Women's Council

Another in key organization in the Hinterlands is the local Women’s Council. Each village and town has a council, filled with the most influential women in the community. Influence is not determined by wealth or popularity or age. Instead, women attempt to fill their council with far-sighted, community oriented women. Generally, the members of the Women’s Council also have an iron will. Each council has a head, or a Wise Woman. In addition to her duties to her local community, the Wise Women meet once a season with the other Wise Women of the Hinterlands. At both local and Hinterland-wide councils, the women bring matters of conflict to the community into debate. The rulings of a council is not law, but it is final. While town meetings give everyone a chance to discuss community projects, most are finalized and organized at Women’s Council meetings. An old adage – that a wise man is one who is not present when the Women’s Council ends – means that during their meetings, local taverns are the busiest.
