Oxus

Oxus is a quiet town with a notably wealthy population, consisting largely of merchants who have retired from trade with large fortunes at their disposal. The tomb of Kynaios and Tiro also stands in the center of the town, the subject of many local legends. The town is overseen by a Triumvirate because the three most wealthy citizens couldn't choose a single leader so they work together. The city has a reputation of being a bit pompous and restrictive for those who don't fit their idea of a "well to do" person.

Demographics

various species and origins of humans, though predominantly from wealthy backgrounds

Government

The town is overseen by a Triumvirat of retired wealthy nobles from Meletis that ensure the town is doing well and act as liaisons with the Twelve of Meletis. Having primarily come to the town from Meletis, the citizens of Oxus generally view themselves as a "suburb" of the polis and follow their laws, requiring their services for protection, judiciary needs, and the majority of their trade. The citizens here also retain their claim as citizens of Meletis since the majority of them were born there as this settlement almost acts as a retirement area with very few younger people and no children.

Defences

The Reverent Army of Meletis sends troops out to the town to help defend it from the water and land.

Industry & Trade

There are market stalls for trading and their fish and coastal resources are traded with Meletis, which helps them to maintain an affluent town by providing them in turn with stone, building materials, scrolls, and scholarly information, and spices and fabrics.

Infrastructure

The town is small but Meletis has helped it to become as comfortable as possible and supplied them with white stone for buildings and roads, helped them to build aqueducts and watermills with sewers, courtyards, a market place with stalls, and a shipyard for those taking the long way around the peninsula to get into Meletis.

Assets

docks and fishing grounds, wealthy landowners who have relocated to the town with their valuables and trading supplies.

History

MYTH OF THE FIRST KINGS OF MELETIS

In ages past, the peoples of what would one day become Meletis were ruled by the archon tyrant Agnomakhos. Unchecked for generations, the vicious overlord carved out a mighty empire. Willing to endure the immortal’s cruelty no longer, the heroes Kynaios and Tiro—united by their love of freedom and one another—rose to challenge him.   So, when the heroes Kynaios and Tiro sought to inspire an uprising, few flocked to their banner.   Undeterred, the rebels soldiered on against impossible odds. Seeing their dedication to the cause of freedom, the goddess Ephara came to the heroes. She offered to aid Kynaios and Tiro in their battle against the tyrant, supplementing their martial skill with a new weapon: magic.   With their new power, Kynaios and Tiro inspired the people to rise up against Agnomakhos, ultimately defeating his armies and striking the archon down. From their victory rose the polis of Meletis and the use of magic among mortals.   The people rallied to their cause, and through the strength of arms, magic, and devotion, they defeated Agnomakhos. The polis of Meletis rose from the ruins of the archon’s empire, established as a beacon of freedom and enlightenment, and its people chose Kynaios and Tiro to be its first kings.   Agnomakhos’s fall remains a point of honor in the minds of Meletis’s people, a moment immortalized in relief upon countless civic buildings throughout the polis.   The joint tomb of these Kings is in Oxus.

Tourism

Not many come to visit the area, except to pay homage to the tomb of the First Kings. Though many relocate to the town in their older years to get away from the polis and achieve a slower pace. Sort of like a retirement community.

Architecture

nearly identical to Meletis and done so very on purpose.

Geography

Oxus is right on the water with a large dock and the land side faces the polis of Meletis. The coastal area makes for lush greenery and a few rolling hills.

Natural Resources

Coastal resources like stone, fish, and fine minerals and the like. Wild game and vegetation.
