be traveling south after leaving Sestatrea, and they'll keep an eye out for the ore. Urmmir tells Kasek that, as a dwarf, he knows the Sundergrass emblem. He tells Kasek each bar is stamped with the emblem, and if they find the ore, they can either return it to him in Sestatrea, or secure it and send word to him so he may collect it. If the group manages to do that, he will make sure to reward them handsomely. The group thanks him, and he walks away. The party begins to engage in small talk among themselves when suddenly Levkaria says "Oh no, no no, here he comes" and she ducks behind Ceona, hiding. Ceona immediately takes a defensive stance and begins looking around protectively and spots Halfaelor Simms sauntering up to the group. He spots Levkaria and says "Ah there's me darling devil woman, how are ye my lovely?". Ceona immediately gets in his face telling him how rude he's being. He peers up at her a moment, then states "My aren't you a tall one, and beautiful pale skin as well!". She stares at him and comments "Aren't you a short one", and he responds "That I am" and waggles his eyebrows at her. She gives the rest of the group a withering look as she notices him slightly swaying while standing in their presence. He says "So, are you her caretaker? No, you her mother? No wait, you can't be her mother...can you? Well, at any rate, I think she's lovely, and I just wanted to thank you all for your services in Hirane." He then asks if his hops and barley shipment is located in Hirane, and the group nods and tells him it's located in the Warehouse under the protection of Berny Page. Ceona tells him he should have another drink to celebrate the recovery of his shipment. He quietly tells her the drinks here at the dinner party are shite, but if they are so inclined, they are welcome to visit his Brewery and he'll be happy to give them a tour of the place.
Kasek perks up at the mention of the Brewery and asks for more details. Halfaelor tells him the brewery is the famous James' Gate Brewery, named after James' Gate at the eastern-most entrance to Sestatrea. He explains he'll be happy to give them a taste of a new batch of Browncoal Stout he's been working on. Kasek exclaims that he is extremely interested, and reveals himself to also be a brewer. Halfaelor shakes his hand as they exchange introductions. Halfaelor asks what it is that Kasek likes to brew, and Kasek says that he's more or less a 'travel' brewer, which means specializing in quick alcohol production -- a useful skill in remote places. Kasek reveals he likes to brew whiskey, and can typically have a batch ready to go in two-week's time. Halfaelor looks shrewdly at Kasek and tells him that he could reveal to him a method where he can make a batch of whiskey in a week's time, not two. Kasek is incredulous, but fascinated and indicates he is interested in learning. Halfaelor thinks a moment, and then states that they could potentially call it a just reward for delivering his goods back to him. He tells Kasek to visit the Brewery with his friends, and he'll teach him the method. Halfaelor spits in his hand and offers it to Kasek, and Kasek shakes, sealing the deal. Halfaelor smiles and excuses himself from the group, and walks away staggering slightly and strikes up a conversation with Firen and Tosra Korsk who are talking with Lutjen and Avelyn Semanis.

Celindriel meets with the Queen

Kasek turns and asks the group if they shouldn't take this opportunity to meet with the King and Queen. The group looks over and sees the King, Queen, Morrice Barret, Barriltar Bhadraddon, the Lady-in-waiting Jasmine Bek, Bram Denskem, and the food-taster Hadrian Feldhan all in a group nearby talking quietly to themselves. Noticing them looking, Morrice peels off from the group and approaches them while at the same time the Queen is observed excusing herself from her group, and exits the room through an ornate door off to the right of the thrones. Morrice approaches and politely asks if everyone is enjoying themselves, and then asks if Celindriel would like to have an audience with the Queen at this time. Celindriel nods, and Morrice asks if she wishes to meet with the Queen alone, or as a group. Feadog blurts out that he's certainly interested in meeting her, and Morrice stares at him a moment before Celindriel tells Morrice that her friends are trustworthy and can be in attendance. He says "Very well, please follow me", and he leads them over to the same door the Queen was observed leaving through earlier.
They pass through the door and find the next room to be a fine antechamber of sorts with comfortable carpeting, couches, and expensive art hanging on the walls. The Queen is seen sitting in a royal-looking chair waiting patiently as they enter. After the group has filed in, Morrice closes the door and introduces Celindriel as Lady Celindriel Bryleth of Aennamar to Queen Yevidri Aerilaya-Nede. The Queen nods at Celindriel and says "I hear you have something of importance for me, is that correct?" Celindriel nods and states "I was sent by your sister, my Matron, Lady Cînith Aerilaya." Yevidri smiles and asks Celindriel how her sister is. Celindriel tells her that she's busy, as always, but is doing well. Yevidri nods, and then asks what it is her sister wanted to tell her. Celindriel tells the Queen that her Matron wanted her to deliver a letter into her hands. Celindriel also states that her Matron gave her leave to read the letter. The Queen nods, takes the letter from Celindriel and begins reading. Morrice inches a little closer, obviously interested in the missive, but keeps a respectful distance as the Queen reads. The Queen's demeanor grows slightly pensive, and she passes the letter to Morrice to read. She waits until Morrice has a moment to finish reading the letter before taking it and placing it on a small table beside her. Morrice asks the Queen if they should discuss this openly, and the Queen looks at Celindriel and asks "Shall we? In front of your friends?"
Celindriel states "We can talk about this openly. I believe they are trustworthy people, and they have proven themselves to be trustworthy, but I have not shared this information with them until now." The Queen looks at the rest of the group and asks them how much they actually know about their traveling companion, indicating to Celindriel. Feadog blurts out that she's a Moon Elf! Ceona states that she's good at fighting, and Kasek admits that they don't know much. The Queen then asks how much the individuals know about an organization called the Ivorylights. The group looks puzzled and confused as Celindriel's eyes grow wide over realizing how much the Queen was going to divulge. Feadog merely states that it sounds expensive, whatever it is. The Queen explains that the Moon Elves of Aennamar have a secret organization known as the Ivorylights. In most cases, they would be considered a Thieve's Guild, but the Moon Elves act more like an intelligence gathering extension of the Aennamar government. The Ivorylights take it upon themselves to guard all of Abios against the Undead of Telethas. She explains that "Telethas used to be the Moon Elf, well, our homeland. Centuries ago, and we don't know why or for what purpose, but in our Capital City of Ghosmere, the Undead started rising and came close to exterminating all of us. At that time we were considered Dark Elves, but we succeeded in escaping to the Border Islands of Aennamar and managed to rebuild our civilization from Graygate."
She continues "The swamps of Thiyn Glos prevent the Undead from penetrating into the continent of Abios through the protection of guardians dedicated to the worship of Helm, and the Human and Tortle population of Swampgate keep them in check. Most of of Telethas and Thiyn Glos is a giant swamp, and by the time any Undead make their way to Swampgate, there may be one singular Undead creature every two full moons or so, and they are quickly dispatched. However, the Moon Elves take it upon themselves to make landfall in Telethas and try to gather intelligence on the Undead and their forces, and they do so at great loss. The organization that does this is the Ivorylights, and your companion here is a member of their order." The Queen gestures to Celindriel.
The group stares a moment looking at Celindriel and trying to process this new information. Kasek speaks up first and asks Celindriel if she's ever been to Telethas. Celindriel admits that she has, and Kasek then asks why she's here in Sestatrea. The Queen interrupts and states "She's here to deliver this", and holds up the letter Celindriel had delivered. The Queen then hands the letter to Kasek to read, and says "This letter was written by the Matron of Aennamar, which is the Moon Elf version of a Queen, who also happens to be my sister." Kasek takes the letter and begins to read it aloud.
Dearest Sister,

I write to bring you words of warning. Our Priestesses have foreseen a great evil setting foot on the continent of Abios and schemes to bring chaos to the land. I have dispatched the Ivorylights in search of more answers on what these omens entail, however all our efforts thus far have yielded no additional information.

One bit of disturbing news that we have uncovered is the Undead of Telethas seem to be on the move north. It will take them some time before they become an imminent threat, it is nonetheless to be taken as an absolute and immediate threat to our lands.

I am sending word to Acilidan and Tharethiel. I would ask that you seek friends in the good kingdoms of Aldywnne, Estrya and Mil Durahl. You and I both know if this scourge begins an attack from the South, the Kingdoms of the The Emerald Basin will move to take advantage, the Zhentarim especially.

Please, implore your husband to dispatch envoys immediately. We will do all we can.

Love,
Cînith

A Queen's Plea

The Queen takes the letter back from Kasek, folds it and puts it on the table beside her. Kasek says "So we have Orcs, gangs, Undead to the South, Pirates massing in the far east...it's a good time to be a Head of State." She nods and rubs her pregnant belly. She looks at Celindriel and says "If all of your friends are as trustworthy as you say, and of course after hearing of your accolades in Hirane, I can't think of anyone as mobile or trustworthy to act as my envoys on these Kingdoms." She gestures to Kasek "You yourself said you were interested in visiting Breghdel, well we have great need to send word to Breghdel, and to Aldywnne, and to Mil Durahl." She looks at Ceona and states "Which takes you close to Verchei as well." Ceona nods as she quietly muses. Kasek then asks "How well does it pay?" The Queen glances at Morrice, and Morrice states "Well, your Majesty, we do tend to offer fairly good rewards for such a thing." Ceona states that "Some of us may be interested in different types of payment." The Queen thinks about it a moment and then states "As a reward for your service, if you complete this and help in the venture, as well as assist in any need these Kingdoms may require, I can offer you land within the Kingdom of Laskea, a Knighthood, and I promise we will establish a formal delegation to the Refugee Clans of Verchei. But only after the task is complete."
Kasek thinks about it a moment, and asks "What specifically is the task? Just to deliver messages to these Kingdoms?" The Queen asks that the group hand delivers her messages into the hands of the Ruling Members of Breghdel in Estrya, Ambermoor in the Territory of Aldwynne, and Thruin'Tor in the Kingdom of Mil Durahl. She tells the group that if any of these Rulers have a need, or require a service themselves, she implores the group to also see to it that they are helped. This will only build trust and further strengthen an alliance between these nations and Laskea -- that is part of the arrangement. She tells the party that she cannot stress how important it is to deliver these messages, and secure allies in the likely coming fight against the Undead Horde. This isn't just a national problem, this is a dire situation for all denizens of Abios, and if they do not succeed, there will be nothing left to come home to for any of us.
Feadog says "Sir Feadog Mhor...has a nice ring to it!" Kasek looks less sure, and asks the Queen what exactly comes along with being granted a Knighthood. The Queen states that they will become landowners, which grants them the right to collect tithes from their citizens. The party looks somewhat confused, and the Queen asks if they understand what it means to be landowners. Kasek says "I don't understand what it means to own land anywhere", and Celindriel tells Kasek that it means they will become Landed Gentry. The Queen nods at Celindriel's understanding and states that "As Landed Gentry, you will have citizens under you that work for you and pay taxes to you. You will have a Keep, and individuals that serve and work for you." Feadog asks "Where is Gentry?" And the Queen shakes her head, just saying "No...you don't, no". Morrice steps in and says "We'll talk about it later." The Queen then says "I did hear of a recent Lord vacancy opening up recently in Hirane after all...". Feadog asks if the Queen has heard the whole story, and the group then descends into quibbling about the details. The Queen eventually tells the group to take the necessary time they require to think about agreeing to this task, but time is of the essence.
Ceona states "There is nothing I would like more than to help you with this. I will go to the ends of the earth to complete this mission, and I don't need to think about it." Kasek says "I feel the same, but with much less passion." The Queen studies Kasek a moment, and then asks "What drives you?" Kasek says "I'm satisfied with the proposal. I like gold, and I like comfort, and I believe you've offered both." Feadog states "I will say, if we do this which I think we will because I like the idea of owning land, wherever it is, but we will need some travelling money...money for travel expenses." The Queen asks how much they require, and the group begins looking at one another somewhat perplexed and feeling put on the spot. The Queen merely says "If you need traveling money, we can certainly help, within reason of course." The group nods and Ceona says that they will discuss what they need, and talk it over with Barriltar. The Queen nods, rises and then walks over and gives Celindriel a hug. She tells Celindriel "Thank you for bringing this to me" and Celindriel tells her she was only doing her duty. The Queen tells Celindriel that she will update her Sister on Celindriel's business, and that she knows she'll approve of her actions. The Queen turns to the group and says "Thank you so much, it means a lot to the Kingdom of Laskea and all citizens of Abios, good and bad. There are bad people in this world, but no one deserves the fate of becoming Undead." Kasek mutters under his breath "I don't know about no one deserving it." The Queen smiles and says "Yes, but, with you being from Mossband, him being from Leeside, and her being from Verchei, I'm sure you can understand there are good people in each of your countries...not all necessarily, but there are good people. I'm looking at examples of them right now."

The Spymaster

Kasek thanks the Queen for her trust and confidence, and hopes that it isn't misplaced. The Queen nods, turns and looks at Morrice, who bows and then begins walking the group back out into the throne room. As they exit the antechamber he closes the door behind them and pulls the group off to the side. He tells them in a hushed voice "I am the Principle Secretary to the King and Queen, but I'm also the Spymaster for the Kingdom of Laskea. Please keep word with us. There will be contacts in each town, and Celindriel should be able to find them. Please check in, let us know how you're doing. If we are able, we will help if we can, but please keep us informed so we can make the necessary arrangements here if we need to. If it looks like you're getting into trouble, let us know. If it looks like something is becoming undone, or going unfinished, let us know. We're dealing in dangerous times right now as you know with everything on the move right now, so we need to be informed so we can play our moves accordingly. The armies of the Emerald Basin are dangerous, and we cannot hope to match their strength of arms in the field."
Ceona asks Morrice if it is true that they don't currently have any contacts in Verchei, and Morrice admits that they do not. She offers him an opportunity to gain contacts in Verchei, but Morrice states that by the time they dispatch a ship with someone headed in that direction, it will be close to the start of winter which makes the passage prohibitive, not to mention increased Pirate raids in that area currently. He mentions that taking a Northern Route is not a viable option, but they could send someone across Lyetia. But given the details from his intelligence operatives, Lyetia is about to be invaded by a mercenary army, which makes it dangerous to attempt. He mentions that if they're going to Mil Durahl, the could possibly check with the dwarves and see if there is an underground option to traveling to Verchei. He says maybe they could send someone to establish contacts, but if he were to dispatch someone, he seriously doubts they'll make it. Ceona nods and begins digesting the information.
Kasek tells Morrice that they should get some sleep. Morrice nods, and tells Kasek that they should speak with Barriltar before heading out. Morrice walks the group over to Barriltar who is standing near the large rose-patterned glass window overlooking the city of Sestatrea. Morrice quietly brings Barriltar up to speed on everything that transpired with the Queen. Barriltar listens intently, and then asks that the group meet with him in the morning to go over planning and outfitting. In the meantime, Barriltar asks that the group remain a moment with him and allow some of the other guests to depart so they can remain inconspicuous. Morrice mentions that the party will be ending soon, so it'll only be a few more moments but it's a good idea to not rush out. Feadog asks if there is possibly any lodging within the Temple for them this evening, but Celindriel states that they want to remain below-profile as it were to not draw unwanted attention to their sudden status rise. Barriltar mentions that he would prefer, given the new information, that they stay at the Ivory Pantry Inn. The group begins to balk at the cost of lodging at the Inn, and Barriltar states that, with the importance of their task, the crown would put up the money to lodge them at Deldrach Vajyre's establishment. Kasek asks if there is any chance Barriltar could scribe them a letter indicating such, and Barriltar says if they can wait a little bit, he'll be happy to do so. Feadog excitedly exclaims "I'll wait all night for that letter!"

11:45 PM - 13th of Vlaihr, 2272

The group stands with Barriltar a moment and stares out the window overlooking Sestatrea. Barriltar says to no one in particular "It's a beautiful view", and Morrice turns to the group and says "I hope you can look at everything we have before us and know how important it is for all of us that you succeed in your task." The group continues to look out over the city, and begin to notice an orange glow begin to flicker from a building near the docks. Morrice and Barriltar also see it and furrow their brow a moment, when another glow suddenly appears next to it. Morrice turns and calls to Nyla Droverson, who approaches and looks out the window at the flicker with guidance from Morrice. After a moment, she exclaims "That's the Memorial Atheneum and the Temple of Persuance!" She turns to the King and Queen and says "Forgive me your majesties, I must leave and find out what's happening." Barriltar stops her and says "Wait a moment, and we'll teleport down there with you." She nods and goes back to looking nervously out the window at the orange flames in the distance. Barriltar turns to Evios Ruel and says “Assemble your men and order them to lend assistance. Once given, come with us”. Evios nods and rushes from the room. Barriltar turns to Ivoire de Montauban and says “Gather the Golden Lions and let’s get down there and find out what’s happening. I want you, Evios, Nyla and four others to gather for us to head down there. Have Cefri bring the others immediately.” She nods and also rushes from the room. Barriltar then excuses himself to the King and Queen and leaves the throne room followed by Nyla Droverson.
Morrice approaches the King and engages in quiet conversation close to the King’s ear with the Chamberlain hovering nearby. The King shakes his head after a moment and holds his palm up to Morrice, and then mutters some words to the Chamberlain. The Chamberlain turns to address the room. “Lords and Ladies, it would seem an emergency has arisen within the city. We would ask if you would all be so kind as to retire for the evening. Please follow me, and I will be happy to escort you all to your awaiting carriages.” Bram Denskem then moves to the throne room entrance and waits for everyone to assemble. The guests all begin to assemble and gather up their belongs, stopping briefly to thank the King and Queen for the dinner before proceeding to stand behind the Chamberlain. The King, Queen, and Lady-in-waiting Jasmine Bek make their way next to the window looking out over the town with Morrice standing beside the King talking in a concerned manner. Kasek rushes over to Morrice and offers his help. Morrice shakes his head and tells him that the Golden Lions will handle it. Kasek incredulously says "You don't want our help?" Morrice reassures him "The Golden Lions can handle it, and you have an important mission. I'm sure they can handle it, it's just a fire." The group begrudgingly accepts his rationale, but Feadog asks if there is any possibility Morrice could write that letter so they can stay at the Ivory Pantry Inn this evening. Morrice tells Feadog that now is not the time. Meanwhile, all the guests have assembled next to the entrance to the throne room next to Bram Denskem, who is clearing his throat expectantly at the group members to join him. The party joins Bram, who then leads the group from the throne room.

12:00 AM - 14th of Vlaihr, 2272

The group descends the stairs and begins walking down the hallway leading to the entrance of the keep. Over top of the chamberlain's desk, all the members of the Golden Lions, along with Barriltar Bhandraddon and Evios Ruel, can be seen as Nyla and Cefri finish an incantation, and all members instantly disappear in a flash of blue-purple light. At that exact moment, from somewhere within the chamber, a clock can be heard chiming indicating the time is now 12:00 AM. After a few chimes, two separate females can be heard screaming in horror from the throne room. Morrice is heard yelling “We need help! Somebody!” Two guards positioned at the front entrance of the keep break into a dead run headed towards the throne room as Bram Denskem turns and runs back as well. The Marquess and Baron immediately turn and begin to follow Bram, followed by Mayor Crouse. The group turns and rushes back upstairs, and the remaining guests follow, crowding in behind as they make their way back upstairs.
The group enters the throne room to see Hadrian Feldhan convulsing on the floor next to the wait staff door where he had previously been. Looking over to the large window, Queen Yevidri is seen cradling King Alwyn Nede as he lies convulsing on the floor. Jasmine Bek can be seen holding her mouth in horror and slowly backing away from the scene sobbing as Queen Yevidri looks around begging “Somebody help!” Morrice is kneeling beside her, trying to hold the King still. The guests all gather near the entrance to the throne room trying to stay out of the way as guards rush to help the King, except for Marquess Elmorn Renan who turns and rushes from the throne room upon seeing the condition of the King. Additional guards enter the room with their weapons drawn and form a protective circle around the King.
Celindriel yells out, asking where Barriltar's office is located as he has a vial of antidote to cure this poison. At the same time, Feadog begins playing on his pan flute attempting to cast Cure Wounds. As Feadog finishes playing, the spell fizzles and dissipates. Upon hearing Celindriel, Morrice turns to one of the guards standing nearby and tells him to search Barriltar's office for the antidote. The guard rushes from the throne room as Morrice turns and attempts to control the King's convulsions. Kasek asks if there is anyone able to Teleport him into the city, and Morrice tells Kasek that everyone with that ability unfortunately just teleported from the Keep. At this time, the King stops convulsing, lifeless, with black ichor beginning to stream from his tear ducts and nostrils -- a calling card of Midnight Tears (Silver Raven Blend). The room goes eerily quiet save for the sounds of Queen Yevidri and Jasmine Bek openly sobbing. The remaining guests all look on in shock as to what just transpired.

Damage Control

As the group looks around in stunned silence, they notice that it doesn't appear all the guests are currently in attendance. Feadog leaves the room and looks to see if anyone else is standing around. Kasek and Feadog both realize that Marquess Elmorn Renan (who ran from the room upon seeing the King convulsing) as well as Firen and Tosra Korsk are not present. Kasek attempts to try and track Elmorn Renan using his Ranger skills, but doesn't have much success as the floor is polished marble. Kasek heads down the stairs in an attempt to find Elmorn Renan, and goes out the front entrance of the Keep. Across the courtyard, Kasek spots Elmorn Renan with a weapon in hand rushing towards the front entrance of the Keep with approximately 20+ guards following closely behind that are adorned in Plate Armor. The guards look to be more capable than the standard Sestatrean Guard that Kasek has seen previously, and it is assumed they are either elite guards, or trained soldiers. Kasek moves to stand aside to let them pass, but the guards grab him and command that he return to the throne room immediately, and pushes him in that direction. He doesn't resist, and proceeds as instructed.
Back in the throne room, Ceona attempts to leave the room to find her possessions that she brought (her shield, armor, and weapon). As she begins to leave, she is met by Elmorn Renan, Kasek, and the 20+ guards ascending the stairs. The guards begin immediately blocking off the exit and demand everyone returns to the throne room. Ceona obeys, and her and Kasek return to stand beside Celindriel, Levkaria and Feadog. Morrice turns to the guards and demands sharply “Protect the Queen at all costs!” The guards shout out a warcry in unison and lower their spears in a protective circle around the Queen. Morrice then turns to a guard obviously of higher rank and says “You! Find Barriltar Bhandraddon and have him return here immediately, we need his services. Quick!”. The guard salutes and rushes from the room. Morrice turns to Bram Denskem and commands “Chamberlain, escort the Queen and the Lady-in-waiting to her quarters until we can get a handle on the situation! Guards, protect her with your lives!” The guards shout out another warcry in unison as Bram bows, visibly shaken, and proceeds over to the Queen and attempts to help her up. She stands as gracefully as she can muster with tears streaming down her eyes, and follows Bram from the room with guards in formation before and after her. Morrice turns to an ornate looking guard in full plate and says “Captain, secure the keep and the city. No one leaves the premises or the city until we find out what’s going on! I want a thorough search of the keep for any sign of an assassin, that includes the guests in attendance!” The Captain responds “Yes sir! You men...”, gesturing to a group of guards standing in formation, “...fan out, I want every man and woman searching for this bastard. Toss everything if you have to, I want nothing left unsearched.” The Captain turns to a different group of guards, “You men, secure the guests and post sentries at all exits. No one leaves without direct orders from myself or the Secretary.” The guards ordered to secure the guests line up forming a ring around the guests who have now gathered near the entrance to the throne room. The other formation of guards rush from the room and echoing commands and shouts can be heard coming from different rooms within the keep as the guards begin rousing members of the staff. A small group of guards begin approaching the party with their weapons at the ready.

Assassin at Large

Celindriel tries to maintain eyesight on the entrance to the throne room in hopes the guard sent for the antidote returns. Instead of the guard she's hoping for, more guards and soldiers enter with weapons drawn, and the throne room now has approximately 35 to 40 guards in attendance. Morrice walks over to the group looking shaken, and Kasek tells him "I believe you need to search for and secure Firen and Tosra Korsk because we were leaving as a group, and they didn't return to the throne room with us." Morrice tells the five of them to follow him. He turns to the Captain and instructs him to follow as well. The group follows along with the Captain and several guards as Morrice descends the stairs from the throne room back into the hallway leading to several rooms. He pauses a moment looking around, and then demands that the Captain has his men fan out and begin searching all the rooms. The Captain salutes and begins ordering his men, who all rush and systematically begin searching each room on the first floor of the Keep. Morrice stands patiently watching the guards search, and giving off the demeanor of someone handily in charge of the situation, but the group detects he is also scared and somewhat on the verge of being overwhelmed.
After a moment, a guard yell out "Sir! Over here!". The Captain runs down, then turns and yells for the Secretary to come look. Morrice and the group rush down to peer behind a door that leads into a 15 ft wide by 20 ft long hallway that leads to another door. On the floor in front of the second door is a man dressed in heavy full plate armor and a large two-handed sword lying dead on the floor with blood covering the floor. Ceona turns the man over and recognizes the symbol of the Order of the Golden Lion displayed prominently on his surcoat, but doesn't recognize him as one of the members she met previously. She checks for wounds and finds four stabs wounds on his back that looked like they were skillfully placed to pierce his armor, and his throat is also slit. Morrice curses under his breath upon seeing the dead Golden Lion, and the commands the Captain to open the door.
The Captain checks the door and finds it unlocked, and proceeds to open it. The door opens into a large chamber that is constructed with stands of seating lining either side of the room. At the end of the room are three pedestals, with the center pedestal rising higher than the others. The group recognizes the room as a courtoom of sorts. Along the far edge of the room are windows that line the wall above the top row of seats that appear to open out to the outside of the Keep. The windows are all closed except for the one furthest from the entrance into the room, which is opened outwards. Guards immediately begin rushing into the room and begin searching for any intruder. Kasek rushes over to where the window is opened and finds a rope dangling from it. He begins climbing as Morrice demands to know what he's doing. Kasek states that it's quite obvious the assassin or assassins escaped using this rope. Morrice encourages him to proceed and Kasek begins making his way up with Celindriel following behind. As Kasek reaches the window, which is approximately 30 ft above the floor, he peers out and sees a small garden and the southern-end of the stables. He spots guards surrounding the stables, but no one else. Peering down from the window, Kasek detects what looks to be some sort of indentation in the grass perhaps where the assassins landed after leaping from the window. Kasek reports what he sees, and Morrice turns and orders everyone to head out to the garden behind the stables. Everyone rushes from the room and begins heading to the front entrance of the Keep to make their way to the garden.
As the group approaches the small area behind the stables, the guards begin to produce torches to light up the area. Celindriel tries to hold the guards and Morrice back in order to allow Kasek to investigate the tracks in the hopes of him being able to pick up the trail. Kasek examines the grass and sees where two individuals leapt from the window and landed, tumbled, and then stood up and rushed over to a grate on the back of the stables that looks like it was hastily put back in place. Kasek immediately rushes over and pops the grate. With one foot into the hole, Morrice stops him and says "Wait, that goes down into the sewers. You're not even armed or have armor!" The group looks at their fine outfits they had rented from Lord & Tailor. Morrice asks the group what they require, and as the group begins to undress to protect their valuable clothing, the guards return with weapons and armor for them. Kasek, not wanting to strip, chooses to keep his clothing on and places the armor on over it. After taking a few moments to properly outfit themselves, the group lowers themselves one by one into the sewers. Upon Ceona's insistence, Levkaria is told to wait at the Temple of Torm's Coming for their return and leaves her behind as they descend. Morrice peers down into the sewer entrance after them and tells them he'll work on posting guards at all main sewer entrances and exits in hopes of cutting the assailants off. The group assures him they're fine, and begin drudging their way into the sewers as Morrice places the grate back into position.

Into the Sewers

Kasek lights a torch and the party begins cautiously following the tunnel they're in. The party eventually reaches an intersection where the tunnel opens to a circular room that branches off into three separate tunnels. The tunnel immediately to their left is raised about ten feet above and has water falling from it into the main sewer stream. The other two tunnels look to be viable options where their enemies may have gone. As Kasek examines the stone walkway along the walls of the circular chamber, he detects fresh blood on the walls. He also detects a set of bloody footprints that proceeds off into the tunnel to their left. The party decides to follow the footprints which grow fainter after about 30 ft, and walk for a bit of time before they come to another intersection where two tunnels merge into the main sewer tunnel they are walking down. Along the walls where the tunnels merge, they see plants growing. Feadog examines the plants in an effort to identify them, when suddenly several tendrils reach out and stike him. The party encounters three Violet Fungus that have apparently thrived at the opening of the southern-entering tunnels, and enter into initiative at this time.

Violent Fungus Battle (Audio 02:17:00 - 02:32:50)

The party dispatches the plants handily, and upon investigating the creature, they will find a piece of torn fabric from Firen Korsk's clothes stuck in one of the creature's tendrils. The party continues down the main tunnel they were previously traversing and remain alert to danger. The party eventually comes to yet another intersection where a tunnel is now on their left, right, and center. Along the walls in this area are innocuous-looking vines that conceal the stone walls, and the group takes a moment to decide which direction to proceed. The party decides to continue straight and after a few moments of traveling, they begin to heard strange clacking and clattering noises as well as small splashes in the water. Kasek extinguishes the torch, and the party proceeds stealthily to investigate. As they approach an intersection, they see 8 small creatures that look like wingless-dragons scampering around in the water and along the stone walkways, and currently picking over 5 corpses. Feadog recognizes the corpses wearing uniforms consistent with the Sestatrean City Guards. The creatures begin to drag the corpses off into an attaching tunnel. Kasek waits until most are around the corner and then fires his crossbow at them. The party enters initiative.

Kobold Battle (Audio 02:42:50 - 02:57:42)

The party manages to surprise the Kobolds and tears through their numbers rather quickly. Two Kobolds end up fleeing for their lives, and Kasek attempts to speak to one while keeping it at swordpoint. Kasek successfully intimidates the creature, which drops its dagger. Kasek asks what the Kobold is doing, and the Kobold merely states that he's eating. Kasek demands to know what happened to the guards, and the Kobold states that they found them this way. Celindriel investigates the dead guards and finds them riddled with wicked-looking piercing wounds that makes Celindriel think they were hooked blades. It's obvious that the Kobolds did not slay the guards. Kasek knocks the Kobold unconscious and places him on the stone walkway. The group finds 5 slings, 5 daggers, and 5 sets of ruined padded armor from the dead guards. Surprisingly the guard's weapons are absent. The group is left deciding between two tunnels to proceed down, the one in which the Kobolds were dragging the corpses, and the one yet traveled down to their right. The party decides to head to the right, and eventually come to another intersection.
Kasek attempts to check for tracks, and finds several footprints traveling in the direction of the tunnel they had just come. He doesn't recognize the tracks as being human, and can't make a determination as to what species they are. The party decides to back-track and follow the multiple tracks. The trail takes them back to the circular room with the vines covering the stone walls, and the tracks head off to the party's right (west). The party continues to follow the tracks west where they come to a fork in the tunnels. The tracks head to the right tunnel (north-west), and the party proceeds. At a certain point, the tracks disappear at the base of a smaller tunnel that is higher up on the wall that is large enough for a person to stand up in. The party climbs up into the smaller tunnel and follow it back. They come to a dead end and find a ladder leading up about 15 feet to a wooden trap door. At the base of the ladder are three sets of manacles chained to the wall with bits of stringy flesh still clinging to them. Across from the manacles, the party notices a change in the stonework that appears to look like an object disguised to resemble the surrounding stonework. The object appears to be slightly pulsing. While trying to determine their next move, Celindriel makes an educated guess that they're probably in the Elven District. Celindriel tries to determine if the 'object' is actually a trap, and determines that it doesn't appear to be a trap, but does appear to be something alive and breathing. Celindriel draws her bow and attacks. The party enters into initiative.

Grick Battle (03:15:00 - 03:39:20)

The party eventually dispatches the Grick, and Feadog gets Celindriel back on her feet after being knocked unconscious by the creature by casting Healing Word. The party then hears voices and shouts coming from the other side of the wooden trap door.
