Republican Army
There are several organizations that operate in the Hinterlands, though none is as influence as the Republican Army. Although small in size, the Army influences every Hinterland citizen throughout their life. First, every male born in the Hinterlands is required to spend 2 years in the Republican Army for two years before he marries. If they desire it, women can also server, however few do. For those who are born outside of the Hinterlands, service is still required if the man wishes to take a Hinterland wife. As the ratio of men to woman is unbalanced, with the men heavily outweighing the women, few shirk this requirement. Indeed, many decide that a soldier’s life is the life for them – often making the Army as a career. While these officers do not have the formal training and theoretical education of those that attend the University of Karradone or the War College of Gartcha, they have something that most officers do not – experience as mere soldiers. Combined with a youth hunting and living in the wilderness of the Hinterlands and the availability of War Stags, the Republic Army has some of the best cavalry on Tarien. All in all, the Republican Army stands at almost 250 men to keep the Hinterlands safe from the never ending river of Goblin raids and the sporadic, yet deadly, charges by lion and wolf mounted Kyushu.
