Pyrgnos Tower

Many Meletians speak of the “edifice of knowledge,” referring in the abstract to the sum of all learning and scholarship. Every citizen is expected to help to improve this edifice for the good of the polis, whether through philosophical exploration, advancements in magical technique, investigation into the nature of the gods, or perfection of techniques in crafting and trade.   But the edifice of knowledge in Meletis is a literal structure as well as a metaphorical one: the Pyrgnos is a glowing stone tower standing near the coast. It is literally formed from the collected learnings of the polis, recorded on carved stone tablets and glowing letters hovering in the air. At night, the Pyrgnos shines like a lighthouse where the sea wall meets the shore, gleaming on the waters of the Siren Sea.   A decade ago, the Pyrgnos was partly demolished by a kraken that attacked the city, but it has been repaired and continues to grow, reflecting the continued learning of the polis’s citizens.

Purpose / Function

The tower exists to both preserve knowledge in the glowing carvings etched into each of the stones of the building and act as a lighthouse for those near the coast of Meletis in the Siren Sea.

Alterations

The building is constantly growing, usually through the use of magic, to accommodate more learned information. It was also once smashed by a kraken and has since been updated and repairs.

Architecture

The stone used to build the tower is lightly colored and was mainly sourced from the beaches and shores of Meletis. It is a beacon of the importance that Meletians place on knowledge and bettering oneself. Throughout the structure, there are icons and symbols of Ephara. It's decorated with mosaics depicting Ephara, urns with starry Nyx pouring from them, water features exist throughout with fountains, and seeing bowls inside. It sort of acts as a Temple to Ephara as well. The walls are painted white and the accents blue to represent her colors.

History

The kraken attack nearly devastated the Tower, but thankfully the polis came together, using all their skills and spells, to restore the structure. It has always had a caretaker chosen from the faithful of Ephara from a pool of people that volunteer for the position. Currently, the position is being held by Ekaterini Speridi- a crotchety old woman who has long served as the Tower's keeper and is the person who attends to any who choose to visit, which doesn't happen too often.

Tourism

People can choose to visit the Tower to look at the amassed knowledge and wonder, and even some visit to learn about Ephara and the lighthouse aspect, but it isn't bustling by any means. Mostly, it just stands as a beautiful sight and reminder of the polis's commitment to knowledge.
