Bugs' Jar Building / Landmark in Tarien | World Anvil

Bugs' Jar

Situated in a one of the nicer residential neighborhoods of Rathgar, home to moderately successful merchants and craftsmen, the Bugs' Jar is small tavern built into the basement of a wide, three story, stone and mortar building. The first floor holds a tailor's and clothing merchant and the upper two are private residences, the top owned by the famous, explorer, Antonio Brenkin. Now well into his retirement, Antonio spends many evenings in the tavern's cramped common room. With a half dozen tables and small, cherry wood bar that has but five stools, the tavern can only hold about thirty customers comfortably. As its clientele are mostly regulars from the neighborhood, it rarely has half that many at any one time. Few as tall as Antonio ever feel truly comfortable as the beams that support the upper stories crisscross the room, causing many a patron to hit his head.

The most unusual feature of the bar are the shelves at both ends of the room - wall to wall as one might find in a library. Instead of books, however, they hold glass jars of all shapes and sizes, each containing a different type of insect, floating in some sort of yellowish liquid.
A close second, in terse of eccentricity, are the Bugs' Jar's hours. Otto, the proprietor and as far as most can tell only staff, opens the tavern in the early evening each day, closing when the last of the regulars stumble home. While this is not unusual, his morning hours - reserved for the few guests that let a bed in one of the two bunk rooms on the second floor - begin with the rising sun and end shortly thereafter. Otto expect all guests to break their fasts early and then leave the inn. He locks the door behind the last guest that leaves and no one is allowed to return until early evening - even if they have paid several nights stay. Most assume that Otto uses the time to tidy and prepare meals for the evening rush, but a few patrons claim to have seen a myserious red headed woman visiting the tavern during its midmorning closure.
