Clay Steppes
The name of this grassland comes from the reddish soil that resists the rains that seem to fall every afternoon, breaking the humidity of summer. Instead, the water pools overnight until it evaporates the next day, baking the earth back into hard ground. Tall grasses, sparsely spaced, are one of the few plants that thrive on these plains that stretch from the River Oz in Drakkar to the Redstone River in the Hinterlands. Small stands of spiked trees dot the landscape, mostly in areas of slight depression where the water pools.
Few animals make the Steppes their home, with wild dogs and vultures seemingly the most prominent. Small herds of antelope wander the plains, constantly seeking new pastures in which to raze. The cattle and horse herds of the Hinterlands in the eastern steppes have, however, taken the best grazing lands and greatly reduced their numbers.
