Atlas Homing Chaingun
The Atlas is a chaingun built by the Drimax United Systems of the Hyperion Federation. It is notable for its bullets which can home in an the target. The bullets have small thrust vectored rocket jets on the rear and targets are constantly being tracked by a small Quantum Computing Device within the weapon itself. It also floats with 4 parts.
The Atlas was designed after the requirement to hit a small, extremely fast target. As these sorts of targets typically make sacrifices in armour and shield protection, the weapon was not required to be extremely powerful. Its inventor has been quite creative in the weapon itself, so that person ended up as an Apprentice War-Engineer.
Gyrojets fired by the Atlas have an extremely large, non-infinite acceleration. They can be avoided, but the sheer velocity and acceleration can easily make them excellent as anti missile gyrojets. Like many other weapons that fire physical rounds, they can be modified with one of many different types of warheads. For example, photon blast rounds, neutron QCD matter sabots, quark-gluon plasma rounds. Each different warhead can serve different roles, even performing an anti-heavy role with quark-gluon plasma to an average effectiveness for a HF weapon.
The Atlas does have a significant shortcomming though. It is notably vulnerable to some forms of ewar, such as jamming its guidance system. Even a technology similar to flares can be used to defend against the Atlas, if used effectively. Although they are an extremely effective anti swarm weapon, they are often used alongside other weapons with a similar role for this reason, such as the Oblivion Assault Gun. A very large number of them can be mounted on Sentinel - Class Flak Destroyers, making those ships excellent area denial ships.
