Hólmur Fen (ˈhœlmʊɹ fɛn)
Hólmur Fen is the lowest point of the Fenlands in southern Gewisse, and also the lowest point on the entire island of Ynys. It is over six hundred acres of wetlands and marsh, and a part of a systems of wetlands and marshes that cover much of southern Gewisse. Travel through the are is difficult, and most choose either the coastal road along the Bay of Bees, or travel up the River Severin - both of these routes avoid passage directly through the Fenlands. Hólmur Fen and the Fenlands are known to harbor groups of people afflicted by the Eofordræht, adding to the danger of travelling through the region.
Notable Spirits
The area is known for a number of dangerous spirits, including lantern men and the standing toads. But the most significant of these is the god Shug, who rules over all the lesser spirits of the Fenlands. Shug appears as a shaggy black creature standing on all fours, with the body of a dog and the face of an ape. His eyes are a burning red, and can leave his head to travel freely throughout the fenlands, floating along and allowing Shug to observe whatever may pass. Locals say that if you lie down with your face in the mud, Shug cannot see you, and will pass you by. Those who fail to avoid Shug's attention will be hunted by the god, who will appear out of the darkness suddenly and pin the invader. Those captured by Shug must swear to serve the beast for a year and a day, or be devoured - service to Shug can take many forms, but most often involves acquiring vast amounts of fresh meat for the god to consume. Shug grants his servants certain powers over darkness and fear to aid them in this, and those who are bound to the god are unwelcome in any of the communities near the fen.
