Halobate Salt

Welcome to Solaris, traveller! This is a slower-than-light science fantasy set in our own solar system.
About Solaris | Guide to Solaris | Prologue
Halobate salt is a Mercurian table salt collected by the Halobates, a group of Mercurian nomads. It is a protected product under the regulations of the Inner Planet Trade Association. Normally it takes a product years to gain this status, but special consideration was given to Mercury due to its unique circumstances. Halobate salt, and Mercurian sun salts in general, have become a symbol of Mercury and a way of showing support for the plight of the planet.
In order for a sun salt to be considered Halobate salt, it must be harvested by a member of the Halobate nomads. The salt must be collected in solid form, meaning it is not possible to make Halobate salt from brine, and it has to have been colleccted from areas that were previously oceanic shelves. Only minimal processing is allowed. Additionally, the levels of residual chemicals and heavy metals must be within safe numbers, which generally excludes salt from close to the former shoreline.   The Halobate people have dedicated themselves to the harvest and trade of this salt. Their seasonal routes before the Scorching brought them along the shoreline. The idea of sun salt was conceived when they were trying to adapt to the new more hostile environment of Mercury. Personal off-world friends of members of the Halobate were able to secure the aid of a Venusian company to export and sell the salt on the interplanetary market.
A Venusian graphic design company was behind the iconic packaging. The simple shape of the box and the bold colouration make it easy to pick out Halobate salt on a shelf of other goods, and it has become fashionable on Venus to have sun salt prominently displayed.
