Suon Species in THF Universe | World Anvil

Suon

Founding race of the Hyperion Federation and United nations of Tebburus. Their homeworld is on Tebburus.   Suons are semi immortal meaning their lifespan is near infinite (they don't die from old age) but can still die from other causes. They are also good at physics naturally. However these powerful traits come with many costs such as inefficient metabolism (they must eat lots) to compensate for entropy. The average suon is slightly taller than an average human. Suon biology is quite strange.   They also have a number of bioluminescent areas on their skin, and their blood is also bioluminescent. This serves no actual use, but exist because their bodies were engineered like that. Depending on ethnicity, the colour of their skin and bioluminescence can range between any colour.

Favored Professions

War-Engineers, scientists, starship crews. As War-Engineers form a decent part of suon culture despite being extremely few and far between, most War-Engineers are suons. War-Engineers of other races exist as well however.   As suons are a highly curious people, and scientists are meant to obtain information on various areas, many suons desire to be scientists. This leads to a massive competition for the few spots that can be scientists. Suon scientists are always exceptionally skilled as a result. They go through a lot of Virtual Universe training.   Because they value technology so largely, and they cannot forget just how far they have come, their starships are always exceptionally well staffed as many want to become a starship crew. Another key reason is that this brings them closer to the stars - as their culture involves 'binding their soul to stars', they feel very close and connected to them. As all the other favored positions have a low demand, their starship crews also have high competition. They too undergo a lot of Virtual Universe training. Many civilians of the Federation also live on stations or starships (the prime example being the Hyperion - Class Worldship Carrier).

Basic Information

Anatomy

As suons rely on manipulation, their arms are noticeably longer than most species. Also, their elbow joint is a ball socket joint, allowing the lower arm to rotate in all directions regardless of forearm orientation. Their feet are also noticeably larger. This provides them with more surface area in contact with the ground and thus friction while walking.

Genetics and Reproduction

Suons are asexual, meaning there are no genders. A single suon can reproduce entirely on their own. In their default state, there is a large empty space within them internally, but after they reached a certain age they can undergo a self-induced mutation that grows a new organ in this space, the equivalent of the womb, and can just start building a baby when they want. However, this process takes a long time.

Growth Rate & Stages

Suons grow slowly. After their initial birth, it takes about 5 Earth - years to achieve sapience. During this age, they are incredibly weak and should probably be fed softer foods. After 30 years, they grow to their full size. From this age, they can build their womb and reproduce. After 50 years, they stop aging physically. They also stop aging mentally. They can learn new things, but assuming they dont (impossible), one will likely behave the same after 3000 years.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Due to the unique biology and chemical makeup of Tebburus lifeforms, other food sources are processed with much lower efficiency. They need food from an ecosystem similar to Tebburus. But even then, it is still inefficient.

Behaviour

Suon psychology works differently from humans. Suons were engineered, and so were their brains. Unlike humans, suons usually desire non material goods. Both humans and suons will desire happiness, but humans will often go about it using material goods. Suons usually go about it in other ways. Due to this, it is not unheard of for a suon to want safety not just for themselves, but for the wider Federation. This can make them appear selfless, but is actually partly a selfish trait too. As such, they never managed to develop a money based ecnomy that worked.   They will also usually actively try to save lives at risk. Their brains were designed to do that. Suons do not kill for revenge or other petty reasons. They can still desire and take revenge however.   Suons are also naturally curious. They try to find out more about everything. They also tend to think more logically and are more honest than humans tend to be.   Outside of civilization, e.g. pre-Unification War or getting lost on Tebburus, they will tend to band together as surviving individually is more difficult. They behave very aggressively to predators (some lifeforms on Tebburus can be much larger than suons), but never engage if not sufficiently equipped as suons have always relied on ingenuity for survival. Due to evolutionary processes, they are often accurate even in times of extreme emotion. They will ignore any food as long as they have enough already.

Additional Information

Average Intelligence

They are skilled in physical sciences (Physics) and have a very good ingenuity that they always have relied on for survival.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Suons only get first names. Examples include Karlos, Karzen, Tarlox, Antoin, Kyeler, Rogr, Wallon, Aybram, Traze, Yael, Tyze, Traze, Armanis, Nero.

Beauty Ideals

Bioluminescent patches can cover many locations of their body, not just their face, such as the legs and torso. Generally, one can be considered beutiful if these are clean. They are only visible when not covered by clothing, so sometimes they are made to be seethrough at these areas.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Most suons prefer their native language of the continent they live on, but most can speak in suon common which is a species-wide unified language.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

During their very early history, when they looked up at the night sky and saw many stars, they initially thought they were the spirits of their ancestors. As a result these stars became a large part of suon culture, and they soon named many of them. At birth, they are ‘assigned’ a star by their parent, to ‘connect their soul to it’. Destruction of stars, including natural supernovae, might cause distress. Even as science advanced, and they realized what a star actually is, this culture still remained. They became fascinated about the universe, and highly curious people. They feel attached to the stars. This tradition is known as Star Attunements.   Their bioluminescence also has a significant impact on their culture, especially now that they are spacefaring and know that they are one of the extremely few races with bioluminescence. Due to the phenomenon where they get brighter under heavy emotion, it is almost impossible to hide such emotions. Some people can be trained to tell what a suon is feeling even in normal luminescence. When they know they cant hide something due to the luminescence, they are honest.

Common Taboos

A significant social taboo is insulting others' technology. They do make a distinction between insults and constructive feedback, however. They also see unnessessary loss of life as dishonorable. Killing more than necessary to win a war goes against the psychology of the suon species.

History

They were bio-engineered on Tebburus. Once life grew on the planet, covering the entirety of the surface, the suon species was seeded all over the world, including most floating islands that were large enough and the caves underground. They fought an extremely deadly Unification War that lasted from the stone age all the way past what most species would call the space age. During this war, the Saelian Coalition interfered in an attempt to destroy or enslave the entire species. The assaults failed. After they unified and finished their war, forming the United nations of Tebburus, they needed to defeat the Saelians in order to keep life. However, Tebburus is a huge world. capable of producing immense amounts of resources due to its huge size. The industrial capabilities would be similarly immense due to the huge living area, and due to the fact the world can support about 700 trillion souls. The Suons were finishing off finalizing their new age of technology, the Δ - version of High-Energy Technology. The ultimate precursor to everything commonly used today. The Saelians who still own the space around Tebburus were still a threat at this point, but after the destruction of that planet cracker, no invasion attempts have been seen since. The suons learned that the Saelians had a highly corrupt Corporatocracy type government, owned by massive corporations. Where the working class is expected to work long hours jut to meet their needs, whereas the upper class could live extremely luxurious and easy lives. Of course, they had many rebellions to deal with as a result. If the suons could utilize this to overthrow the Saelian government, perhaps they could form an alliance with the Saelians? While at the same time destroying a tyrant?   Using this method, they eventually conquered the Saelian Coalition. But they didn't kill all the Saelians, only forming an alliance with them. The alliance would become known as the Hyperion Federation and grow to incorporate more and more alien civilizations.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

They view non sentient lifeforms as largely beneath them, including lifeforms significantly larger than themselves. The only thing that really threatened their species during the Unification War was themselves.  As suons smile down upon advanced technology and marvels of engineering, they are far more likely to recognize sentient species on a good level.
Suons are not carbon or silicon based lifeforms. Insted, they rely on exotic matter based around magnetic monopoles. These monopoles can capture some atoms. These would then bond to other monopole systems.
Lifespan
Semi-Immortal
Average Height
Average ~2 m
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Their skin colour can vary depending on ancestory. There are those with blue skin, orange, purple, green, white. Some parts of their skin may exhibit bioluminescent properties. These too can vary depending on ancestory. The bioluminescence becomes noticeably more intense under heavy emotion.
Geographic Distribution
Suon children are treated well and kept away from danger. This is important because their species reproduces slowly, making each child more important. They are however, trained to use weapons from a young age despite the strict gun laws of the Federation. This is so they can fight effectively for themselves in case they are conquered by an enemy faction. They are raised by their one parent (suons are asexual). This makes them more difficult to look after, so often, entire communities cooperatively look after all children.   Because suons stop aging eventually, they will not die from old age. As such, elders can become extremely experienced, some being 45 000 years old. Elders are well respected for their experience. Strangely, compared to elders of other species, suon elders appear to behave more childlike. This is because they also stop aging mentally.   As suons need a high body temperature to survive, they often sleep together in order to share body heat. They might also use some of their bioluminescence to heat eac other up. This is particularly common among Water Suons when sleeping in water, which is highly conductive to heat. Though water suons are likely to sleep in heated rooms.

Physiology

Suons are actually an extremely complex amoeba. Most of their bodies are comprised of a single, massive, extremely complex cell. There is an exception with their blood, as that is made up of many cells. Their nervous systems are not reliant on electrons but photons, so its much harder to electrocute them because they can let go of live cables unlike humans, who have electron based nervous systems. This also allows their bodies to utilise a wider spectrum of signals rather than just on or off.   Additionally they don't have strands of DNA, that data is stored in a spacetime crystal (an exotic state of matter which will not decay over time) within their brain, which explains their semi immortality.   Their stomachs are reliant on plasma rather than acid and, notably, it also serves the role of the intestines, absorbing the nutrients and injecting it into the blood, which is bioluminescent. this makes it quite inefficient as it expends energy to process all matter rather than just sending it out as waste. Which in a suon is sent out alongside the urine (nothing can use every bit of material). This also means that the food takes a longer time to digest, so they need a bigger stomach. This inefficiency results in a high body temperature which makes them easier to find via thermal imaging. Their body temperaure typically stays close to 49 degrees celsius. (Humans are about 37)   Their hearts are also not similar to human ones. Suon blood contains kaidatons, and their heart, taidakons. Their cardiovascular system utilizes taidakic fields. Kaidatons and taidakons are sometimes, if rarely, lost from the body. Suons require an atmosphere with a very low taidakon / kaidaton radiation content. They can live without taidakon / kaidaton intake for about 10 Earth years.   Although suons have wombs, they are not like any mammalian species. Most of a fetus' body is grown in a seperate section of the womb; almost acting like a secondary organ. After a certain point, the baby is released from this and enters the womb to grow. Instead of relying on an umbilical cord, the womb excretes mass which the fetus will absorb into its body.    Their immune systems are also strange and inefficient. They contain the pathogen within a small capsule of minerals and send it out along with the waste. If the capsule breaks after they keep it in for too long, the pathogen can re infect the body and turn the lower abdomen area into a breeding ground.
