Soldier's Tax

Hinterland Tax

A less famous claus of the Hinterland Accords, the Soldier's Tax ensures that the Republican Army is well funded. Each family in the Hinterlands is assessed a flat tax of 2 gold crowns annually, which is collected during hte Harvest Festival. For purposes of the tax, a family is defined as any man and his wife or single man over the age of twenty summers who is not currently completing their service in the army. Widows and spinsters are likewise exempt. Any family can request a hardship exception, pleasing their case to a member of the Women's Council at the Festival, though only one who has completed their service has any hope of receiving such an exception. Single men unable to pay the tax are invariably told to sign on to the Army to complete their service as a way to receive an exemption.

While steep, the tax ensures that Republican Army has enough funding to feed, arm, and pay its soldiers. The soldiers, in turn, ensure that the region stays relatively safe from incursions by the Goblin tribes that live in the Grey Peaks and Jasper Mountains. In fact many of the Hinterlands wealthiest ranchers have been known to pay as much as ten times the tax as a way to help keep their lands safe.
