Draconis

"You finally agreed to an interview. Not to push my luck, but may I ask why?" Jill leaned forward, unable to contain the excitement of finally interviewing the quiet musician.

"I thought maybe you'd stop pestering me." Draconis's low, raspy voice held a hint of malice that sent a shiver down her spine.

She leaned away from his intense stare and rigid posture. "Right. So to begin, what inspired your love for music?"

"My mother."

"Care to expand on that? Tell us a little about your mother and how she influenced your music."

"No."

Jill cleared her throat and straightened herself, determined not to be intimidated out of interviewing the most mysterious member of the famous band. "What makes you such a great musician?" she asked, despite being unsure if he was paying attention, as his strange, reddish eyes seemed unfocused and aimed at the wall behind her.

He suddenly leaned forward, his unusual eyes piercing into hers, and hissed, "I listen."

Jill tried to swallow, but her throat had gone dry. Her heart raced, and her palms grew slick. She tried changing course. "Where were you born?"   "How old are you?" she asked when he did not answer the previous question.

"This interview is over." Draconis abruptly stood and left the room.

~ Interview between Draconis and Jill, a reporter for the Salaris Herald

An instrumentalist for the Enchanting Mesmers, Draconis is perhaps the band's most enigmatic and mysterious member. Little is known about this taciturn musician.   The Enchanting Mesmers are famous throughout Imbria for their impressive ability to blend magic and music to create an immersive experience. The band is thought to contain an empath and an illusionist, along with its talented performers, though the band remains tight-lipped on all the talents each member individually possesses.   The band prefers to play in secret bars in unannounced shows, and have turned down numerous opportunities to play in arenas and big events. The only event the band routinely plays is the annual Blood Fest gala in Rhovan's capital.

A Talented Musician

Draconis plays a wide variety of instruments, from stringed to percussion to wind instruments, and with great success.   No one knows where he learned to play or how he has been able to master so many different instruments.   Before joining the Enchanting Mesmers, Draconis could be primarily found playing at galas in Rhovan. These days, he rarely performs solo, excluding practice sessions.

The Man

While Draconis enjoys the perks of his fame, he does not seem to form steady, lasting relationships or friendships with anyone outside of his bandmates. What we know about him is what can be readily observed:
  • He likes the color black
  • He sleeps in late
  • He spends most of his free time alone
  • The Myth

Rumors follow Draconis everywhere he goes, and he makes no effort to confront or correct those rumors.
He's got to be a vampire, or perhaps he's made some deal with a demon? Maybe it's blood magic?

    The Legend

Many believe Draconis to be the best instrumentalist in history.
His fingers fly across the keys faster than anyone else's! And he plays so many different instruments. He's definitely the best musician I've ever heard.

Jill blushed and returned Tom's contagious smile. The lead singer of the Enchanting Mesmers did not sit in the chair so much as he draped himself over it, leaning back as far as he could.   "I was hoping you could fill in some of the missing pieces. Draconis, that isn't his real name, is it?" she asked.

Tom laughed, a melodious, pleasant sound. He shrugged. "I suppose I don't know what his real name is."

    "And that doesn't bother you?"

Tom laughed again. "Draconis can go by anything he wants, so long as he keeps playing the way he does. Dude can play any instrument we throw at him."

"He's so... intense. Do you ever feel this detracts from the band's success?"

"Draconis is intense. Absolutely. He's edgy and moody. Sure. But then, some people like that, yeah?"   Tom tilted his head and held up a finger, pausing her next question. "Before you ask, yes, I believe he would prefer darker music than our usual fare, but he really doesn't complain much, and he brings such depth to our ballads. He really is a vital part of our band.

"And what magic does he bring to the group, if any?" she asked.

Tom clucked his tongue at her and shook his head. "You know I won't answer those types of questions."

~ Interview between Tom, lead singer of Enchating Mesmers, and Jill, reporter for the Salaris Herald

The crowd cheered, and Draconis could almost taste the excitement, the anticipation, the lust. Their applause thundered in his ears. Far too loud. Always too loud. That was the worst part of his evenings.   He took a deep breath, wishing he could desensitize to the volume. He willed the pain to recede into the back of his mind and followed the band out into the main room of the Hideout and onto the stage, where an assortment of instruments awaited.   He pulled a wooden flute from the inside of his jacket, and put it to his lips. Strangely, it was his favorite instrument these days. His fingers flew along the finger holes, his music weaving a complicated tale to complement Tom's lyrics and the subtle influences of the band's combined magics.   Still, it wasn't enough to distract him.   Leena, a regular at the Hideout, walked in and plopped into an empty chair near the bar. The tension almost instantly melted from her as the group's magic worked its way into her. Leena. Poor, desperate, willing Leena.   Perhaps he would visit her later tonight. He was also desperate.

Ooooo. The alternating boxes for dialogue in this interview is great, I love it. I love how blunt Draconis is with his answers, too xD It's already a great introduction to the kind of character he is.   "He likes the colour black, he sleeps in late, he spends most of his free time alone" Mood :P   I do really love the formatting of the article, too! It keeps it fresh and easy to read through everything. Especially the way the last interview leads us into that ending section of prose. Well done on that, and the entire article!

The interviews were really fun XD I like the mystery about Draconis and seeing how people perceive him. Since you said you wanted to add something but don't know what, I'd suggest another section from someone's else POV. Like maybe a fan writing for a gossip newspaper and sharing about an encounter with him, to show the origin of some rumours? I like the different format and POV you've used already, so building up on that could be nice. Oh, or maybe showing the final article that Jill is going to publish in the newspaper about the interviews with the band? Is she going to go Rita Skeeter-style about it to try to make up for the lack of answers? Try to make up some new rumour about Draconis?

I like the idea of someone sharing an encounter. I'll have to think on that. Maybe a newspaper clippings section   LMAO:

I love the dialog! And damn, he sounds bit rude, I hope the music is really enough to deal with him XD Liked the article, the breaks, the dialog, and all made it an easy read, which I really needed after all these long bards

Those alternating dialogue pieces are very neatly done, love it! The conversations themselves were quite fun as well and did give us an insight in how Draconis is like :p Given the mystery and the information that we do have I would think he is a vampire as well xp

The interview format is such a nice touch. The way its presented, the artwork, the clues all screaming vampire. BUT he sleeps in late, not all day, which I think is an important distinction. Having not dug too much into your world (besides the also well done magic addiction article) I would lean more towards a Fae that is using the vampire mystique to throw people off. :)   The fact that readers are speculating speaks very highly of the article. Great job.

I love the interviews throughout the article and that they come together in a newspaper clipping at the end. Love how the reporter took quotes out of context, just like in real life!   I'm very intrigued by Draconis. The little piece of prose really added to his character too - it was nice to get in his head a little.

Those are some juicy interviews, though I imagine Jill was less than happy with how they turned out. The way she spun it is brilliant though. I loved the presentation in this one, the back and forth between Jill and Draconis/Tom conveyed their characters, their attitudes and the mystery perfectly. I especially agree with the choice of having him characterized (mostly) by showing how others react to him. As I read through it, I had a little trouble grasping who Leena is and why she would be sitting in a chair - I suppose she is part of the audience in the scene? Though at first I thought she was a member of the band. You did a great job with him. Can I just add that Tom is suspicious as hell? He really is :D

Thank you so much :) And thank you for your feedback. I tried to clarify a little with only doing minor edits. Leena is a regular at the bar and audience member. I had a story about her in another article about magic addiction, so I wanted to interweave them a bit.   I'll have to make an article about Tom at some point :)

A mysterious bard. No wonder some of them think he's a vampire, it would also explain why he's mastered so many instruments: he's had enough time to learn them.   What I really liked here was what the reporter did with the interviews. Well, actually she only really edited one. Sadly, there really is something to this way of working in the yellow press at times. Also, the mini-story was well embedded and made me feel a bit more alive. Thank you.

Telling a story doesn't mean it has to be a brand new one. The Oldies are sometimes the best, especially when told with a different voice, and a new interpretation. Just a quick pointer... consistency is king. Are they the Enchanted Mesmers, or the Enchanting Mesmers? In the former case, they are driven by external forces, and in the second they are the ones that cause the magicks they are subject to. You inexactly used both terms, in different places in the Story. If that was intentional, fine, but if you are working a Mystery or Mythic angle, you probably want to ensure your consistency. Bravo, nonetheless. Although the name Draconis is closely associable, it isn't by any means a deterrent to the power of the Story. Keep it up!

Good catch on the inconsistent band name :) Fixed. They are enchanting, and at any rate, perhaps one day I'll pick a better (less lazy) band name. As for the name Draconis, I was thinking the constellation and something obviously a bit over the top. Nothing's set in stone at this point, so I'll think on it.   Thank you so much for the read and the comment!

Yeah, I think that is why so many others who were similarly enticed to parallel, even for a bit, used the Count's rank, as well as his name, to soften the obvious naming issues... A count vs. a baron, or a van versus a von. Drakul or Draconis. A time-honored tale such as this can be veiled thin or deeply, depending on how far the similarities run. As I said, your approach is fresh and exciting. Keep up the good work!
