Sunbleached Wastelands

Welcome to Solaris, traveller! This is a slower-than-light science fantasy set in our own solar system.
About Solaris | Guide to Solaris | Prologue
Ever since the Scorching of Mercury destroyed the atmosphere, the planet has been pushed towards two extremes. The sun sears the life out of every square inch it touches, and abandons the scrapes and crevasses it cannot reach. The forgotten reaches become space-cold, and the rest a sunbleached wasteland. Under the vengeful glare of the Chained Sun extreme weather like ion tornados and dust storms ravage the land.   As wildfires burn the forests to ash, as water boils out of the oceans, lakes, and land, and as the sun sears rock and sand, Mercury devolves into homogenous skeletal grey.

Flora and Fauna

The sunbleached wastelands are barren, but not entirely devoid of life. Mummified exoskeletons litter the landscape, but the creatures who could burrow deep or otherwise withstand the extreme cold and heat remain. Like the Nomads of Mercury, the creatures have turned to scavenging too.   The walkers continue to be cornerstones of the ecology even in death. The shade from the gargantuan husks provides shelter from the searing sun, allowing bold critters to dart between the shade.

Extreme Weather

Without the atmosphere for protection, the wastelands experience frequent micro-meteor storms, especially during the twelve days of dawn. The thin coating of dust and regolith can be a blessing, revealing the otherwise invisible tornados that form in a snap as the solar winds hit the planet.   Each Solar Pulse ravages the surface further with magnetic storms, and as the storms sweep through the Iron Spires abberant electric charges power the long-dead cities. All lit up, they shine as ghost cities on the horizon.

Author's Notes

This article was first written for the Pale prompt of Spooktober 2023, which required it to be made as a generic article. I wanted to have it as a location, so it has been remade. I got some lovely comments on the original article, and I want to share them here for posterity.

Poor Mercury. :( I'm glad some life is still able to survive though.

Such a stark and terrible contrast to the vibrant worldbuilding in the other planets you've done! Sort of reminds me of how lucky I am to live in such a beautiful, peaceful place, while other parts of the world are in terrible turmoil. I'd love to learn about some of those last surviving critters hiding in the shade!

The poetic quality of your writing here makes the scene it paints all the more haunting.

Ouch. This really is like a post-apocalyptic world. Every time I read your articles about Mercury's tragic reality it feels like I have to take a moment of silence for everyone who died and everything that's still struggling to survive.

Yeah, things are pretty rough on Mercury. Grubs are doing alright though, go grubs!

I love the rewrite, and the inclusion of sub-biomes! I think I'm most excited to learn more about the Rockwood Fields, to find out what kinda mercurian insects there are :D

Love the rewritten version, with the inclusion of the sub-biomes. Every time I read about Mercury in your world I am filled with some kind of existential horror (I think that's a good thing).

Thank you! Mercury in Solaris certainly isn't the easiest place to read or write about, I feel like it's almost where I pick at some of the pain I feel about our own world. It feels a bit safer to process it in a fictional context, and I hope there's something almost cathargic here for readers too. Maybe not in every article, but at least in a few of them.
