Ynys (ˈənɨ̞s)

Ynys is one of the largest islands in the Great Ring, and the largest island in the Northeastern Region. The Ynys Archipelago also bears its name. It is home to many smaller kingdoms, although there is a prophecy that this may not be the case for much longer.   Ynys has a diverse terrain, with everything from rugged coastlines and sprawling forests to high mountains and rolling plains. The climate varies depending on its location, with the northern regions experiencing harsh winters while the southern areas enjoy milder temperatures. The island is also home to several large rivers, including the River Severin, which flows from the north to the south dividing the island in half.   Ynys is a melting pot of different cultures and languages. The island was heavily influenced by the Clarati who left their mark on Ynys during a thousand-year period where they ruled the island. Although the Clarati are no longer present, the effects of their tenure are still present throughout Ynys. The island is also home to many immigrants from the Norður Islands, many of whom came as mercenaries during the Age of Warlocks.      Ynys has been home to several different civilizations throughout the ages. However, it is the rise and fall of the Clarati that has had the most profound impact on Ynys' history. For a millenia, the Clarati ruled over Ynys, using their powerful magic to maintain their grip on the island's inhabitants. This all changed when a great catastrophe struck Sange, the Clarati's homeland, and the Empress of the Clarati disappeared. This triggered a war between the Clarati on Ynys and sparked the Age of Warlocks, a three-century-long period of bloody conflict and upheaval. To this day, the reason for the Clarati's attacks on each other is still a mystery to most, as are so many things about those alien and enigmatic sorcerers.   When the Clarati began to attack each other, the inhabitants of the island saw their opportunity to rid themselves of the sorcerers. Even in those places where their reign had been benevolent, the onset of full-scale magical war quickly turned the populace against any and all magic. The rebels used every means at their disposal, including hiring mercenaries from the Norður Islands.    The overthrow of the Clarati left a power vaccuum that has repurcussions to this day, some six hundred years later. Today, Ynys is divided into several small kingdoms that are constantly vying for power and influence. These kingdoms range in size and strength, with some being little more than petty fiefdoms, while others are powerful and prosperous nations. There are those who speak of unifying the island under a single government, but little progress has been made towards this end so far.

Notable Spirits

The spirits of Ynys are known collectively as the Ellyll. There are hundreds of them across the island, a part of the landscape and geography of the island. Ynys is also the home to a number of gods that were created by the Godcrafter's Guild during the rule of the Clarati. The most prominent of these new gods is the Aurelian Bridge, who is said to provide the means to buy and sell anything, even aspects of reality itself.

Geography

The island of Ynys is a rugged and diverse landmass, dominated by rocky coastlines and rolling hills. The eastern coast of the island is characterized by rocky cliffs and fjords, while the western coast is more gentle, with sandy beaches and marshy estuaries. The interior of the island is a mix of fertile valleys and rugged uplands, dotted with small lakes and forests. There are many small islands along the shores of Ynys, as well as the other large islands in the Ynys Archipelago.

Ecosystem

The ecosystem of Ynys is rich and varied, with a mix of both terrestrial and aquatic habitats. The island's coastal waters are teeming with fish and other marine life, including dolphins, whales, and seals. The many forests and woodlands are home to a variety of animals, such as deer, songbirds, and bears. Dozens of tree species can be found there, including oak, beech, pine, and spruce. The island's freshwater ecosystems, such as its rivers and lakes, support a diverse range of aquatic species, including fish, amphibians, and insects.

Climate

Ynys is located in a temperate region, but with a climate heavily influenced by cold currents from the Northern Region of the Great Ring. These currents bring harsh winters and cool summers to the island. The island is also subject to frequent storms and heavy rainfall, especially in the autumn and winter months. The western side of the island is generally drier and cooler than the eastern side.

Natural Resources

Ynys is rich in natural resources, including timber, minerals, and fish. The island's forests provide a source of wood for construction and fuel, while its rivers and streams provide a source of fresh water. The island's mineral resources include iron, copper, and tin, which have been mined for centuries. The island's coastal waters are also a rich source of fish, which provide a source of food and income for the island's inhabitants.   The island is also rich in the esoteric metals of adamant, mithral, and orichalcum, along with small deposits of aetherrum. These are primarily located in the mines known as the Fodinae Profundae in the kingdom of Creoda.
